Mad for Mantilla

August 25th, 2008 @ 6:54 pm by Miss Champagne

You’ve witnessed my mad love for damask, but I may be even MORE mad for the mantilla veil! The only requirement I had before dress shopping was that I would be wearing a mantilla. When I saw myself walking down the aisle to my best friend, I just couldn’t picture it any other way. So when I actually put one on my head, I was in lovvvvvve. Serious, obsessive lovvve.

The problem is, there aren’t many bridal shops that carry mantilla veils, and it’s hard to picture how they will look from a picture online. I may have a veil custom made by Sposabella or I may even make one myself. I just would have to find the perfect lace, and that might take just as long as finding a veil already made!

Another aspect I can’t quite put together is the blusher. I’d like to wear one, and it’s hard with a mantilla.

Love the detail

One of my favorites… very romantic

Erica Koesler veil
I love the lace on this Paloma Blanca veil… it’s just wide enough and not too wide…

Mantilla by David’s Bridal. It’s available in stores, so no price on this one…

This is one of the first pictures I fell in LOVE with… If I end up going with a blusher, I’ll go with one similar to this.

Custom veil by Roxanne… I love the chapel length

I love this veil… her dark hair looks great with the lace.

The ultimate lace mantilla veils are by Homa Bridal, a European designer who incorporates French and Spanish lace into her masterpiece veils.

Homa Style 350 (also known as my dream veil)

This might be the one of the only blonde brides I’ve seen with a mantilla, and I love it!

Katharine McPhee with her Dad!

I loved her veil and I also loved her dress!!

Even Grace Kelly wore mantilla! Her lace was very delicate, and very elegant.

One resource that I’ve found with a great selection and reasonable prices is Dori Anne Veils. She carries Toni Federici, Erica Koesler, Susan Hoxie, and many more.

What kind of veil will you be wearing? Anyone else feel like the veil can represent a snippet of your personality and overall sense of style?

That Paloma Blanca one is my dress!! I just ordered it last week :)

Was considering the matching veil… but it was $385! :(

So I’m going to order a regular veil (perhaps ribbon edged)

i actually wasn’t planning on wearing a veil, because i really wasn’t feeling having 27 layers of tulle sticking out of my head. BUT, you’ve inspired me! i really love those - all of them. the second and fourth are my favorites. thanks for the inspiration!

I love love love mantillas!! I hope to get one similar to Katharine McPhee’s, but I don’t know if I’d like it that long (I also can’t tell from the pictures if the lace goes allll the way down).

It’s just hard to get one for a good (read: <$100) price.

I love Mantilla veils. I plan on wearing one too. They are so romantic, feminine, and carry such a beautiful history. I can’t wait to find mine!

i definitely feel as if the veil is an expression of my personality and style….thats why choosing one was sooo difficult for me.

i was dead set on the elegantly different of birdcage veil with a beautiful feather fascinator, but when my dress came in, i didnt feel as if the birdcage really complimented the dress the best.

i ended up with a 42″, single tier, cut edge veil in one of the widest widths: 108″. which surprised me, but it looks great with my dress AND my feather fascinator. ;)

I’m wearing my mother’s mantilla from Priscilla of Boston, circa 1971. I’m most definitely removing it from the once-fashionable fez-type hat thing that it is attached to, but still. That’s my major criteria for a dress, too.

mmm… mantillas! I originally was dead set on one too! The Erica Koesler one is beautiful and (scarily) not as crazy expensive as other ones i’ve seen. As for the blusher, you can’t really have one on the mantilla because that’s not part of the style. The Grace Kelly and other pic you showed are actually drop veils… also a pretty choice!

I have the paloma blanca dress and the veil but i am really not sure whether to go with the mantila or not. As much as i try it on, and then compare it with the other kinds I just cannot decide. The only thing that is swaying me is that its different. You rarely see a bride wearing one these days and I like different. I have a blusher that was made seperately to clip on but it really doesnt go. I think with a mantila you have to go with the whole look and forget the blusher.

