At this point in the planning process, there’s nothing that pleases me more than sending out a signed contract. I take that back - there’s one thing that’s better: a signed paid contract. When Champ and I first spoke about the wedding, I asked him to think of two things that he would splurge on regardless of the cost. I honestly wasn’t surprised that his answer was a good photographer and a fun band. And finally we’ve sent in our contract for the photographer! Wooo wooooo!
Setting out to find a photographer from a thousand miles away can be tough. Unless the photographer has a ton of samples online or they’ve got a blog highlighting some of their best work, it can be difficult to get a true feel for their style. Not only did we want someone who would expand on our snowy romance-filled affair, we really wanted someone who would be able to portray our story throughout the day. We wanted a photojournalistic style… so where’s a girl to turn?
Our resource was the Wedding photojournalist Association, and from there we were able to find exactly what we wanted in a photographer.
We found Adam Welch… and I’m so excited to work with him! I got the chance to chat about our wedding and how we pictured the day, and it just fit. We wanted our story told, and as it turns out, Adam started as a newspaper photographer. The wonderful thing about wpja.com is that you can view award winning images from the selected photographer. Here are some of Adam’s winning photos and a just few of my favorites..

I love the emotion captured in this photo

And of course, the group shot… I’m such a sucker for the jumping shots!

So photojournalism is the style we’ve decided to use to capture our big day. Although some photographers are not into the traditional portraits, we were fortunate enough that Adam incorporates both journalistic and traditional portraits into his photos.
We’re also very glad that we’ve found someone who is willing to listen and communicate with us. A few years ago at my brother and sister in law’s wedding, the photographer came up to my SIL during the reception demanding extra money! Talk about a serious lack of communication and a major no-no in my book!
How did you find your perfect photographer and did you have a certain style in mind?
