About Mrs. Sea Breeze

A Virgin No More!

August 14th, 2008 @ 4:58 pm by Mrs. Sea Breeze

Ok, so the title was a bit of a tease. This is not about that. Promise. ;-)

Throughout this engagement, I’ve found out that it’s never too late to try something for the first time. After all, as they say, there’s a first time for everything!

Usually this applies to the normal wedding stuff: the first time printing your own invites, the first time putting on a wedding dress, maybe even the first time stalking wedding websites in search of inspiration! (I know I’m guilty.)

But there are a lot of OTHER first-times too, many of them beauty-related. There’s the facials, the eyebrow tinting and the teeth whitening. Then there’s the kind you don’t really talk about. Like waxing.

Ladies and gentlemen, today was my first time…

… getting a bikini wax.

I KNOW, I KNOW! How on Earth did it take me thirty years to get on this train?

Well, I blame it on my Calgary upbringing and subsequent stints in France, Finland and Montreal, all locations which are not exactly conducive to swimsuit-wearing.

As such, I felt quite satisfied with my suds n’ razor routine.

But now that the prospect of wearing a bikini every single day for two weeks is looming ahead of me (one week for the destination wedding in Punta Cana, and one week for the honeymoon), I decided that this was the time to take the plunge.

After work today, I decided to pop into the spa down the street from my house to finally inquire about getting a bikini wax. Truth be told, (and this might be wayyy too much information but oh well), I had been thinking about it for the past week or so and, as such, had forgone the razor routine… and it was driving me freakin’ CRAZY. So I was hoping I’d be able to make an appointment toute de suite.

I didn’t think toute de suite meant RIGHT THERE AND THEN, though.

So I did it!

And I survived!

Not only was the esthetician super friendly and patient with all my questions, not for a moment did she make me feel silly that I had never done it before. Overall, it was a pretty great experience.

Well, except for the whole ripping-the-hair-out-in-one-rapid-SWISSSHHHH part.

O-U-C-H.

The fact that I didn’t have a lot of time to fret and stress and get nervous about the looming date of my bikini wax did make it a whole lot easier to handle, I must say. Either that, or it’s like the post-baby amnesia I’ve heard about - once it’s over, you just sort of conveniently forget the painful parts.

Anyone else have any first-time beauty-routine adventures leading up to their weddings?

I got a first brazilian wax a month ago and I’m definitely loving it! Though, it was quite painful!

I busted a gut when I read this! I’ve been contemplating, especially with a honeymoon to Mexico and I’ll be busting out the bikini. I am a bikini wax virgin. I know how painful eyebrows are…I..can’t…even…imagine…I might contemplate it so more…

Miss Seabreeze, where did you go? I’ve heard that Linda’s in Kits is one of the best in the city, but I have yet to take the plunge for the first time myself as well!

I am lucky that my natural growth is… narrow? so visible bikini area hair will never be a problem for me. I’m a trimmer.

Ahhh… Brazilian waxing is THE BEST. Way better than razors…and way better (read: softer, prettier, etc) than just the bikini area. ;-) Welcome! :)

I remember the 1st time I got a brazilian done (maybe 1 year now), I had taken 3 advils 30 minutes before and then a couple of glasses of red wine right after. Anything to not feel the pain. It hurt. I won’t lie. But, gradually I’ve foregone the liquor. I still do the advils. And my awesome waxer still laughs at me as she attempts to have deep conversations with me about everything from my “girl” to her boyfriends to my H2B, etc…all in 15 minutes! lol

I wrote a post about sugaring just a little while ago. It’s super! Can be less painful than waxing, too!

Here’s some link love: http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/07/25/the-sweeter-side-ofhair-removal/

@Miss Cookie: The thought that legions of women before me have done it and lived to tell the tale helped to convince me. But I’m not gonna lie… it does hurt!

@Nstar: Message me and I’ll give you the deets.

@MsPopcorn: Lucky!

@Samantha: I wish I had known to take Advils! I totally will next time.

@Miss Cherry Pie: That was an awesome post, I may have to try that next time. At least now my curiosity about waxing has been put to rest. ;-)

@Miss Sea Breeze: Yup, advils…30 minutes before…are supposed to help out. I was told to take “2 advils” but I don’t have much tolerance for pain so I take 3! lol Let us know if that helps out next time. :)

Oh ladies, I’m doing electrolosis down there (supposedly 6 treatments and never a need to shave again!), and it makes the wax feel like a nice, gentle treatment.