I love the mantilla and I’m definitely considering it as well.. its so whimsical and romantic… enchanting really!

i plan on having two. for our first ceremony i’m going to go with a simple drop veil and for the second more formal one a mantilla.

These photos are luscious. I love the mantilla, but since I have to be veiled for the Jewish part of our ceremony, I’m afraid it’s out. ;-( I’m thinking of going with a drop veil.

A veil (or lack thereof!!!) is DEFINITELY a statement about the bride’s personality. Think about it; how often, outside of weddings, do you see women in veils? Stick something tulle-y on your head and you’ve got an instant-bridal-look.

The mantilla veils are all gorgeous, but I don’t want to have all that stuff on my back (I’m designing my dress with a really intricate back so I give my guests something interesting to look at, lol). I’m going with a birdcage veil - enough of a veil to appease my fiance (I was original adamantly against veils), but flirty and fun and vintage-y enough to go with my personality!

I had a post about this earlier - buy a mantilla veil, and pull it forward. That’s what catherine mcphee and grace kelly did! Or, just order a drop veil, which is what I did.

@Miss Shortcake: I know, I’ve thought about that as well. The only problem is I really like the way the lace looks against my hair. We’ll see.
@kelly: how sweet!

I wore a mantilla veil, and it was definitely very “me”. Personally, I absolutely loved it and every time I look at my wedding pictures I get really happy looking at my veil. Yeah, I’m a dork.:)

MissRuffles says:

I was lucky enough to have an antique Belgian lace chapel-length veil from my husband’s grandmother. The lace edge wasn’t so pronounced to call it a mantilla IMO.

I considered pulling it forward for a blusher (you can laugh at the pics here: http://9ahchick.googlepages.com/fashion) but ended up pinning it to the back of my head.

looved it!

I ordered my mantilla from Etsy seller Honeycombveils. I LOVE it, and she was amazing to work with!

My grandmother wore a mantilla veil on her wedding day during the Great Depression. Apparently it is beautiful. However, she died this past winter, and we aren’t sure where the veil ended up….I want nothing more than to wear it on my wedding day:-(. I hope you find a good one!

I am a 2-veil bride and my 2nd veil is the mantilla, with blusher. I got it from weddingveil.com, using this lace: http://www.weddingveil.com/veils2/catalog.php?category=2j17

I think it is the 26/30″ length, so it hits mid-back and mid-boob.

My wedding is Sunday and I still haven’t decided whether I will use it or not. My first veil is plain but really poofy, which I am partial to, while this one most lays flat but I love the lace! If I don’t use the mantilla, I am looking to recoup the cost, and would like to sell it for what I paid, minus shipping and tax. If I do use it, I would sell it at a 10% discount, still no shipping or tax.

If anyone is interested, especially Miss Champagne, let me know! (Wouldn’t be able to ship it until Sept 8.)

I fell in love with a $600 mantilla veil… so much so that I almost bought it despite the price tag. *gulp* But luckily I came to my senses and I contacted Kathy at http://www.obridal.com and she was able to make something nearly identical for me– cathedral length, lightly beaded lace for about $200. I sent her pictures of my dress, and she replied with several pictures of different laces that she thought might match, which was great. I just got my veil from her a couple weeks ago and she did a fabulous job. I know others have recommended her here, and I second their praises!

I too love the Mantilla! But once I tried one on with my dress- it didn’t really go… weird. But I love all images of them… so I loved your post :)

The mantilla veil at David’s Bridal is $200. I knot only purchased my dress there, but the also the veil. My sister (MOH), friend (BM) and I actually fell in love with the veil before the dress. I am a very modern girl, but the veil softens everything it touches. It is an absolute dream!!!

I just got married on September 6. I too fell in love with the mantilla veil! I actually had a fingertip veil hand made at a bridal shop in NJ. It cost me $125. It was so beautiful and the lace matched the dress. I can share a few pictures if you contact me. I do recommend finding someone that can match the lace with the dress if possible.
