It never occurred to me in my teens that I needed to take care of my face. Sun spots from the sun? Yes. But for the most part, I was relatively acne free and I didn’t exactly have dry or oily skin. Fast forward to now when all I think about when I look in the mirror is how badly I wish I could reverse all the years of lying in the sun without SPF 80 or wishing I wasn’t a “popper.” Ha.
Since our wedding is less than 7 months away, I’ve really been trying to pay attention to my skin. After all, I’m going to be photographed in all kinds of angles, different lighting, etc., and I don’t want to feel self-conscious on our big day. In addition, we want to go some place warm/tropical for our honeymoon, and I don’t want to wear foundation/cover-up while I’m on the beach. It’s not a good look.
I’d show you my face sans make-up, but it’s not cute. And I’m shy and I’m afraid you’ll make fun. But, maybe this visual will help: think of super pale skin. Add some redness and dryness around the cheekbones. Throw in some whopping under-skin blemishes and some scars from 10 years of picking at my face…. and that’s me.
Now, while I won’t dare say I have an acne problem, I will say that I have “issues.” You see, I’m allergic to just about everything. Pollen, most animals (boo!), tons of medicines and unfortunately most facial lotions, soaps and gels. I also live in the desert, which most certainly does not help. I can no longer get a facial or have a relaxing massage and I got a serious “talking to” from my dermatologist when I mentioned that I was still getting them. He said they were counteracting all of the treatments we’d been trying*. Shucks.
So what have I been doing? Well, for starters, I wear foundation with SPF and always wear a hat when I’m outside. I can’t use sunblock since I’m allergic to most brands. Second, I no longer spend money on fancy cleansers from department stores. I use plain ’ole Cetaphil bar soap, with hot hot water. It’s $5 at most grocery stores and lasts me about 2 months.
But here’s where I’m stuck. I don’t have a moisturizer. I can’t seem to find one that doesn’t make things worse for my face. Not even the Cetaphil brand. I’ve used Murad, Paula’s Choice, Chanel, Neutrogena, and the list goes on and on. I’ve even used Creme De La Mer, but without positive results. By the way, I’ve found (and this is just one person’s experience) that La Mer and Nivea Creme are basically the same. The only difference is the consistency of the two cremes. Nivea is quite a bit thicker and takes some time to work into your skin. Oh, and it’s significantly cheaper than La Mer.

Here’s where I need everyone’s help. Do you have know of any great organic products I should try? What has your experience been? I hope I can nip this in the bud before the wedding.
*Dumpling is not a doctor. Repeat. Not a doctor. Please don’t take anything on this post as medical advice of any kind.
I love Lush for natural/organic products. My current skin care regimen is using their Ocean Salt cleanser followed by Imperialis moisturizer. It’s not the cheapest stuff, but it can last for quite awhile so it pays off (for example, I bought my last 1.5 oz pot of moisturizer back in January or February. I’ve used maybe half of it in 7-8 months).
I second Kiehls…I use the sodium oil free PCA moisturizer which is great for sensitive skin!
Miss Dumpling — I am right there with you. I wish I took care of my skin in my teenage years, but luckily, I’m in my mid twenties and I have started a pretty good beauty regimen. As far as products go, I recommend Arbonne. I’ve promoted it here a few times in response to some other bees and I’m not sure if they tried it, but it is, hands down, the best product I’ve ever used. And it is all organic. Check out there website: http://www.arbonne.com. I use the anti-aging line and I’ve seen dramatic results in my very fine lines and some of those sun spots you’ve talked about. I’m sure there is an Arbonne consultant in your area, and you may want to host a party so you can get your pre-wedding beauty products for free! Please let me know if you use it!!
This is also not organic, but what about Pond’s cold cream? As Miss Shortcake raved, there are only 7 ingredients if you get the original kind.
I second MsAnge’s suggestion of LUSH. Everything they make is organic, and they’re also good at giving samples. I also love Imperialis!
