It’s Going To Happen, Really

August 20th, 2008 @ 2:25 pm by Mrs. Avocado

I had never heard of a Save The Date until I started reading wedding blogs, and I actually thought they were kind of ridiculous. It seemed like an extra expense that everyone was tricked into thinking they needed. Then I started getting asked when our wedding was almost every week, sometimes by the same people over and over.

So I did the easiest thing possible and sent out an email. The “It’s going to happen, really” was added because I was still ring-less at that point. You can imagine how frustrated I was getting, planning a wedding with no one believing it was really going to happen.

It didn’t solve all of my problems, but it was free, and it got the message out to almost everyone.

Did you creatively get your guests to “save the date”?

I thought that STDs were stupid extra expenses as well, until I stumbled upon a graphic designer who made these black and white vintage looking concert posters with all the information on it. I fell in love instantly. The best part is, I did all the designing myself and formatted them to 8.5×11 so I could just print them off on my home printer, tri fold them and slip them into some creative string-tie #10 envelopes. My cost was like $20 for something my friends were raving about for weeks.

E-mails are great, I went with paper for the less techie relatives and family friends.

The strange thing is that despite the STDs, especially for extended relatives, my dad said relatives were asking why they hadn’t receive an official inviation THREE months before the date. Apparently they weren’t willing to buy place tickets and book hotels without receiving their invites despite having been sent a photocard STD five months before the wedding.

Save-the-dates saved my butt. We sent them out about five months before the wedding, and ended up having a big delay with our invites. Plus the caricature artist we used was hired for our wedding, so it all tied in. But yes, I’m a firm believer in save-the-dates now.

I think they are important. We have over half of our attendance coming from the east coast to the west coast, so they need time to prepare and save for that. Everyone else local, they need to prepare for requesting time off, and scheduling. So, definitely !!!

@scheerintraining: Those sound awesome! Much much better than my silly little email. I would totally hang something like that up on my fridge for years.
@Shilpa: I just created these myself using photoshop and a shot that my sister took of us at Thanksgiving.
@jezolondz: Absolutely hilarious. Did all of your guests get it? Did you get some of them hooked on any of the LOL websites after they saw the STD’s?

I love discovering so many others who are having their wedding on the same day or right next to mine!

I am having a similar issue with the whole trying to pre plan without a ring. We have decided on next Spring, but it’s definately harder to get people to take you seriously when you are not “officially” engaged. Have you found anything especially helpful with this?

@Lindsay: I know you don’t want to hear “get engaged” because I sure didn’t want to hear that anymore. I just told people that we do things our own way. Back when we started talking about marriage we decided that planning the wedding was my job, and proposing was his job. I was allowed to take the wedding planning at my own pace, and he was allowed to propose on his timeline. I told him that I wanted him to propose before I left for Washington and I left the rest up to him.

Some people, like your extended family, will never understand. When speaking to vendors (which was usually done over the phone) I found it was easier to call him my fiance and be done with it.

Miss Avocado, We’re date twins!! Exciting!!
It is also a good idea that you sent invites because it is Columbus Day (called Native American Day here in So. Dak.) weekend!!

Awesome STD cards - very cool! I was in the same boat for a while - planning a wedding without a ring. I was fine at the beginning and then starting getting impatient after a while. My fiance bought the ring and thought that he would be able to hold onto it for a month - HA, he proposed 3 days after getting the ring! We actually ordered our STD cards today and for me, it just makes things that much more official. I LOVE seeing our names and wedding date on paper!