I chose not to do brazilian, but I’m only 1 treatment in , so I may still change my mind :)

One insane friend of mine did electrolysis (yeah — laser the hair, tweeze it, laser another hair, tweeze it out) 1 treatment/week for over a year. Yikes!

@Kenzie: Ahhh, thought about that but it’s not so good for ladies of color. It leaves scarring. Not sexy. At all. 1 day when electrolysis works with brown chicas, maybe I’ll reconsider it. Sounds painful (and expensive), though! My brazilian costs $35 - in NYC, which is amazing. Plus, I give my waxer a $10 tip…just b/c she’s all up in my *stuff*. :)

The best waxers chat with you all the way through as a way to attempt to keep your mind off the pain. Last time I chatted with her about her new veneers. They were quite striking. But be careful — sometimes they use this opportunity to talk you into other treatments like facials, and you’re too afraid to say no because of their imminent power to inflict pain : )

any good recommendations for great places in NYC? (and by great, i mean gentle, painless (ha)) i’m a wax virgin but with my wedding in 3 weeks - would love to have that all taken care of!

@CarolineG: LOL. True. But my waxer is great. We laugh and she constantly apologizes for ripping my hair off of me. LOL I recommend her to everyone, though her schedule get quite packed in the summertime, especially, when her appointments her spaced 15 minutes apart (so don’t be late)!

@melanie: The salon I go to is called Avalon Day Spa - 112 Christopher Street (NYC). I see Agata (a-ga-ta). Good luck!

The other thing, besides Advil, that I’d recommend is bringing A&D Ointment. The person who coached me into getting brazilian waxes told me that before she discovered A&D Ointment, she broke out in nasty bumps that looked like an STD. Wayyy less sexy than bush *down there.*

thanx for sharing. my wedding is 11/01/08 and i am on the fence about whether i want to take the plunge. if i do, it needs to be within a few weeks so i know how i will “react” down there.

PLEASE, PLEASE do an update post and let us virgins know if any rashes, irritation, ect happens. let us know if it DOESN’T and what you did afterwards to prevent them.

thank u for sharing such a personal experience! :)

can anybody comment on how frequently you have to maintain the wax?

@CarolineG: She totally chatted the whole time, though I must admit, I was in the middle of telling her something when the first strip was ripped off, and I COMPLETELY forgot what I was talking about!

@GetMarried4Less: I totally will! My friends told me to definitely go get it done a few times before the wedding though, you don’t want your first time to be right before, in case you get a reaction or whatnot.

You crack me up Sea Breeze! But I think I’m going to have to go pop 3 advils right now to deal with the pain I’m vicariously feeling.

@GetMarried4Less: once month is good enough for most folks!

@Miss Sea Breeze: It always seems like my waxer asks me a question right before she is about to rip my hair off. So, I always have to pause before answering her. So, I never forget, I just brace myself before I can respond! LOL The chatting always makes the time fly by.

Have y’all’s fiances considered brazilians, too? My FBIL told me he wants to get waxed. I told him to visit my waxer. She said sometimes couples go in together (to make it easy for the guy on his first time). I asked her if sh gets turned on by his stuff and she said no - that it shrivels up and hides. lol My H2B definitely is not interested in any kind of waxing “down there” but apparently lots of men are regulars. So, us ladies are not the only ones talking about this stuff. :)

all of you ladies are way braver than me - i had to be dragged in to get just my eyebrows waxed (did them before the e-photos)! I’m thinking of doing threading or sugaring instead though as I’ve heard they’re less painful…

@samantha - the brazilians on guys is too funny…though it doesn’t surprise me considering what part of town your salon is in :D

@samantha: The day Mr SB goes for a brazilian is the day I shave my head. When I proudly showed him the waxed bits (c’mon, you totally do it too), his eyes widened and he just shook his head and told me I was crazy.

@lunapark: LOL True! :) Gotta love NYC!

@Miss Sea Breeze: OMG. Noooo, I’ve never saved my waxed bits. LMAO. You are nuts. haha. Mr. SB said you’re crazy (which you are for saving the bits. lol) but I’m sure he still loved/loves the finished product!! ;-)
