Something to Hold

Something to Hold : wedding denver IMG 4291

I feel so blessed that on our wedding day we will be surrounded with our friends and family, but unfortunately minus my Grandma Alice. I’ve known that she would not be attending our wedding for some time. Almost five years ago, she was diagnosed with liver cancer. And being the feisty Norwegian woman that she is, has survived not one but two tumors in her liver, but unfortunately the tumor has spread to her lungs. Making the trek from Montana to Colorado would be brutal for her, so I’d rather she be at the wedding in spirit than in pain.

To symbolize her presence, I asked her to send me some thing that would remind me of her and this came in the mail – a doily she crocheted. I remember my grandma crocheting since I was a little girl, and her homemade doilies are scattered all throughout her home.

I think I am going to make it into a handkerchief and hold it during the ceremony. What do you think?

Are your grandparents or relative unable to make your wedding for health reasons? What did you do to incorporate them into your day in spirit?

That’s very sweet! Colorado can be so tough with the altitude and that’s a perfect way for you to include her :)

I like the handkerchief idea, but I think that you could also use the doily to wrap around your bouquet, or in your veil/headpiece.

I typically just peruse this site, not much of a poster, but this really caught my heart.

My grandma, also a feisty Norwegian woman, fought through two boughts of cancer and lived in Montana until she passed away about 6 years ago. I am planning on wearing her sterling silver Solje pin at my wedding next month.

I only have one other grandparent living, my mom’s dad who won’t be able to attend the wedding. He is in a nursing home, and has had fairly severe memory problems the past few months. He is the only grandparent left for both my fiance and me.

I don’t know how else we’ll honor them, probably in bouquet charms or maybe displaying their wedding photos at the reception.

I think your idea of having the doily/handkerchief would be a lovely tribute to your grandma.

Yes, my grandfather is battling cancer so we are donating money to the american cancer society in place of wedding favors. I love how your idea is something your grandma made… so sweet!

I’ve found that while I may want my family members to be there for my wedding day, many will not be able to make the journey. We’ve decided that we will send a nice note to those that won’t be able to make it and will make sure to add something to the ceremony that will be our way of including those that weren’t able to come.

My Pap is 97 and lives a 8 hour plane ride away, so I knew he wasn’t coming. I will have a wedding photo of he and my grandma (who passed 12 years ago) attached to my bouquet. BTW, I have those placemats!

I would make it part of the ring pillow then use it on your bed or elsewhere in your house afterwards.

I have a Norwegian Grandma Alice, too!

Mr Y has one kind of “moody” grandma. We are trying to prepare ourselves for the fact that she may wake up the morning of and decide she doesn’t want to go.

This is something that I have been considering a lot ever since getting engaged last month because although all 8 great-grandparents and 4 grandparents were alive when I was born, I now only have my two grandmas and two great-grandmas, having lost my last grandfather to cancer last year. I want to honor them, but I also don’t want to make a happy day a sad one.

I found a picture of a wedding that has a table at the reception that had wedding photos from all their family and friends that they wanted to honor in all these unique vintage frames and then a special bouquet at the table. I almost cried when I saw it. It will be a way for me and my F to have people there that we love while adding to the happiness of the day.

I’m also playing with the idea of asking other relatives to bring copies of their wedding pictures and finding a way to display those.

I love this idea! I’m trying to think of a way to remember our grand parents who have passed. (Between the two of us we had 10 grandparents but only 4 are still living now.) This is wonderful though!

What about getting a vase to display your flowers during the reception, and setting the vase on the doily? You could have the photog get some pretty shots and then make sure you send some to her so she can display them. I am sure she would LOVE it!
