About Mrs. Avocado

Photographer = Friendor

August 27th, 2008 @ 5:19 pm by Mrs. Avocado

Before I show you our beyond fabulous engagement photos, I want to introduce you to our photographer, Kelli Nicole.

First I will tell you a sad story. I found a photographer I loved. He takes pictures that make me want to cry (that’s how pretty they are). He was available, he was affordable, he would fly across the country for us. I mailed him a contract and a check, and then he called to tell me that he hadn’t realized we’d changed our date, and that a couple had booked him just a week before. I cried.

Then I was reading through some friend’s blogs. My freshman roomate Kelli’s blog came up, with a particularly beautiful shoot featuring a gorgeous family. I was startled. Could this be the same girl I roomed with 4 years ago? The pictures she was putting up looked nothing like I remembered her creating back in the day. Would I make a Friendor out of this girl? Could we reconnect once again?

Cue the wavy music that cheesy sitcoms use. And the fuzzy edged effect.

We partied it up at the Wilkinson center.

Kelli let me take cheesy portraits of her before we met up with our dates for a freshman dance. (Kelli, do you remember these? Why was I the one behind the camera for this?)

She fell down and dropped a box of her stuff while moving. She didn’t hate me for grabbing my camera to take a picture instead of helping her up.

She frequently fell asleep in this very position. This is not staged my friends.

End scene. Back to the present.I called her up, and I was honest. I was nervous about booking her. Some might say I was brutally honest. Kelli knows me well enough to know what a photography blog stalker I am, and she had spent time admiring the work of “the one who was not meant to be” as much as I had. She didn’t have very much wedding experience, but she is interning for The Image is Found this summer (and stealing all of their amazing photography secrets to use for our wedding, hee hee hee!) She told me her prices, and I learned that I would save not hundreds, but thousands of dollars. I remembered my mantra concerning using personal resources. I said yes.

Miss Avocado is currently patting herself on the back for a job well done. Pat pat pat.

You’ve seen the proposal shots, but that was nothing. Kelli dropped a bomb in the name of 1000+ engagement photos in my lap this week. Yes, 1000 photos. Friendors rock.

Post proposal. Friends for life. Let’s credit Mr. Avocado for this gorgeous shot, shall we?

Have you been surprised by the creative genius of any of your Friendors?

that’s awesome! it’s so great to work with someone you know you can trust 100%! one of our friends did our informal wedding videos for us, which were so professional…and he really captured all the emotion perfectly! i think friends are able to do such a perfect job sometimes, because they know you better :-)

Yes I have been pleasantly surprised. A similar story, my friend and I met in undergrad and she recently made wedding invitations and programs for her own wedding, her cousins wedding- and she has been perfecting her calligraphy styles. So when she found out I was getting married she ‘happened’ to show me her creative crafty work on her earlier projects that I don’t mind in the least that she do my invitations! And my Fiance loved her craftiness too! And on top of that– I don’t know if this counts, but my uncle is a wedding photographer (by chance- he went to undergrad as a photog major and flash forward fifteen years has his PhD in analytical chemistry- but he loves photography so much he does wedding photography on the side!) So he is shooting my wedding too. But that is the great thing about having friends partake in the meaningful things of your life, I think it adds some personalness when others pouur their love and energy into something they know means so much to you. Because they try to ‘do a little extra’ because it’s you. Right? Well, I’d like to think so!

Yes, we have two friends who are awesome amateur photogs and they will be photographing our wedding. They both do really amazing work, plus since we’ll have two people it will double the chances of getting some great shots, and it will allow them each to take breaks and enjoy the day, as well. We are planning a destination wedding and finding vendors from afar can be tough, so entrusting our photography to two friends really is helpful. As payment, we are paying for their travel and accomodation, which is saving us money, too. Yay for friendors! Now if only I had a friend who was great at hair and makeup…

We’ll be having our day-after photos taken by my cousin, who is so naturally talented just like your friend. It makes a huge difference if the photog can make you relaxed and yourself…

can’t wait to see your photos:) Seems like a perfect fit!

I’ll admit it, I cheated. I checked out Kelli’s blog and got a sneak peak at your e-pics. They’re fabulous, and you two look HOT! Can’t wait to see what you show us!!

My friend, who is an exhibit designer, designed my invitations. I was amazed! They were better than the Crane’s I had been looking at.