I use Aveda’s skincare products, and have never had success with anything else. Well, to be honest, I only use their moisturizer and that’s good enough. Like you, I wash my face with Cetaphil, and like you, my skin is very sensitive. At the slightest hint of irritation, my eyelids slough off in a nasty dry mess. Seriously. Aveda’s moisturizer is the only thing that has worked for me, and it works like a charm!
Be careful with Philosophy - like you, I’ve got very sensitive skin and I’m allergic to a lot (but not Neutrogena - that’s all that will work), and their Hope in a Jar formula was too strong for me.
I haven’t tried Aveda’s skin products, but their shampoos are one of the only kinds that don’t make my scalp break out in a rash, so their moisturizer might be worth a shot. I think you can get a sample size at most stores.
Marisa, I get the nasty dry eyelids too - soooo gross. I got some prescription drops to use when they flare up, and that helps.
Not organic.. but, I use all Philosophy products.. I have sensitive skin (I too was a Cetaphil girl) - they have all kinds of products as Tammi mentioned above.. Hope in a Jar is good, they make a dry, sensitive skin kind as well - however I use original Hope in a Jar. They also make one now with an SPF in it - not sure what you’re allergic to - but take a look. I buy mine at Nordstrom.
Hi Miss Dumpling! Origins carries a USDA organic line. You should also check out your local organic foods store for skincare products but remember to read the labels for ingredients because some products are advertised to be “organic” but consists of mostly lab created material. There is also another USDA organic skincare line from Terressentials http://www.terressentials.com/fffacialcare.html that is supposed to be pretty fantastic. Good luck!
I have rosacea and just about everything aggravates my skin. My derm suggested this. CeraVe, the lotion, not the cream. It is intended as a body lotion, but I use it on my face. I have found it in most drug stores. HTH!
I also use Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar with their Makeup Optional regimen. It has done wonders for my skin! But it does have hydroxy acids in it, which may be irritating to your sensitive skin. It sounds like your derm is pretty strict - doesn’t she have a suggestion for you?
I have the same allergies as you do and then some, and I us Aveeno products. It might be worth the skin text. Typically drugstores will have a tester bottle, so you could put some on the inside of your arm and walk around the store shopping for a while to see if you react. I can’t get facials anymore because of the various cremes they use.
I agree with LoriJ, give CeraVe a try. It was developed by dermatologists for people with dry, very sensitive skin. It is the only thing that I can use on my allergic rashy skin. Also, consider seeing a dermatologist because you have plenty of time to get a regimen going with them. Good luck with your quest.
My friend with excema and is allergic to virtually everything recommends aveeno.
like you I use cetaphil as my face wash and oil of olay to moisturize both day and night. it’s been working well for me so far especially when i get really dry.
I use MD Skincare’s Hydra-Pure oil free moisturizer. MD Skincare also makes a non- oil free kind as well. It’s not organic, though. And it’s a bit pricey — I think around $80-90 for 1 oz.
Miss Dumpling! I can relate. I too use Cetaphil. When I want to gently exfoliate I add a bit of baking soda to the cleanser. I do however where a sunblock every day on top of that in foundation. I use Peter Thomas Roth Ultra light SPF. My skin is ultra sensitive and I have used this now for over 3 years with excellent results.
I am super allergic to everything too! Almost anything meant for your skin is a no-go for me- I breakout or get a rash. I don’t have any suggestions for organic stuff but I thought I would mention the RX stuff I use for you to ask your derm about if the other suggestions don’t work out. I am not a doctor! I use tazorac gel for old acne scars, which can make my skin dry, so I was also prescribed ellidel (I think it’s usually an excema cream). The ellidel is a great moisturizer and best of all I don’t have any kind of undesirable reaction from using it.
I have pretty sensitive skin too and clinique has always been good to my skin. The Dramatically Different moisturizer is one of my favorites. For sunscreen, try Neutrogena’s Sensitive Skin - it only has zinc oxide, it doesnt have any chemical sunscreens.
