The Grandma Quilt

August 14th, 2008 @ 12:02 pm by Mrs. Avocado

This weekend we received our first wedding gift. In our family, Great-Grandma N makes every grandchild (and now great-grandchild) a quilt when they get married. My sister sleeps with one quilt that my mom received from our grandma, and I sleep with another. Now I’ll be able to take one of these quilts with us no matter where we live.

I’m already completely redesigning the dream master bedroom I had in my head to best frame this gorgeous work of art. This will be the first thing packed in my suitcase when we move to Poland someday.

I don’t know anything about sewing or quilting, but I know what a work of love something like this is, and I appreciate the effort grandma makes for each and every one of us. I called her immediately to thank her for the beautiful gift with such a “gorgeous swirly pattern”.

What kinds of treasures have you received from friends and family members?

My mother-in-law is a quilter, and she made us the most gorgeous quilt when we got married. I knew she was making it, but I wasn’t ready for how beautiful it was going to be. It’s the only wedding gift we got that made me cry. :-)

Your quilt is stunning! Definitely worth redesigning a dream room around.

We didn’t receive a quilt but we got a hand crotched blanket in our wedding colors for an engagement party gift by a family friend’s sweet Mother. It’s such a thoughtful gift to have. It’s something that we can snuggle in with each other or our kids. That blanket will always remind me of the person who made it for us who unfortunately is 94 and going downhill with her health. :’(

My mom makes everyone in the family a quilt for major life events - graduations and weddings so far, but I bet when my cousins start having kids they’ll get baby quilts as well.

I think I’m going to be the odd family member out, though; with everything else Mom is making me for the wedding, I can’t imagine she’ll have time for a quilt as well! Maybe we’ll get one for our anniversary? Quilts are definitely a treasure - that one is beautiful!

my grandmother has this blanket she has been working on forever…since I was in middle school. it’s made up of a two inch square stuffed with cotton then sewed on a bigger block with 9 squares…it now fits a full size bed. it’s amazing and super comfortable. everyone in the family wants to but my grandma told me this summer that it’s my college grad gift!
yay! i’m very excited about it…it’s going to be a great heirloom.

I cried when I opened a handmade quilt from my aunt! She makes one for every cousin and we all have cried. There’s just something about a handmade gift that is so touching!

I have a great Cedar Chest that was a gift to my great grandmother when she got married. It’s about 100 years old and still is gorgeous.

One gift I treasure is a ring. Simple yellow gold with three small stones: a ruby an emerald and a sapphire.
What’s special about it? My grandfather who passed away 4 years ago had given it to my grandmother. I always think about both of them when I look at it and I definitely treasure it.

I love that your grandmother created this tradition. I think that items that come from the heart like that and that are passed on from generations to generations are worth everything.
So are you going to learn to make some so you can carry on the tradition in many many years> ;)

my mom is making me an absolutely amazing double wedding ring quilt - with batik fabric! I love what I’ve seen so far of it. She is working really hard and it’s the first double wedding ring quilt she’s ever made - there are a lot little pieces to it and a lot of hand quilting. She’s making a quilt for each of her 5 children when they get married. It’s a great keepsake!

That’s so cool! My guy’s aunt is an art quilter, so when we told her we were getting married, she was all over it. The thing is gorgeous and we love how personalized a quilt is (I’m a blanket collecting fiend). Now that I’m pregnant, she’s gearing up to make one for the kid too!

Don’t you just love creative family members?

Beautiful. When I was a kid, my dad’s great aunts made each of us cousins a quilt. My brother (who was in womb at the time) was the last to get one before they passed. When I was in college I used my quilt as a bedspread. Then, my junior year while on spring break a tornado hit the town my school was in, and a lot of the campus was detroyed. Of all the things I owned, my quilt was the thing I was most worried about.

@Jodi: The wedding is probably one of the last times I will ever get to spend with this Grandma. I love that I will always have a part of her with me in some way.

@Jayme-Lyn: Wow! What an amazing amazing gift. She must have been working on it for something like 10 years now. I bet she is so proud of you for graduating from college.

@Sarah: My mom has a hope chest and it made me realize what a wonderful gift they are to have. 100 years, amazing!

@MrsFroggy: One day, when I’m a mom, I hope to be able to make things that can be passed down. For now, I will work on preserving the things that I am given :)

@Angel: I really do, and I am lucky to have a ton of them too!
