The Dates are Saved, Man*

August 13th, 2008 @ 12:50 pm by Miss Sweet Tea

Without further ado, the design for our Save the Date postcards:

(front)

(back)
The wording is changed for privacy reasons, but our heads really were cut off for the STD design! We used a photo from our engagement session that I will blog about very soon!

For the STD, we kept the design super-simple, and only added information about one of the four hotel blocks we booked on the back. Our guests are all pretty internet-savvy, so we assumed they would be able to find the information they needed from the website.

Since we printed on both sides, we mailed the postcards out in Astrobright envelopes we ordered online at EnvelopeMall (in the “Re-Entry Red” color). I loved EnvelopeMall- really great prices, fast and cheap shipping, so I highly recommend them!

Knowing how dodgy our handwriting is, I made clear labels for the addresses and our return labels, using the same fonts from the STD design- Honey Script for the names, and Mary Jane for the addresses. It came out pretty well, and I don’t think it looked tacky at all. (I probably should have done labels for our invitations… but that’s for another post!)

This little DIY project was all pretty painless except for one thing I didn’t count on: it seems there was a misunderstanding among some family members about exactly what this mailing was. I realized after the fact that we didn’t put the actual words “Save the Date” on our cards, but I hoped that the wording “invitation to follow” would make it obvious this wasn’t the real invite to the wedding. Still, I got a facebook(!) message from one of my aunts pointing out my “failure to include the important information” on the cards, ie where the ceremony and reception are. Even though it’s listed on the website… and there are invites going out… I guess I will just have to accept this as a generational thing. Did any of you encounter this confusion among older guests?

What do you think about our Save the Dates? Not bad for our first DIY effort, right? It was very cost-effective going through VistaPrint and EnvelopeMall, so I think the most we spent was on the postage! I know our STDs aren’t as snazzy as some others, but they did the job for the most part, so I can’t complain :)

* Title of this post to be said in the voice of Kenny Crandall from the seminal flick Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead

Lol, I love your reference to “don’t tell mom…” - that was one of my favorite movies growing up. I think I still have the VHS somewhere.

I think these are lovely, and don’t look DIY at all. Gives me hope that I might be able to pull off a DIY project of my own!

so cute! its funny how people just gloss over things like this when they assume its one thing and then get all frumpy about it because it’s “missing information.” uh…didn’t you read it? lol. happens in my family all the time!

I was thinking of putting the definition of “save the date” on the back of mine. In a cheeky kind of way but specifically to avoid confused elders.

Yeah, my grandma was confused when she received her magnet as well, and asked my aunt if it was an invitation and why there wasn’t more info

I can only speak for myself but I have been known to send a quick e-mail asking for more information only to find out that I could have figured it out myself with a couple clicks of the mouse. I think it’s a common affliction.

Your cards are great, questions are unavoidable.

I love the design! Clever, tongue in cheek stuff…yet a tad innocent…LOVE the movie reference!

I had even younger people think that my STD’s were the actual invite. They were astounded at the fact that I spent so much time putting together my invites later on because, “Didn’t I already get an invite?” They had the “Save the Date” printed right on them. And as with most STD’s they didn’t have any “important” info on them :) Go figure. I think people outside the wedding world just don’t know, or care about all the minute details that we do :)

I love your thread title, and I guessed the reference even BEFORE reading the footnote! I say/think “the dishes are done, man” all the time after doing the dishes! Awesome!

Haha! I read the title and then scrolled down to follow the asterisk before reading the rest of your post. I love that movie! There began my girl crush on Christina Applegate.
I love the design and the color on your Save The Dates. Nice work!

Very awsome Save the Dates!!! The picture has tons of personality, even without your heads!

The Blissful Bride says:

These are adorable! I’d definitely say that it was a generational gap issue — a lot of older folks don’t seem to understand what save the dates even are. So, no worries! Anyway, I love the photo and you really did an awesome awesome job, ESPECIALLY for your first DIY project (it’s much better than most people ever do!)!