Do you ever read Paula Begoun’s website? You mentioned you’ve tried Paula’s Choice. I find her advice to often be quite good, even if I don’t use her products. From her advice, I started using Olay Regenerist Serum (fragrance free). The serum is light, which I find better on my face than lotions and creams (moisturizing but without causing break outs).
emerge skin care… this is AMAZING –
Any particular reason you use hot, hot water? I’ve heard from multiple dermatologists that hot isn’t so good for the skin. I’d be interested to know if you’d heard differently and have a new secret!
As for moisturizers, I’ve heard good things about Juice Beauty. I’m currently using Clinique’s antioxidant moisturizer, and I dig it. Got a sample and might buy another bottle!
I’m allergic to lots of things too (scents, creams, foods, air, etc.) the only sunscreen that my skin and my perfume allergies can handle is Banana Boat’s oil-free, everything-free, lotion or spray, they’re both awesome.
First of all Miss Dumpling, I think I speak for everone when it say, NO ONE here would make fun of anyone else so don’t be silly thinking that for even a nano second.
As far as products go; Burt’s Bees makes a variety of skin care products that are all natural and the prices won’t leaving you broke.
I have to second the CeraVe cleanser and
lotion in the pump container. My derm
recommended it for my very sensitive dry patchy
skin. It works great for me. Best of all it’s very low
cost.
Today was my deadline to stop picking my face before the wedding. I will NOT do it. Will not will not.
For those red marks/scars from popping I use full strength vitamin E every night. I buy the capsules at the grocery store and prick them open and put them on night after night, which helps the scar heal faster, and helps the red fade away like magic.
I have rosacea, adult acne, and sensitive skin. I have used Clinique for years, but not the Dramatically Different moisturizer — never liked it and I’ve heard of others breaking out from it as well. Their Moisture Surge is nice, though, and they now have a line of “redness reducing”, urgent relief creams and such that seem good. Not organic, though.
Also,I had a couple of facials before my wedding by an aesthetician who swears by Bioelements. I tolerated the facials well (especially after I stopped using Retin A), and they make a Stress Solution that “smoothes, calms, and reduces skin sensitivity” — it feels like heaven going on! One last thing — I would be careful with Origins; it seems pretty harsh to me. I have reacted to some of it, and I know others who have too. Good luck!
I didn’t have luck with Juice Beauty (I think because of an allergy to one of the fruits…it makes me sick to eat it but I didn’t think it would affect my skin) but lots of people swear by it. You can order it on their website or go to Sephora if like me you need to hold and read the bottles to decide what you want
Sometimes hydrocortisone cream helps reduce the big painful pimples. I put it on before bed.
I’m right there with you. My skin goes nuts regularly, but I found eliminating corn syrup from my diet made it clear up like a dream! And for moisturing my annoying oily-but-flakey skin I’ve found I can use eye creams all over my face but their matching moistureizers make me break out. Go figure? I think since eye creams are more suited for delicate skin it works? Kiss my Face Organics, Olay’s and Kiel’s products work this way for me.
This sounds crazy but you know those little kiosk carts at the mall? Well a few years ago one of those cart wranglers reeled me in and I bought a few of the products he was selling. It is a line called Premier Dead Sea. I bought the facial scrub and the moisturizer. My mother bought the night and morning eye creams. They started to work almost instantly. My pores are visibly smaller, my skin is dewy and my breakouts have been minimal. I have very oily skin too and these products keep that down to a minimum.
I can’t talk enough about how amazing these skin products are. They are completely all natural and hypoallergenic. Its all about the dead sea salt and the natural minerals found in the salt. This stuff is pricey though so I buy it off of eBay. Here is the link to the USA website:
http://www.premierdeadsea.com/Cleansers_Toners_s/34.htm
http://www.premierdeadsea.com/Day_Care_s/30.htm (these are the light moisturizers for day)
have you tried jojoba oil?
it’s a great moisturizer and not greasy feeling.
