About Mrs. Shortcake

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in my wedding planning, is that if it feels good, do it. And if you have little niggling thoughts that won’t go away, don’t do it.

Quite simple really.

One of my glue-fume-induced bouts of creativity saw me making hand sewn felt and vintage button flowers to embellish my and my bridesmaid’s bouquets. I had them all ready to go…

When I finally admitted that:

a) They were too “cute” and country for our dresses (satin and felt are a hard match).

b) Some of my bridesmaids might forget and throw out the felt flowers along with their bouquets. Felt flowers that took twenty minutes each to make…EEK!

I had a five minute visit to bummed-town, and then I had a different, brilliant idea—why don’t I just put all my flowers together into a rehearsal bouquet for me? Most often, the bridesmaids will make a adorably tacky bouquet out of bows and wrapping from the bridal shower, and because I didn’t get one, my felt and button flowers would substitute nicely! As well, this little bouquet could stand in as decoration on the guest book table, so it would be twice as useful…

Rationalizations done, I set to work…

SUPPLIES:

  • vintage buttons (donated by my sweet senior friend)
  • felt
  • embroidery floss
  • needles
  • scissors
  • florist wire
  • satin ribbon (from www.papermart.com - same as on the invitations)
  • wire cutters
  • glue gun
  • various ribbons for flower accents

I’m so pleased, not only because I think the bouquet looks purty, but because I got to use my felt and button flowers after all.

P.S. If any of you like the look of this bouquet, make sure to check out these amazing bouquets sold by my friend Megan here!

Is anybody else making or embellishing their bouquets?

I’m not sure if my plans count as embellishment necessarily, but it Irish tradition for the bride to carry a horseshoe on her wedding day [upside down, so the luck doesn't "run out" :) ]. We’re doing a fairly formal wedding and I didn’t think a horseshoe hanging from my bouquet would quite match, so I’m going to affix a small one to a flower pick and have the florist build the bouquet around it. I almost prefer doing it this way b/c the fact that only I know it’s there (I’ll proably tell my grandparents, too, since it’s their heritage I’m trying to honor) will make it more special to me :)

So cute! Great idea; your bouquet will look sweet in pictures, not the slightly goofy, like-a-children’s-birthday-party-threw-up look some bow and ribbon bouquets can take on. But, no shower for you? Was that per your request?

OMG! Adorable, I completely love it and would almost prefer that to the bow-quet I’d get from a shower.

I think that would make a great ‘breakaway’ tossing bouquet. Then all the single ladies could each get their won flower as a keepsake.
