Fancy Cake Hats

August 29th, 2008 @ 1:01 pm by Mrs. Champagne

If there’s one accessory or detail we haven’t really thought about, it’s probably the cake topper. I guess we never considered having one until I saw how much variation in toppers there are these days. From clay custom models to adorable little birds, there really is a style for every couple.

We’ll start with the classic monogram and script cake toppers:

Monogram topper from The Flirty Bride

champ1

This topper says “double happiness”, and I love it!

champ2

This one is so basic, but I really love the monogram look.

champ3

Sport themed toppers:

Champ and I are both big sports fans, and we can usually be found on the golf course on the weekend. We’re not great, but we love it! Toppers come in so many sports themes.

I like this one, but I wish the bride had a golf bag, too! (Source)

champ4

This is a fun idea. Do you have a “split household” where the bride roots for one team, while the groom roots for another? You can actually pick the two teams you want! I had to include a picture of the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry cake topper because Champ is from Boston!

champ5

Custom toppers:

Probably the most realistic custom cake toppers I’ve seen are from Thumbprint Kids. Seriously, check out the original photos of the couple compared to the topper.

champ1

These are the custom clay toppers of knottie cassiopa by Corporate Pig.

champ7

Can’t forget about the birds and the bees:

The infamous Ann Wood birds are adorable!

champ8

Here are some classic doves in a cute little dove embrace.

champ9

Lauren Alane makes custom cake toppers as well. I highly recommend Lauren Alane! She is so creative. I love the little glasses on these birds. They’re so cute!

champ10

I love this robot bee cake topper from Etsy seller Builderstudio. He also makes secret agent toppers and a few others. They’re so unique, and Champ always wanted to be a secret agent!

champ11

champ12

More bees ahead! These toppers are created by Etsy seller Miss Bea Haven with a combination of newspaper, wire, Styrofoam, paint, stain, and polyurethane.

champ13

Cultural and same sex figurines:

These can often be used as mix and match pieces if the bride and groom are from two different cultures.

Western themes:

So maybe we’re not your typical country folk, but we’ll be getting married in the west! Maybe a western topper is in order?

Beach weddings:

Whenever we see beach themes, it makes us want to ditch the snow idea. There’s something about the sand and seashells that we just love.

And for the non-traditional couple, how about a few Polaroids to top your cake!

champ21

After seeing all the options out there, it’s definitely going to be a tough choice!

Will your cake wear a fancy hat?

I actually have the doves! It was backordered for months and I was worried I wouldn’t receive it. They are now sitting on my dresser awaiting their duty. I love that they can be used as a piece of art after the wedding.

YES!! Our cake “topper” is this: http://images.entertainmentearth.com/%5CAUTOIMAGES%5CNC32844lg.jpg

It will actually rest on the first tier though, because it is the inspiration for the whole cake…

Out of all of those, I like the last one the best. I am not a huge fan of cake tops that aren’t sugar or flowers.

I know flowers on top are pretty traditional these days, but we went with our variation of that — a succulent (almost-cactus, but really an echeveria) plant topper. (We had a southwest theme with succulents and cactus.) We were very happy with how it all came out. We had just a few more plus green and red cymbidium orchids sprinkled on the other layers. The cake was covered in green buttercream with white chocolate shavings.

I love all the birds that a lot of folks are going with, though!

I didn’t care about the topper one way or the other, and didn’t think we needed one at all, but my fiance really wanted a traditional bride and groom on top of the cake. I thought that would be a little cheesy, so we did some research and found a great, slightly alternative option that still involved a bride and a groom, but in not such a kitschy way:

I love that after the wedding, we can set it on a shelf so that their legs dangle off the edge.

WOW. You just gave me the perfect idea for a present for my hubby. I have never seen anything like thumbprint kids before and they do more than just cake toppers. Thanks so much!

We still have no idea what to do. It’s going to end up being flowers (expensive unless I make one from silk flowers), a big bow (very inexpensive, or a Lego bride and groom (since we love playing Lego Star Wars).

nicole3381- I bought that set also since we are having a winter wedding and I would have loved to have had a Halloween wedding. Too cute! However, I probably won’t use it since my mom frowned on the idea. Please post a pic on the boards with it after you wedding@

I wasn’t even going to do a cake topper (for 1, b/c we’re not having cake) but now I am finding a way to do the polaroid topper! I love that idea!

I have the love-doves! I really hated almost every cake topper I came across, and was ready to just tell the baker to stick some flowers up there and call it a day. Then I saw the doves and fell in love. I think they’re so sweet and elegant, and I can’t wait to display them after the wedding.

Mine is a simple modern topper of a couple embracing. I saw it in a bridal mag a year ago and finally found it in a store.. and on sale!