I use olive oil for facial moisturizer. Sounds crazy, but it is a natural inflammatory. It is the only thing (besides cold cream, which I use for occasional makeup removal) that doesn’t make my super sensitive skin red and itchy. I put it on, rub it in, and then gently wash it off with a HOT washcloth. Also, putting oil on your face sounds like it might make acne worse, but actually helps your face to not under or over produce oil (just like how using shampoo too much can strip your hair of oils and inhibit natural oil production, making hair dry).
Uh…I meant anti-inflammatory, not “natural inflammatory.” That wouldn’t be good!
I like the products from Avalon organics: http://www.avalonorganics.com/?id=82
We use the lavender hand and body lotion and I put a bit on my face when the skin dries up, it works great for me.
But like someone said above you should definitely read the ingredients in the back, and probably test any cream on the inside of your elbow and see if there is any reaction within 24h.
I like kiss my face, avalon organics and JASON. Since I went natural I have much less issue with my dry flakey skin! I can’t rave enough. I also use everyday minerals for makeup and that has helped.
Aveda or Origins are both dedicated to all Organic products- and their stuff is great!
Hi Dumpling! I hope you’ll soon find that the bees here don’t sting. Many of us can probably relate to the description of your skin “issues”. I know I do.
Olive oil really is good. Another beautiful moisturiser is coconut oil. Find a pure, organic brand, and use a clean spoon to flake a little of the solid oil off each time. Coconut oil melts at body temperature, so it will turn to a clear liquid when you touch it. Mix a little fresh aloe vera pulp with the oil for a less greasy and even more soothing mixture.
Coconut oil is antifungul and antibacterial, so it’s perfect for nourishing and cleansing our skin. I use it in the shower, actually, so that I can rinse off excess residue before patting my face dry.
I second (and third) Philosophy’s hope in a jar… It has made my sensitive skin so much clearer and better looking. I have also found some success with Garnier anti-sun damage with spf 28 for day.
try mychelle products..you can get them at whole foods or natural food stores..her products are great..and effective!
Cetaphil creme. In a tub. It’s fabulous. Try it. You’ll never go back. And this is coming from someone who is “allergic to the world”!
@BabySmudge: I’m sure your derm talked to you about the risks with Elidel before prescribing it, but just in case I thought I’d mention it. Since 2006, the FDA requires Elidel to carry the black warning, which warns that it may increase the risk of cancer. It was enough to make me stop using it after my derm prescribed it for my excema.
Be Fine products might work for you, I don’t know if they’re organic, but they do use food, so you might find something that you’re not allergic to, as the ingredients are pretty straight forward. The products can be found at CVS.
http://www.befine.com/
This post really intrigued me, I’m a skin care professional and have my own Skin Care studio. With many of my clients I see very sensitive and reactive to product skin. I’m interested in the treatments your dermatologist have you on. You’re correct when you say you need natural ingredients, there is a great line called Tuel based out of The Bay Area in California. Everything is fragrance free, natural essential oils , basically great food for your skin! You basically get a skin care kit for your skin type which includes two cleansers and hydrating serum and a sunscreen. I encourage all brides to take care of their skin! I applaud that you care! Good luck and please don’t hesitate to ask questions if you need to!
I recommend Evan Healy’s skincare, hands down. I am super picky about things being ALL natural and mostly organic (not just a regular line with a few organic ingredients thrown in like 70% of products are…fakers!
Even though I don’t have extremely sensitive skin, many people with sensitive skin have turned to organic products b/c they are so pure and non-irritating. I recommend the blue lavender line of products for sensitive skin, or perhaps the tea tree oil for blemished skin. You can get more information at evanhealy.com, and it’s sold in stores here in CA so hopefully in NV too. Best wishes!
Try Avene products. I used to get them at CVS, but now they aren’t sold there anymore.
The website has locations or you can ask your physican/dermo. http://www.aveneusa.com
Jurlique is 100% organic and biodynamic, their products are WONDERFUL!! I also have incredibly sensitive skin that breaks out in rashes and zits, and their sunscreen (through pricey) is the only one I can use and wear all day long without a reaction. Also, I love the JASON tea tree cleansing soap (organic), but I haven’t tried that line’s moisturizers. Definitely give Jurlique a shot - at least get some free samples to try it out - Whole Foods carries the line, or you can order from their website.
