My Greatest Fear

August 18th, 2008 @ 12:49 pm by Mrs. Avocado

I have a fear. It’s not of bugs, heights, or death. It’s of missing teeth.

When I was in 4th grade, a kid named Cody knocked his hard head into my mouth and knocked my front tooth out. My dental assistant mother knew enough to soak it in milk until they could get me to the doctor to have it glued back on the next day. Later, I was playing tag around my house with a little boy who just came up to my nose, when he decided to switch directions as we were running and ran straight into me, knocking it out again (more glue please!). The next time it happened I was playing with one of those kick boards that float, and I was having fun pulling it under the water as far as I could and watching it shoot back out again. I leaned over a little too far and watched it come up and knock me in the mouth. If you can believe it, we found the little trooper tooth again and glued it on once more.

Fast forward 5 or 6 years to a snowboarding trip my senior year of high school. I couldn’t get my glove off my frozen fingers, so I bit down hard and pulled, and felt a weird sensation in my mouth. I rescued the little tooth once again, but the dentist decided it was time for a crown. I had a root canal, and spent about 2 months with a loose tooth cover that popped off to reveal this:

I thought I was set for life with the shiny new crown that my mom and dad bought for me, but a year ago I bit down on a Subway sandwich and proceeded to cry when I realized that it had fallen off again. I’ve since gone in to the dentist four more times to have it glued back on.

I can’t afford a new crown right now, so I am struck with fear every time I bite into a taco or toasted sandwich. Eating with me can be an interesting experience as I sometimes spit my half chewed food out because I am positive it has come off again, and I am scared to death that I will swallow it.

As far as the wedding day goes, I am not sure what to do. It’s a time where you are smiling constantly, and the toothless smile above is not what I want to be flashing all day. I guess one of my bridesmaids will be packing superglue in case of any tooth related emergencies.

What do you fear might go wrong on your wedding day?

Its so funny that you would write this today bc/ I was just stressing about my teeth this morning. I had a hige gap in my teeth growing up which always really affected my self esteem more than anything else. when I was in college I finally got it fixed although its not a permenant fix. They told me that after about 5-8 years it may chip off and need to be replaced. So I constantly afraid it has chipped and would have to go to work with my teeth looking silly until I could get in for a dental appt. plus its expensive. It may seem vain but my teeth are the one part of my appearance I am most sensitive about.

I actually have dreams about my teeth falling out, which I guess is not that rare. However, I would say that you really need dentalwork before leaving the country. The dental care is eastern Europe is famously awful. I have crowns on all four front teeth after breaking them in a ski accident - and they are bulletproof - have never had any trouble with them at all. You absolutely shouldn’t have to worry about losing one in a sandwich unless it was just badly applied in the first place.

You aren’t the only one. I lost both front adult teeth in an accident on the playground.

My two front teeth are now natural as they moved two others over to the empty spot, but they have fake buildup on them to shape them like normal front teeth.

With this comes fears. Are they ready to crack, will I bite down on the wrong food too hard.

Can I save enough money for bleaching? Etc. Bleaching means not only bleaching but getting all new buildup. It will be over $500 for the first time.

There are a lot of things I can’t eat. Thick sandwiches, corn on the cob, apples, candy. Everything has to be cut in little pieces for me.

I have a very similar tooth story - although it is the other front tooth. I was pushed into a metal door frame (accidentally) at a Girl Scout meeting in 4th grade. I had the root canal then, and had a fake shaped for me until I stopped growing and could get a crown.

The crown wears differently, so now my teeth are two different shades, but they are very close so you can’t tell unless you’re staring at my mouth. I have opted not to get them bleached, and at-home methods won’t work on the crown.

In the end, I accepted that it does not bother me on a daily basis and that wedding photos can be photoshopped. I do feel for you about the fear of it falling out!!

LOL! I had the exact same fear but slightly different: I had two dental implants done last year and the process is quite lengthy (I thought it would be a one step deal but no) and I was starting to have nightmares that my wedding pictures would be marred by the toothless wonder that I am. Everything worked out fine though.
My only other worry afterwards was to have dreadful tan lines that would show in my strapless gown. I tan very very easily and sprayed any exposed skin with spf 50 every time I stepped outdoors.

Miss Avo, I have the exact same fear too! I knocked out my two front teeth while skateboarding at the age of 9. Since then they have fallen out at random times and been reapplied. Ugh. I have so many nightmares about this! And I also have a picture just like yours!! I totally understand where you are coming from! I pray my teeth stay putthrough wedding day and honeymoon.

I had to get root canals done to my two front teeth from a bike accident I had. I flew off my bike and fell on my teeth. I had crowns done too and I had them fall out a few times. I asked my dentist to change the cement they were using to flue the teeth. Also, do not use those sonic care brushes because the vibrations will loosen the cement/glue. I bit down on food toward the side of my mouth now. Losing your front teeth is the worst thing ever! I always have nightmares of my teeth missing or falling out. Try asking your dentist for the tougher glue.

