Snow in August!

August 28th, 2008 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Caramel

A few weeks ago, Mr. Caramel, my parents, my sister and I went on a cruise to Alaska! We took the Sapphire Princess cruise and it was quite an adventure! We saw lots of honeymooners there and I was able to take many pictures and pick up some tips for any future cruise honeymooners. We went on this cruise partially because my dad used to live in Alaska for a while, and also to pre-celebrate our one year anniversary which is coming up in a couple months! Eek!

I highly recommend the Princess Cruise lines - we were told it was one of the better cruise ships. For a vacation with the family it was a bit over the top. BUT, for a honeymoon, I think it would be quite nice, especially coming back from a hectic wedding day. You’ll be eating, eating, eating nonstop. That would be fantastic after dieting forever for your big day! :)

Here are some amazing extra activities that I thought were very “once in a lifetime.” The activities were VERY pricey, about $200 per excursion, but we figured we’d never participate in activities like this again!

We did some dog sledding on actual glaciers!

I’m sure there are a lot of dog lovers out there, and if you love dogs, you would LOVE doing this! We made sure to pet each dog and give them all love equally because they got really jealous if we didn’t. :)

Here’s the dog camp! I couldn’t believe where we were… surrounded by absolutely nothing but glaciers, pure white snow and Alaskan mountains.

Here are pictures of the glacier helicopter ride:

Just imagine relaxing in your snow boots in Alaska, eating unlimited pizza and burgers by the pool!

If you’re having a summer wedding but you want some cold weather to snuggle in with your new honey, Alaska can be super romantic!

Think about it… (I took this picture of Mr. Caramel looking into the beautiful ocean)

Have any of you had good/bad experiences with cruises?

FI and I went on an Alaskan cruise a few summers ago. It was AMAZING!! A cruise would be a wonderful honeymoon because everything is taken care of for you and all you have to do is relax! If you get restless, you can always participate in shore excursions. I’ve recently completed my 50 state tour, and out of all of them, I have to say AK is my favorite!

Awww, I LOVE Huskies!!! We have a one year old Siberian Husky named Stella and she has so much personality! Even though we live in Florida she still has the sled dog instinct; the second the harness goes on for a walk she’s dragging you down the street! Very cool post!

Mrs Caramel I’m so glad you posted this! DH and I are hoping to take a cruise to Alaska for our 1 year anniversary and your post solidified it for me!

Lovely pics!

I know now that I’m gonna have to save up for the dog sled experience!

We just got back from our Alaskan cruise a few weeks ago, too. We were on Holland America’s Westerdam and had a GREAT time. More fun I think than our honeymoon even.

We also LOVE dogs so we did the dogsledding trip. However, we’re afraid of tiny planes and helicopters given their much higher crash risk so we did a dry land dogsledding trip in Juneau. The dogs were strapped to a golf cart-like vehicle. It sounds really ghetto but it was a lot of fun. I loved how the dogs went NUTS as people approached to get on for sledding - they were so excited to pull that they’d start jumping in their harnesses.

We went on a Disney cruise once. Your alaskan cruise sounds better.

The shows they had at night were good, but otherwise, I just slept most of the time because the majority of the activities I was allowed to do (I was under 18) were pretty lame. My parents barely did anything at all. We also didn’t like that our dinner time was so late. It was either 7 or 8, but we were always starving by then.

There wasn’t anything particularly fun to do on the beaches and the excursions were all pretty expensive. I went on one and it was just a site seeing tour. The best part was the strawberry banana smoothies.

I think it would have been much more fun if I was older and had someone to hang out with besides my parents.

My husband and I went on an Alaskan cruise with Princess for our 1st anniversary, too! It was super relaxing. The only down-side was that we felt like the cruise was geared toward older folks. I don’t know if it’s because Princess is more expensive, so fewer young couples can afford it (as opposed to Royal Caribbean) or if it’s because Alaska attracts the older crowd? There were only a handful of young couples there. Lots of families with teenage kids and TONS of the over-40 set.

We went on the Sapphire Princess to the Mexican Riviera and it’s a nice ship! I like the freestyle dining option. My parents want to go on an Alaskan cruise very badly and we plan on taking them in the next year or so. How was coordinating the flights to get to and from the departure port?

Ooh, we leave for Alaska on Sunday, and your pics were a fabulous teaser. Thanks!!!

(Also, have been cruising 2x, though to warmer climes. And *loved* it, which I totally didn’t expect! There’s something for everyone!)

I’ve been cruising TONS… we just got back from a cruise on the Caribbean Princess to the Eastern Caribbean a week ago. Our honeymoon is also a cruise on the Pacific Princess to Hawaii and Tahiti. I definitely want to do Alaska at some point. It seems gorgeous!
