I’m not sure how many newlywed couples get to put their vows into practice the first week after they are married, but we turned out to be one of them. That’s right… on day five, I woke up and did not feel so good. In fact, I felt horrible. It wasn’t just one of the bugs you could get from traveling to a foreign country. In addition to tummy problems, I had a full-on fever and the worst body aches I had ever experienced in my life.
To be honest, I think I actually started feeling a little bit funny a couple days before the wedding, but the adrenaline had kept it all away. Once we were finally and truly relaxed, my body seemed to have just crashed.
I like this simple picture, which we took that morning instead of heading out to take scenic sunrise photos. Mr. D gave me a big hug and said to me, don’t worry, I am going to take care of you
.
If there is one tip I can offer to any honeymooner:
PACK SOME BASIC MEDS. In fact, you may as well pack a mini first aid kit. Every destination is different, and you never know how challenging it may be to find what you might need. French Polynesia was particularly difficult. Medicine, even OTC ones like ibuprofen or antihistamines, were available only through pharmacies which all had some weird hours. Many were only open for a couple hours a day, and they were closed on weekends.
My fever was getting worse, and I couldn’t even move. The hotel’s staff was kind but unable to help, so Mr. D ended up going around the resort to different guests to see if they happened to have had any Advil or Tylenol. Luckily, we found a woman who gave us half a pack of aspirin.
The next couple of days, we took it easy. I was usually feeling incredibly ill in the evenings and early mornings, and all I could do was sleep. Mr. D was so sweet though, and suggested that we go lay by the beach, so that we could at least enjoy our beautiful surroundings. It was the perfect idea, and in the occasional moments when I felt better, I was able to immediately jump in the water!
Here I am, completely passed out on the beach… the only person wrapped in a towel!

But it was worth it to lay out by the scenic view of the bungalows and the lagoon…
I usually felt better in the afternoons, after a ton of rest and after the aspirin kicked in! So Mr. D and I still got to enjoy the water
.
You know you are newlyweds when you can have fun even in some fairly unlucky circumstances
.
Up next: We bid farewell to the island of Moorea and head back to Tahiti, and Mr. D starts getting sick too…
