Four Eyed No More!

Four Eyed No More! : wedding vail Glasses08

In preparation for our wedding in February, there are a few non-traditional things that have been on my list to evaluate. Sure, I’d like to get in better shape, and I’ll be taking care of my skin, but I’d also like to get rid of something that has haunted me since I was a kid—my glasses! I’ve had to wear glasses or contacts since I was very young, and to be honest, it was the long hours at my eye doctor’s office as a kid that sparked my interest in the profession.

My journey with contact lenses started in the fourth grade. I spent the majority of my free time in the dance studio, and glasses were completely in the way. From that day forward, I completely relied on contacts and pretty much refused to wear glasses. But in the past few years, I’ve paid for my stubborn streak. My eyes are so dry now, and they burn like hell when I take out my contacts.

In about two weeks, this will all change.

I’m getting LASIK, and the day can’t come fast enough! For about a month now I’ve had to wear my glasses and it’s completely made me appreciate how glasses can change your look.

I’ll admit that it’s not entirely our wedding that is pressuring me into getting LASIK. It’s more about my desire to get out of the nasty habit of contact lens overwear. I’ll be the first to admit that in the past, I’ve worn contact lenses too much. Contacts were depriving my eyes of oxygen, which can lead to scarring and complications, so I made some changes. It’s also one of the most frequent reasons as to why contact lenses are uncomfortable, and as many of us know, annoying contacts can be a royal pain and can have the ability to easily ruin your day.

Prior to my LASIK consideration, I actually thought about wearing a pair of colored contacts on our wedding day (Insert gasp here). “But Miss Champagne, you mean you want to look like someone else on your wedding day?”

No, no. Not crazy colored contacts, but contacts that subtly accent my natural eye color like these would:

I’m thinking of maybe wearing the “Whiteout” pair to match our winter wedding theme.

Okay, not really, but I do have naturally dark brown eyes, and the Acuvue2 “Honey” color brightens my natural eye color just a bit and I really love the way they look with a smoky eye makeup application.

I should also say that I do think glasses are adorable, and if it really fits your personality they can look so good on your wedding day. Miss Candy Corn posted a while ago about how she’ll be rockin’ the frames, and I actually thought twice about my decision to go forward with the LASIK when I saw how good glasses looked on other brides. I weighed my options, and I figured I’d go for it! So in about two weeks, I’ll be glasses/contact lens freeeee!

What are the changes you’ve made that will improve your daily life before the big day? Have you had LASIK, or if not, are you considering it?

LASIK it the best. thing. ever. Seriously. I joke with FI that if it were between having a wedding and having LASIK, I would get the LASIK (note I said having a wedding, not getting married :) ) I hope you will love it as much as I do. Good luck!

It was actually a poster at an eye doctor’s office that convinced me to get contacts. It was a bride on her wedding day and showed her in glasses. I was only about 15, but it still resonated with me.

Contacts are not comfortable for me during the workday (too much computer time), but before the weddign I still made sure to wear my contacts 4 days a week so that I looked like ‘me’ :)

I do about 60/40 glasses/contacts now, and I think it’s a good mix for me. I wouldn’t get lasik because i actually like how I look in glasses. :)

I’ve considered LASIK - so you’ll have to tell me how it goes! However, I may just have to have fake lenses put in my Chanels - cause I love my glasses so much!

I really want to get Lasik! I can’t wait to hear how your experience goes. I know quite a few people that have had it done and they couldn’t be happier!

I been wearing glasses/contacts since the 6th grade and I would love to get LASIK. I have some stylish frames, but a milder prescription would definitely make them look better!

i got Lasik almost 10 years ago and have never regretted it. The best thing ever was waking up the next morning and seeing the numbers on the alarm clock without my glasses. Make sure you are a good candidate and get lots of referrals but it’s totally worth it.

I’m also very interested to hear how it goes! I’ve worn contacts since I was 13 and have been noticing that they aren’t as comfortable as they used to be…but I’m totally scared of getting Lasik…a review by an eye-doc will be super helpful!

You look super hot with glasses Miss C! But I’m really excited to hear about your lasik…I’m a contact wearer myself and really haven’t had problems with them, so I’m not looking to go under the knife (laser, rather) any time soon, but I’m always considering it so I love to hear of people’s stories.

I am sooooooo happy I had lasik done! I wish I had done it years ago. I had the bladeless procedure done early in the afternoon, slept until the next morning (courtesy of the Ambien they gave me) and had perfect vision to drive myself to the follow-up appointment.

The only problem I experienced was trying so hard to break myself of the habit of reaching for my glasses on the nightstand in the morning! :)

I had LASIK 6 months ago and 3 months before our wedding. My parents paid for it and my husband jokes it’s the best wedding present we got! The experience was a little scary but nothing a strong woman can’t handle. You’ll be so pleased with the results. Good luck!

I’m also guilty of the over-wearing of contacts. I really hate my glasses…I guess it’s to do with being teased at school so much. Plus I really think I look better without them! However I’ve got totally lazy now and hardly ever wear my contacts! Let’s hope my eyes can cope on The Day!

Oh no, you just made me feel so bad! I’m a contact lens overwearer and sleeper inner. I don’t know if those are the technical terms but you get the idea. I’ve tried so hard to change but it is just habit now. I guess maybe I need to consider LASIK for myself?

I got LASIK two months ago for the same exact reasons you mentioned! I was a contact over-wearer and have had lots of complications because of it. LASIK has been BEYOND AWESOME! I see 20/16 now and am very excited that contacts won’t hinder me on my wedding day as I am a crying, blubbering mess! Good luck!

@Miss Pomegranate: I love my Chanels too!
@Mrs. Penguin: well thanks! I NEVER use to wear glasses because they minify my eyes and distort my face- it’s been weird these past few weeks to see myself in them!
@Katharine: @Miss Avocado: contact lens overwear is SUCH a hard habit to break. Avo- your contacts better be approved for overnight wear… if they’re not, Tiramisu and I will come to get you!!

It was the best decision I’ve ever made. I feel quite strongly that LASIK should be on the National Health Service here in the UK. It has made such a big difference because I was quite shortsighted (minus 5) and I would recommend it to every contact lense wearer!

I had lasik back in 2003 and it was the best decision ever! My mom had it done while I was in college, and just a couple of weeks ago my brother got it done too! We now are a 20/20 family! :) It’s awesome to not have glasses or contacts- people that naturally don’t have to don’t realize how lucky they are! Good luck and I know you will LOVE it!

I have to agree with everyone else - LASIK is fabulous! I had it done about 6 months ago after I over-wore my contacts to the point of having an allergic reaction to them. My doctor told me I couldn’t wear them anymore, so I got LASIK. I was actually a little relieved to be forbidden to wear contacts - I needed an excuse for LASIK. My contacts were sooo painful because of how dry my eyes were. I’ll be honest, though, I do miss my glasses a little bit. They were cute, and it was a cute look every once in awhile. But still, LASIK is amazing! I’m so glad I had it. Good luck with yours. It’s a super fast procedure, and it’s so much fun to see the results.

I just celebrated my one year anniversary of my PRK eye surgery - similar to Lasik but they laser directly onto the eye rather than cut a flap (for those with thin corneas, among other reasons).

It was the BEST MONEY I’VE EVER EVER SPENT!! I truly feel like a new woman! You will love it.
