Steaming Da Dress

August 13th, 2008 @ 3:04 pm by Mrs. Green Tea

I bought the fabric steamer recommended by Mrs. Canary to take out the wrinkles on my dress. I purchased it from Amazon.com, and for whatever reason, the item came without that important instructions pamphlet that was rated as a must read!

Yesterday the MOH came over to help me ‘wing it’, and here are the results!

Steamed dress!

I had lots of questions before I decided to go the steaming route over the $75 alternative to get it professionally pressed. I was worried that it would ruin the dress somehow. Since I’m not too attached to my dress, I took the risk, and I think it paid off! I saved a few bucks, and I have a steamer to use for steaming the veil and any last minute touch-ups on the day of.

Special shout out to the MOH—I really couldn’t have done this one without her, especially the product showcase pictures part.

Are you steaming your dress or having it professionally pressed?

I’ve been told by my planners (who also run a dress shop) that a warm iron is the way to go with raw silk. It sounds like a lot of effort, but I guess I will trust them with that– I have to do SOMETHING after transporting the dress to Montana in the car. Heh.

It looks great! I actually had mine professionally pressed because the bridal shop offered to do it for free!

I wish I steamed mine! Steaming is expensive! Unfortunately, I registered for a pressurized steamer/iron, and got it a little too late!

These results are fantastic! I was in a wedding a few years back and three of the bridesmaids hadn’t had their dresses pressed or anything (or bothered to even look at their dresses prior to the date). Naturally, the day of the wedding they realized that they were horribly wrinkled. We made a few calls and someone had a hand steamer and in 20 minutes all of the dresses looked perfect. It was a lifesaver!!!

May I ask how it handled the beading on your dress? I’m about to purchase the steamer but I am concerned that it may not be heavy duty enough to handle wrinkles around the beading of my dress.

I have been a fan of steamers ever since I worked in retail. We already received a new iron with a steaming function that I LOVE, but now I want this one, too. Hmmmm….I wonder how I can slip this one by Mr. Y without being questioned…

My mommy lovingly ironed mine with my help.

I own this steamer (Conair) and used it on my dress. I loved it. I didn’t use it on the beaded bodice, just the skirt. But my dress was all durable, synthetic fabrics; I’d be cautious about using it on silk.

I got my dress back from being professionally pressed today… it cost me 15 bucks! I was originally considering buying that steamer, but no longer. :)

@rowanej: because the beading on my dress is really dense and mostly on areas where it’s more stiff, there were not or i did not notice many wrinkles so i didn’t really steam where the beads were. There is a vertical beaded edge to the skirt, and I steamed over that with no problem, though it’s such a thin area I’m not sure we can base judgement on that. sorry i’m not much help, good luck!

hey! Awesome results!! I am thinking of steaming my dress too, but I’m wondering how long it takes? How much time did you spend on doing that? and how far in advance did you do it? Thanks,
Miss- soon to be Mrs. Mojito

@missmojito: i didn’t pay real good attention to the time spent and we were goofing around quite a bit, but i’m guessing it took an hour or so. i suggest giving yourself time to practice on some other garment though! as far as how far in advance, i would think a week or two ahead is within reason so that’s what i did. i’ll have the steamer on the day of if touch ups are necessary :)

You convinced me. My wedding venue has a steamer in the bridal chambers. I will not be talked into getting my dress pressed…I hope:)
