Evelyn: The First Fitting

August 25th, 2008 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Avocado

My dress been sitting in the shop waiting for me for weeks now. I loved her the moment I saw her. I will call her Evelyn.

Mr. Avocado, no looking. Do it for me.

********************************

The seamstress laughed and laughed about this shot.

Back when I found Evelyn at Mockingbird Bridal in Dallas I forgot one major detail. I didn’t note what size I had tried on, and I was ordering my dress from a completely different bridal shop. When the owner of A Bride Beautiful asked me what size to order, I took a guess and had her order a size 10. My nervousness about fit was compounded by my 15 lb weight loss between the ordering and the fitting. Walking into the store I had no idea if the dress would be around my size or if I would be swimming in it.

She was a little big, but overall she fit quite nicely. Below you will find her all pinned up and marked for alteration. I will be adding one inch to the neckline, and two more inches of sleeves.

The back looks super funky and uneven because she is all pinned up to fit a little bit more snug, but you get the idea. I love the neckline in the back. I love the long trail of fabric covered buttons. I love my Evelyn.

Now on to the veil dilemma. I thought I wanted a birdcage, and that no other veil would even interest me. But you know bridal shops. They have no mercy, and tempt you with all of their overpriced goodies. Please excuse my veil descriptions, I don’t know the exact terminology, but I hope you get the idea.

Veil #1
Elbow length, double tiered, ribbon edged.

Veil #2
Waltz/fingertip length, double tiered, ribbon edged.

Veil #3
Waltz length, single tiered, ribbon edged.

Veil #4
The birdcage!

I think I am leaning towards the birdcage, because it shows off the back of my dress the most. I love the back, did I mention this?

Which veil should I wear?

I like the birdcage. Not only will it show off the back but it won’t hide the sleeves either, which I think are a lovely accent to the dress.

I’m also leaning towards the birdcage for my veil. I think yours looks fabulous on you.

Ok..so I LOVE it..not only because my name is Evelyn…and I love everything named after me but more because I spent 4 months looking for a dress with a portrait collar and COULD NOT FIND ONE!

Is this a Mon Cheri? What brand is the dress?

I’m getting married this weekend…and love my CHELSEA! But am floored to see this dress.

It’s so perfect for you!

What a beautiful dress. It looks much prettier than some of the modesty dress you tried I have to say. Very flattering and a cute name too.
I look forward to see what it will look like with the alterations.
Oh and I say birdcage, it looks perfect on the fist pictures and it adds something to your face that the classic veils don’t have.

As a birdcage bride myself, I am biased BUT I also really love the waltz length on you! I was super convinced of my birdcage too, but it’s true, you can get suckered in by the other options!

Consider this– most brides do not wear the veil during the reception so your guests will see your beautiful gown all night long!
Also you could always be a two veil gal and change into the birdcage for the reception???

I would be a two veil girl if I were you. You look very cute and sassy and fun in the birdcage, but you look elegant and bridal in the traditional veils. (Because you love the back of your dress, go with a single layer. Best of both worlds - doesn’t hide the back, AND looks elegant.)

You and Evelyn are a perfect match. I’m so glad you found each other! :-D I can’t wait to see all the alterations.

I voted for birdcage for a few reasons: 1) it really fits with the vintage-style neckline of the dress, 2) your dress is going to have more fabric than a lot of wedding dresses, so a birdcage will balance that out a little rather than add a lot of extra “stuff,” and 3) I really love when a very religious wedding (be it LDS, Orthodox Jewish, Catholic, whatever) has a little bit of funkiness thrown in, if it reflects the bride’s/couple’s personality. It seems like an easy and not-irreverent way to do that, if that makes sense…?

You are GORGEOUS! I’m actually doing 2 veils - cathedral for the ceremony and birdcage for pictures and bridal portrait session!

@Evelyn: Evelyn, I’m glad you approve of your namesake. It’s actually a Watters gown.

Shame on all of you for tempting me with the idea of buying two veils :) Rumor has it that my mom’s veil still exists….. I might be a two veil bride after all.
