Mrs. Martini, New Jersey Age and Occupation: 30, Telecom by day, Superhero by night Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Investments & Finance by day, Hip hop dancer by night Engagement Date: May 24, 2008 Wedding Date: March, 2009 Blogging Since: August 18, 2008 Venue: The Venetian About Me: Things that make me happy: Haribo Happy Cola gummies, TV shows on DVD, buying books although I never read them, 80’s rock ballads, ramen, and of course Mr. Martini! He is the calm, logical and number crunching finance guy. I can’t even multiply double digit numbers in my head and I am so indecisive that trying to choose between light green or slightly lighter green paper stresses me out (Wedding planning is going to be soooo much fun). We both find great joy in nabbing great seats at the movie theater for a blockbuster movie on opening weekend, and we are both absolutely crazy about snowboarding. And he loves to cook, I love to eat!
About Mrs. Martini

My first experience with a band was about 8 or 9 years ago, when I attended my very first wedding. It was for one of my BM’s older sisters, and it was a lavish NYC affair. I remember walking into the reception hall and seeing a swing band perform for the first time. I had so much fun listening to the band that from then on, I knew that one day when I got married, I would want a band too.

Fast forward a few years to when I attended a wedding for a friend. It was the first wedding I attended that wasn’t for a sibling of a friend or family friend (yes, she was the first of my friends to go). It was a gorgeous NYC wedding in a loft, and when I walked in I was pleasantly surprised to see a band playing as well! They were just soooo good and it just reconfirmed my hopes in having a band (although the whole “swing” phase has long since died off).

If you know me you know that I’m a huge fan of concerts and live music. Years ago my friends and I would spend our weekends cheering for local bands at nearby bars, and I’ve even been to Bon Jovi concerts FOUR times, among many others.

Last year Mr. Martini and I attended the wedding of our friends Susan and Sam. I forget how the conversation started, but during the cocktail hour I briefly mentioned that the one thing I’ve wanted for a long time was a band on my wedding day. I was ok with cutting costs on anyyyyything else, but it had been a long time wish to be able to listen and dance to live music in a wedding dress. When I told Mr. Martini my hope and dream of hiring a band, he just thought it would be a waste of money.

That is, until we walked into the reception hall half an hour later and HE heard a band playing for the first time. I looked up at him with eyes that pleaded, “See? SEE? Totally worth the upgrade, no?” He nodded his head and admitted they were pretty damn good. Over the course of the night, this band really had the party going! They played everything from Usher to AC/DC to… yes….. BON JOVI’s Living on Prayer, which is like my personal anthem! I fell in love. This was the absolute perfect band.

When we got engaged I pretty much wanted to work the wedding date around the availability of this band (lol!). We were all set to hire, until we realized the cost to hire them, and we were on a budget. I was devastated. We did everything we could to arrange the budget around to work everything out. It took a while - many phone calls, editing and reediting of the budget, and even moral support from Susan, (who hired this band after seeing them perform at another wedding)…. but I am so excited to say that we have finally signed the contract to hire RESPEKT as our wedding band! We will definitely be cutting corners left and right for the rest of the wedding, but in the end it will be worth it. I can’t wait to play air guitar again with the main guitarist and his bright red guitar!

I was able to find a Youtube video of their sample music, but it really does not do the band justice.

Is there one wedding vendor you absolutely had to have?

Wow…I’ve always been against getting a band for my wedding, but if I could find one like this in Cleveland I think I would change my mind.

Oh, and can I be invited to your wedding? I promise to bring a reeaalll nice gift, and I don’t eat much ;)

Music was most important to us too! As soon as we booked the venue we started in searching for the perfect band — we booked them before our caterer or our photographer (and MONTHS before I started dress shopping. . .)! “The horn section” was most important to FI, and has a special mention on our website. We wound up with an amazing local jazz orchestra: SIX horns (woohoo!), guitar, upright bass, drums, keyboard, and three singers. I am looking forward to this more than almost any other part of the whole day! :D

This must be a regional thing, because I’ve never been to a wedding without live music. It just seems normal and a must for me. Anyway, I’m glad you got your band!

We went with an 8 piece band, and I’m so excited! Most weddings we’ve been to recently have had (annoying?) DJ’s, so I’m hoping the live music will get people excited.

Awesome! I’m so excited for you guys. I just went to a wedding in July that had a live band, and I’m a believer now.

The one thing we worked our budget around was a videographer. I would give up just about anything to save cost, but they were want I truly wanted, and I meant to have the best.

My husband and I splurged on a jazz band for our reception, and I am SO glad we did. It was the biggest expense after food/drink for the reception but it made the evening.

Hey EAQ219–I’ve heard Clevelander’s having great experiences with “Run Avril Run”

I was at a fundraiser event they performed at and the dancefloor was filled the entire night…
I’m pretty sure they have a website too!

My band made my wedding. Of course I am biased because I love to dance and thus they were the first vendor I hired. I have to admit, I actually hired them before I had the venue. If you like soul and funk that can have all generations on the floor, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Truth Groove in the Mid-Atlantic region. I had multiple people compliment me on the band — and at the end of the night at 1:15am there were 60-70 people left from my 150 person wedding. Best money ever spent.

Your reception is going to awesome!

I’ve never been to a wedding with a live band but it would have been an awesome to have one at our reception. Thankfully our DJ wasn’t cheesy and had the floor packed at the end of the night.

EAQ219- Ms. Dahlia had a live band for her Cleveland wedding. She might be a good person to ask…

@guest: thank you! =)

omigosh, respekt was AMAZING! i can’t even begin to describe how awesome they were. we got married three months ago and people are STILL talking about the band. i really do have to say that the wedding would not have been the same without them.

at one point, i thought that they were playing a CD, but they were in fact singing the entire time. they played tons of currents hits like single ladies, and oldies like sweet child of mine. i promise, you won’t regret hiring them if you do. we were dancing all night! i just haven’t had a chance to write a proper review yet, but it’s coming. =)
