The Donkeys Are in the Mile High City

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) kicked off here in the Mile High City last night (that reminds me, I need to register to vote in Colorado)!

Both Mr. Cookie and myself work in Downtown Denver, and besides the intense security and minor traffic congestion, life is pretty much normal. Although, I am not going to lie. Mr. Cookie and I went to a Rockies game over the weekend and it was a little eerie to see the multitude of police with semi-automatics and guard dogs walking around downtown.

When planning for our wedding, Mr. Cookie and I made absolutely sure that we did not plan our wedding even close to the DNC. But I did talk to a bride at a Bee Happy Hour a little while ago who is having her wedding this weekend, and was having a heck of a time finding hotel rooms for her guests. With that, Mr. Cookie’s best man works as a Front Desk Manager in Downtown Minneapolis/St. Paul and is gearing-up for the Republic National Convention next week, and he says it’s crazy with members of media already arriving.

I have my last fitting tonight, and I am leaving an hour early from work because the bridal salon is close to the Pepsi Center. Finger crossed that I survive traffic!

Did or are you planning your wedding close to a major national event? What kind of challenges did you have to overcome?

Yes, we planned our wedding right around the time of the US Olympic Track and Field trials in our town in June. Luckily, we planned way ahead so we were able to get a big block of hotel rooms, and reserved our vendors, etc. without problems. We were also happy that the town had been spruced up for all of our OOT guests!

Our wedding is in Huntington Beach, CA and is on the start of the US Open of Surfing so our guests will not be getting any special deals on hotel rooms. We had no idea but at least they will have plenty of stuff to do and see.

Our wedding is the same weekend as the Annapolis Boat Show. The wedding is in October and when I called in February to book rooms, every hotel in Annapolis was almost fully booked!

My sister’s wedding was this last weekend in Colorado Springs and most of our guests were flying into Denver. We didn’t even begin to take the DNC Convention into account until just a few weeks ago…

The only issues we had were finding rental cars (affordable ones at first, ANY later on) and when a family member had an airline malfunction, the airlines used the convention as an excuse why they couldn’t put him up for the night or rent him a car to get him through the last leg of his (originally scheduled) trip…

Hi, I recently: July 17th got married at Ten Mile. I also used IN as my photographers (that is how I found you). I just wanted to tell you that Mark and Michele were amazing. I also wanted to say that my wedding cake, by Katie, was incredible. The guest raved over the taste and the cake itself looked beautiful. I am sure yours will be perfect. No worries with the food at Ten Mile….most said it was the best wedding food they have ever had. Just wanted to give you some good new and wish you a wonderful day! Molly J

I live in Denver, too, and yesterday we went downtown and seriously felt like it was some sort of war zone. Security barrier everywhere, motorcades zipping around the downtown blocks-it’s nuts! I hope you’re able to get where you need to go!

…this sounds like New York every day, haha. I, luckily, did not have to deal with much of anything on my wedding day except the pounding rain. Good thinking ahead about the DNC!

I tried to get into Illegal Pete’s for lunch on 16th St. and thought of you as a woman yelled “Register to vote, or you’ll be left out!”