The implants are the best. I have a good friend who has several - we call them the Frankenteeth. They do take forever though - first the jaw has to fill in from the extraction, then the screw has to be implanted and that has to heal before then can set the tooth. But its way better then a bridge.

Soul Sistah! I had the same problem with my front tooth, since I was 6 years old. Finally I had it crowned a couple years ago. The other 3 of my 4 fronts have all suffered chips and cracks over years of accident-proneness too, so they’re all veneered. So. Expensive. but worth it.

I’ll send you good tooth juju!

I always have dreams about my teeth falling out. I wonder why those are so common. Reading about your experiences, I’m sure I’ll have nightmares tonight, yikes!

I have an implant, but not because I lost a tooth. I had a baby tooth there, but I didn’t have a permanent one grow underneath. So they stuck one in. I don’t understand why they didn’t just pull my other teeth over with braces and then not bother to take out that wisdom tooth, but whatever. Was only like $10,000 X(

This is hilarious. (not your issue Ms Av) Who knew there were so many of us with teeth issues!! I have 9 fake teeth (from a variety of different things - including falling out of a tree and landing face first on a root!) I gotta tell ya Miss Avacado, this is one of those times when an investment is worth the payoff. n a couple ways.
Get them to cap both of your front teeth and maybe even hooking into the little one next to it like a bridge. This has a couple bonus aspects. 1 incredibly durable (they tell me that IF I EVER have to get them replaced, something must have gone seriously seriously wrong) and that they are all the same color. I like you, had one dead tooth for a long time… and then the discoloration started to set in. Not a pretty picture.
I have to agree with the above statement of - whatever you do - get it done before you leave the country!

I LOVE that picture! I also stress out about the chicklets that are my teeth. I wear a retainer every night to try to keep them straight and I’m constantly worried it’ll be lost and I’ll be snaggle-toothed (a new verb) on our wedding day.

What about a soup diet until your wedding? I would last for about a week.

Photoshop, my dear! (That’s my answer when i think of the possibilities of pimples, rashes, ruined makeup and stray hairs. A cop-out, I know.. but technology is awesome!!)

I had no idea this was such a prevalent issue. I’m undergoing some major dental issues right now. Most of it is in the back, but it doesn’t stop me from eating carefully or freaking out every time a bite down on something hard.

I, like Sandra, avoid the Sonicare. I blame it for some of my cracking/breaking problems.

omg. i had a root canal and crown prep last week. my new crown will hopefully be ready before my wedding in less than 7 weeks. when i was 8 i cracked my front teeth running full speed into a sliding glass door. i’ve had them fixed a few times, but i’m still terrified i’ll wake up on my wedding day to the bonded part gone.

ok contrary to Emerald- your post made me laugh- just because that picture of you was awesome and I had to wait in suspense for the page to load to see it. But I know that if it was something that I was personally worried about… than I would not be laughing… I wouldn’t even smirk. So I hope with all my heart that your tooth stays in for your wedding, honeymoon, and forever :)

I feel for you. I lost my front tooth in a horrible horrible accident… I was piggyback racing and my piggy fell down and I was thrown from his back. I broke my fall with my face. I still have recurring falling-teeth nightmares that feel horrible, and I eat sandwiches with the side of my mouth :(

Oh, and I forgot to mention– I hate hate hate my implant! It comes out horrible in pictures, especially in pictures without flash. The opacity is different and it’s slightly wider near the top. I almost knocked out the front tooth next to it, too, it got pushed back but the dentist just pulled it forward with his fingers. I only look good in pictures smiling, so I smile all the time, but I don’t know what to do about whitening my teeth because then I’d have to replace the fake.

OMG, turns out I’m not crazy after all!

Not only do I tooth fears, I lose sleep over it sometimes because I would have a dream where they all fell out or some craziness.

I have a crown up front that’s been there well over 5 years and I’m ALWAYS sure its going to pop out while on a trip or now the wedding. Worse still is thinking that I’ll swallow the dang thing.

I say visit the dentist a few days prior and have them test or reinforce/re-glue/cement (whatever it takes) that puppy in. Make sure they know your wedding is a few days away too.

Thanks for the post. It was not only funny but reassuring in its own crazy kind of way.

OMG….I was laughing so hard when I was reading your 1st paragraph…not @ you of course, but b/c of the way you wrote it. I could totally picture the kickboard….sounds like something I would do. Plus you put a pic of you with your post….ur hilarious~ My fear is falling down the marble stairs where I have to walk down as I am getting introduced to my guests who will be waiting at the foot of the stairs……

This post is really old…. but I feel your pain! I never got a baby or adult ‘tooth between the big tooth and canine’. So right up front. We opened up the space when I had braces. For a while I had a tooth on my retainer - so I could take it in and out. Then I had a Maryland bridge that had a tendency to fall out at the worst times! I have many embarrassing pictures with a missing front tooth. I finally got an implant/crown. Which hasn’t given many any problems - but you have me scared now!! :)
