Journey to a Beautiful Smile

August 19th, 2008 @ 12:01 pm by Mrs. Martini

Whenever I think about my teeth, a certain commercial comes to mind. I’m not exactly sure what the commercial was for but I think it was for a whitening toothpaste. In the commercial, a grade school teacher is addressing her classroom. She is pointing out objects in the room and the children respond with the color of the object in unison.

“What color is this pencil?”
“Yellowww”.
“What about this book?”
“Greeeennn”

Then she asks the class, “What color are my teeth?” with a huge smile on her face.

The class sits in dead silence for a few seconds while the kids try to figure out the color. One by one the kids try to guess.

“Ivory”
“Cream”

Then you see a closeup of a little girl who says, “Mother. of. Pearl.”

It was a long time ago but it still cracks me up when I think about that little girl. She comes to mind when I look in the mirror and realize that my teeth could use a makeover, and it’s been on my mind a little more often these days now that the wedding is getting closer.

In the past I’ve tried Crest Whitestrips but they make my teeth sensitive so I upgraded to GoSmile, which I have to admit is the best, most convenient, and really really works. But I notice that these days, those light technology teeth whitening booths in malls seem to be all the rage. I was curious, but the $145 dollar price tag was holding me back. Then I realized—one package of GoSmile runs for about $89 before tax. You really have to get at least two packages to see a huge difference and before you know it you are spending $180. What if the light technology works? I will be spending $145 for teeth that are up to 5 shades whiter in just 15 minutes! Yes, I admit I’m a bit of spaver! but I decided to try it with one of my BMs, who was eager to try it as well. If it exceeded my expectations, I would come back for another session just before my wedding day.

The booth at my local mall. During conversations with the salesperson at the booth, I found out that they are still using bleach, and it’s not exactly the light that makes your teeth white. The light only makes the whitening faster and stronger.

Reading the directions on what I will be doing for the next 15 minutes.

s15998502

Me, looking slightly scared.

s15998503

Elle says, “piece of cake!”

s15998504

15 minutes is a long time to wait, so they play music videos to keep you occupied. You are allowed to choose only between Mariah Carey or Celine Dion. I wasn’t sure which of the two would least likely make me want to kill myself so I just shrugged my shoulders. They ended up playing Celine Dion for me. Elle chose Mariah Carey.

The results of my session. The first tooth on the left is the whitest, while the last tooth is the darkest. I measured at 7 shades in (the tooth turned over sideways towards the middle of the model), which wasn’t too bad according to the sales person, but I still cringed. After, I measured at 2 shades in, which was 5 shades lighter than 15 minutes before! Elle’s results were four shades lighter.

Overall, I have to admit that it works. There was no sensitivity at all, either! If money isn’t an object for you, I would recommend getting this done to kick start the whitening process, then using GoSmile to whiten parts that might have been missed. I guess it beats paying $600-$800 to ask your local dentist to whiten your teeth!

What’s your favorite teeth-whitening method?

I’m glad I’m not the only one who remembers that TV commercial! I still crack up when I think of it. Anyway, I had my teeth whitened with a doped-up version of the drugstore teeth whiteners, and it was an uncomfortable experience. My teeth and gums wouldn’t stop tingling for hours! So while it did a good job, and in retrospect I’m glad I did it, at the time it was being done, I wanted out of it. :P

Good to know your experience… Although I have heard that it may not be the safest route because of regulation on the booths that vary from state to state. Here in NC I know a booth was shut down in a mall because they were misleading customers into thinking that they were medical professionals and could therefore give medical/dental advice, when in fact they were just sales people. They made you do all the “work” and never actually touched your mouth. Not sure it works how you went but at least you got results safely! :)

Our local mall has something similar for $100 for 20 minutes, I believe. The quick fix is sooo tempting, but I am afraid it won’t work … so it really works, huh?

@MissPanda: you know what? now that i think about it, they did not touch me at all, and made me do everything myself. I was ok with that though, because it was just basically just putting a mouthpiece on and i preferred to do it myself anyway. also, they didnt give me any dental advice at all and never came off to me as a professional. from the beginning i assumed they were sales people. but i can see how some people might take advantage of that….

@jennyt: hi jenny! yes it is menlo mall! if you’re in the area, i was actually at woodbridge mall not too long ago and it was actually cheaper there (i think there was a special going on for 125).

i dont think your teeth will be SUPER white like in that friends episode when ross got his teeth whitened (imagine that?). even though i was measured at 5 shades lighter, the difference between the shades were very small. I would compare this to using a package of crest whitestrips, only getting the results in 15 minutes rather than a week, with no sensitivity.

according to the sales people, it lasts about 4-6 months. would i do it again? I think i would, if i want a quick fix and if a just happened to have some extra cash lying around… which unfortunately is probably not going to happen any time soon.

Hmmm, I’ve never seen these at our mall, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled! In the meantime, I’ve been using Crest Premium Whitening Strips! I’ve used GoSmile too, and they are pretty comparable!

I’ve never seen one of those in the mall, but now I need to go to more malls and find one… P.S. you are a brave soul, I cannot stand Celine or Mariah - I think I’ll bring my iPod if I find one ;)

Hmm, I have seen a booth like this at my local Sam’s club and had been considering it but didn’t know if it would be a total waste. I don’t have the patience for strips, etc and they make my teeth hurt. Maybe I’ll go ahead and give this a try. Thanks for the post!

This reminds me of the “Friends” episode where Ross dyes his teeth so white that they glow in the dark! ;-)

I remember the commercial, too, and one of the kids guesses was ecru, which sound so funny said by a little kid!

Thanks so much for posting on this! I’ve been DYING to know if it works…it always seemed like such a joke but was still in business somehow — and I guess that’s because it WORKS!

And, you are too funny about the commercial — I had completely forgotten all about it until I read your post and it immediately came back to me! TOO FUNNY!

Glad you got good results. I am thinking of going to the dentist myself. $150 for the first treatment in house, $75 after that, or $258 for the appliance. Not bad, in my opinion.