Thanks ladies! Your suggestions are helpful. Too bad I can’t try them all. I was at Whole Foods and someone there told me about a grape seed oil something or other…..Ill add it to the list.
@IM Able: I have used Cetaphil lotion and moisturizer. The one in the tub was OK, but then after a few days I started getting itchy on my cheeks….rats!
@katie: my Italian relatives keep telling me to use olive oil but im too scared to try. Oil is one of the things that makes me break out. I heard Giada de Laurentiis used olive oil as well. Shes gorgeous!
@Kathleen: My good friend used Mario and she seems happy with it. Maybe I can borrow some of hers before I go spend the $$$ on it!
@danigirlygirl: I think ive heard of that (or something similar) before. Ill see if i can get some samples or something. Thanks!
I have extremely pale and sensitive/allergic/reactive/red skin. The only thing that doesn’t give me the burning tingles is HomeHealth’s unscented almond oil or the facial oil from Indigo Wild. Which I might add, you can get from wholesalesuppliesplus.com for a lot less and add your own vitamin E. Oil sounds horrible, but as long as you go sparingly, you won’t leave your print on the pillows!
hmm.. I was wondering why are you using hot hot water too? Because i was told by numerous of people that I shouldnt be using even hot water at all, at most just lukewarm water. (i have a habit for super hot water too)
Also, possible recommendations to use.. this might be difficult to find, but if you have aloe plants or know of someone that grows it, take a small bit of the plant, a small square of it will do, open the middle, slide it around of face, let it sit for a few minute, was it off. weird, i know but it works well!Your face will feel super smooth, helps your pores and acnes. If not, try those pure organic aloe creams, it works too!
I have eczema in my face and on my hands - I get it on my eyelids and around my mouth. I had it for years and tried every moisturizer under the sun and everything was great the first few days and then I got (seemingly) allergic to it.
After years of suffering I finally found a dermatologist who prescribed something that really helped: two creams - one just to fight the dryness - a mix of different moisturizing agents like Vaseline. I put that on the really dry spots almost every night. If something is really inflamed, like my eyelids sometimes, I use a hydracortison creme for a few days. Those two things together work like a charm and I am glad I found out about it before the wedding. I ended up having fantastic skin on the day of my wedding.
On top of that I also use Oil of Olay Complete for sensitive skin and at night I also use Estee Lauder perfectionist serum under my cream even though I am only 26 but I am obsessed with my skin also because I always had such troubles with it due to my eczema.
So, really, go check this with your dermatologist - they can help you better than anyone.
And stay away from hot water! It dries out your skin like crazy!
For the under the skin pimples - those are mostly caused by nutrition. Make sure you drink enough water and try to stay away from sugar and fat (chocolate is really bad for acne, I am afraid) and make sure you get your daily five fruits and veg.
I also have super sensitive skin, and the oil of olay sensitive lotion is the only thing that won’t make me break out. It also has spf 15, which is great.
I support all things organic, but I have had some serious allergic reactions and break outs to organic skin products, namely JASON shave gel and aftershave lotion that my fiance uses. Anywhere my face or neck touched his, I had horrible, painful break outs. My dermatologist said the lavender oil was the biggest culprit, but there were 10 or so other ingredients that he said could cause allergic reactions. It did clear up as soon as he stopped using it, but the scars are pretty bad.
He doesn’t want to use anything that has been tested on animals or isn’t organic but it is the only thing that won’t tear my face up!
It’s not organic but they do have a hypoallergenic form of almost all of the products. Try good old fashioned Oil of Olay. the original cream and night cream are lovely and very gentle.
