What Have You Spaved Lately?

August 20th, 2008 @ 12:22 pm by Mrs. Martini

In my last entry I mentioned that I was a bit of a “spaver”. Someone asked me to clarify the definition of a “spaver”, so I looked it up on Urban Dictionary but found that there wasn’t even a definition listed for it yet. When I thought about how I could best define a spaver, I suddenly thought of an old phrase I once read on an email chain:

A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs
A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn’t need but it’s on sale.

A spaver will usually spend money on something they don’t really need because they got a really good deal on it, and then justify spending the money because they “saved” what they would have spent had they paid full price.

I spave once in a while, but Mr. Martini and I always joke around that he is the biggest spaver ever. He once bought a high tech wine refrigerator because he found a great deal at 50% off. It’s nice that we now get to drink perfect temperatured wine, but he probably wouldn’t have bought it at that same price if it wasn’t 50% off!

But I have to admit that I’m a sucker for buy two get one free deals, even if I only need one. How about those sales where you get 3 t-shirts for $40? What if you only like two colors? Who’s guilty of buying two of the same color because you’re getting a deal? *sheepishly raises hand* I don’t know what it is about saving some money that makes you feel all giddy inside, but who doesn’t love saving a few bucks, even if it means having to spend a little to save a little?

We haven’t yet “spaved” for our wedding, but then again our planning is just getting started and I know that Mr. Martini and I are constantly on the lookout for great deals.

Tell me – Are you a spaver? What is your best spaving moment? Any recent wedding related spaves?

PS. Check out my Martini character! Notice anything different? I jokingly mentioned in one of my comments that I get sad when bartenders give me only two olives as opposed to three. I like having three so I can eat one with my first sip, eat the second one halfway through, and then finish off the last olive with the last sip. So Mrs. Bee surprised me by asking BIL Bee to add an extra olive, and change the cocktail stirrer color to red which I later realized matched my profile picture. Thank you! It’s SO CUTE! Sniffle… It’s the little things… :)

I love the upgraded icon!

I’m not too much of a spaver but Mr. PN is! He loves a good buy 2 get 1 free sale! I’m better categorized as “cheap” as I avoid spending money and always wonder if I “really need” anything!

I’m totally a spaver! I like one wedding dress that’s like $1200, and then I saw a used Monique for $3K - but originally $7K! I tried to explain to my mom why I should get the second dress, but she just shook her head at me.

The more ironic thing is, I wanted to spend less than $1k on the dress PLUS alterations.

My mom is a spaver - her motto is “It’s not what you spend, it is what you save”.

Love the updated martini glass :-)

I’m a total spaver! Just the other day I bought 5 cucumbers because it was “buy two get three free”. Who needs five cucumbers?

OMG my dad is the worst at this. The running joke in the family is that he was supposed to get staples at the store and ended up coming home with ice cream and a bunch of other stuff but not the staples (the 1 thing he was supposed to get). He also just got my parents a whole new bedroom set because Linen’s & Things is going out of business to it was a good deal. Hahahaha thats funny about the wine fridge totally what my dad does all the time.

I’m totally a spaver and Mr. Cookie is an actual saver!

I purchased red candle holders from Hobby Lobby for $1.99 because they were on sale, red, and pretty for the wedding. To justify the splurge, I said to myself that candle holders can be reuse at Christmas. Although, knowing myself they will probably gather dust in one of our cabinets!

Spaver! OMG - there’s finally a label for what I do! Thank you — you’ve got to name the problem before you can deal with it. LOL.

I used to work in retail, and I would laugh when a sweater would be on “promomotion” for $24.50 (reg $39.50) one day and be untouched. The next day it would go on “sale” for $24.99, and fly out the door! It’s amazing what the word “sale” can do!

My mom is a spaver and a returner too! She tapes receipts to the the bottom of the things!

If the price is reasonable enough, I would usually go for it….or play with the motto, “do you really NEED it vs WANT it?!?”

I was so against buying cream color shoes for this wedding I’ll be FINALLY attending this weekend…I found them for only $3.00 at Marshalls…nice ones too and I definitely snatched those up!

@Miss Pomegranate: Ditto I am the same way about my olives too… I always feel foolish asking for so many.
I am also a total spaver - I just bought a dress this weekend b/c it was 70% off.

Spaver! LOVE IT! I actually almost bought a wedding dress not because I was in love with it, but rather cause it was 80% off…a TOTAL spaving moment. After a frantic call to my Mom (a stellar spaver) just wisely advised me to walk away! Whew!

Oh and I love my martinis the same way too! And extra dirty…I love olives!

Phew! For awhile, I wasn’t seeing the updated martini glass icon — still two olives and the non-red stirer — and I thought I was going cr-azy!

My uncle is a total spaver. He once bought a desktop printer because it was a “great price.” Yeah, he didn’t have a computer. But our family did, so we got the printer! lol
His latest obsession is overstock.com. Most of my nice jewelery comes from him, not FI!

I’m totally with you on the martinis. Love them with extra olives, for the same reasons. My drink: Dry martini, extra olives.

i am embarrassed to admit i am a spaver. i’ve had like 10 boxes mailed to me from shopping online in the last 2 weeks! i recently bought a webcam b/c it would have come out free after rebate and while i asked my brother to send in the rebate for me, i also asked if he wanted it. his response: “why are you buying things you don’t need?” i figured i could make money by selling it on ebay. :-P

i’m also a returner too, which the bf cannot understand. we travelled for a wedding once and he forgot to bring undershirts so we were trying to shop for the cheapest ones possible. we found some reasonably priced ones and he couldn’t decided whether to get it in hopes he’d find it even cheaper. i told him, just buy it now and if you find cheaper ones, you can return it. his response: “i don’t think like that.”
