About Mrs. Avocado

Mr. Avocado agreed to take dancing lessons. Great!

Miss Avocado decided to move home for 2 1/2 months right before the wedding. Boo.

The Avocados do not plan on seeing each other for the entire 2 1/2 months. Double Boo.

Mr. Avocado and Miss Avocado have taken 2 lessons and practiced one time, and naively think they will be able to show off some sweet moves despite having had very little time dancing together beforehand.

Look at the intense manner in which Mr. Avocado is focusing on the next move!

If you live in Dallas, I highly recommend Beata Howe. Mr. Avocado was a little wary of the idea of dance lessons, but after our first set with her he told her 3 or 4 times that we would definitely be back. Her prices are great, and she lets you do as many lessons (or as little) as you like!

Anyone else thinking they might go with the 8th grade sway after their dancing lessons?

i’m going with the sway. i’d much rather sway around the dance floor, which is more my style anyway, than trying to impress people with formal steps. all the people who did take lessons for their first dance showed it on their faces. it seemed like instead of enjoying the moment for what it is [your first as a married couple] they’re stressing over remembering which step is next.

We took one dance lesson … but are going to have my parents teach us! We’re going to practice in my parents’ basement - they are GREAT dancers, and I’m hoping they can help show us a few steps. I want to look like we know what we’re doing, but not TOO rehearsed!

We’re having a first dance with “fancy” moves (I wouldn’t go so far to say that they are super fancy or really intense, but it’s more than just the basic step) but I think it’s going to be fun! We get to show lots of attitude and still be close to one another… but I guess that’s also because we have practised it lots!

We are taking dance lessions and private lessons and Mr. PN thinks that we are going to rock it on the dance floor… I have a feeling that all of the excitement/emotion/nervousness is going to take over and we will end up doing the sway anyhow!

The best way to bring off a choreographed dance routine (especially when you’re not professional dancers) is to practice and rehearse again and again and again. When it becomes second nature, then enters the element of spontaneity and fun.

@Tea: I disagree; I think you can find a happy medium between the two. We took lessons and specifically told our instructor that we didn’t want the 8th grade sway, but we also didn’t want to look like we were trying too hard. In the end, it was perfect and our guests even commented on the fact that they could tell we were really having fun.

We took swing dance lessons, but rather than learn a choreographed routine, we just learned 6 or 8 “tricks” that DH could throw in when he felt like it. That way he didn’t have to worry about what came next, but we weren’t boring ourselves with swaying for 5 minutes.

I have to agree with Mrs. Corn - we learned some basic steps together with a nice little dip at the end and it wasn’t tough to remember at all. We had a great time, and going to dance lessons was a favorite wedding prep “chore” for both of us.

We took two months worth of dance lessons (ballroom two-step) at the local senior center. It was a blast - and there were actually people of all ages there. The two-hour, once a week lessons were $40 a month (what a deal!) and as there were four instructors, you actually got a lot of individual attention. Then we had our band record a cd with our first dance song, and practiced a few times at home. Since we weren’t doing “routine” (not our style) but just sets of basic moves over and over, once you decide the order of the moves you really don’t have to think much. Which clearly shows in our photos, as I think every photo of us dancing at the wedding shows us laughing or talking while we’re dancing. Everybody said that we looked very smooth. Turns out that DH is sort of a natural Fred Astaire type, and didn’t even know it. This month we are taking basic swing, and really having fun. In November there are salsa classes!!!