I have skin issues as well. My skin is oily and dry and sensitive and breaks out when I am stressed. It has taken me my whole life to find something that balances it out. I have gotten micro-dermabrasion, chemical peels, etc. I have tried every single thing I can find! Basically, I needed something organic for sensitive skin as well, and what I found was amazing! I had been going to get facials every month for about 6 months before the wedding. My facialist suggested to me Eminence Organics, its made in Hungary. The lotion I use is called Thermal Spring Whip moisturizer. I LOVE it! Its made for pretty much weird skin; skin that if you use some things it makes it too oily, or if you use products for acneic skin, it completely strips it. I highly recommend it. You can get it online or some spas sell it. I have ordered from here http://buynaturalskincare.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=50 before, and they also sell small samples.
i like aveeno. they have spf and goes on nicely. one thing i would say is that they are getting more and more expensive. you can find them in any beauty product store.
I know you asked about moisturizer, but I don’t have a solution to that problem… I’ve got the same exact issues (i’m excited to find a solution in the comments)! I did want to chime in on the sunscreen part, though. I have allergic reactions to everything as well as chemical burns from lots of suncreens, too. On a whim, I tried the Blue Lizard SENSITIVE sunscreen (it only comes in SPF 30), and it works like a charm. Since it’s a mineral sunscreen, it can leave a whitish cast if you don’t rub it in really well, but since you’re pale (like me) it probably won’t be a big deal! I hope it works out for you!
I just went to the dermatologist a couple of weeks ago, and she recommended for me (I have sensitive skin that is prone to redness) to try Aveeno facial cleanser and moisturizer–the “Skin Calming” Aveeno in the pink/peach and white bottle. I had been considering giving that a shot. It’s supposed to be gentle. You might check it out.
I break out a lot, I have an oily t-zone its not organic but I LOVE it… it actually doesnt make my face greasy and it feel great on my skin
Clinique - Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. Since its a Gel its not greasy and will not clog pores.
I also started to use the Clinique - even Better Sikn Tone Corrector and I started to see results, I too had acne scars.
i don’t know if it’s organic, or how your skin m ay react to it (as my skin isn’t that sensitive) but my mom and i are both in love with The Body Shop’s vitamin E moisturizer. it’s wonderful!
if all else fails i highly recommend seeing a dermatologist. it’s worth it.
Try Jurlique products. You have to order them online but they are organic, biodynamic, and fantastic. http://www.saffronrouge.com/skin-care/moisturizers/jurlique-soothing-day-care-lotion
Don’t sweat the small stuff! Get a photographer that has amazing retouching skills!
Miss Dumpling- try using the Clinique Dramatically Different moisterizer lotion. They also have it in gel but that is for more oily skin. The lotion one is good for dry patches. You can get a sample of it at the department store. I would try it for 3 days at least and see. It doesn’t have any alcohol in it like most moisterizers do.
I too have sensitive skin and i’ve tried tons of moisterizers and i would always break out.
Miss Dumpling my sister has VERY similar skin to yours (or at least it sounds) and the only Moisturizer she can use is Purpose Moisturizer (http://hbazone.pharmacy-4-less.com/Purpose-Moisturizer-Fragrance-Free-4-Oz/M/B000NUOHKG.htm ) Although it is SPF 15, which may or may not work for you.
I suffer from crazy skin (super oily with every types of acne possible but suffers from occasional eczema outbreak) and i’ve tried just about everything under the sun. You should try La-Roche Posay’s Anthelios Spf 15 with mexoryl during the day. it’s not all natural or organic but had great sun protection and good texture and should work with your skin. it was too moisturizing for my skin but worked for my friend (who’s skin sounds very similar to yours). you should also try Caudalie products. they’re very natural and work well. a bit pricey but totally worth it. I’ve also heard Pangea products work well too and they’re organic.
I have sensitive skin as well, and am now using Proactiv products. They are absolutely amazing, and I’d be the first one to jump on one of those commercials and rave about how wonderfully it works.
Anyway, they have a moisturizer that is very very gentle with 15 spf built in.
Good luck!

Ms Dumpling i say you should use FRESH! it’s available at your local sephora. There face wash and moisturizer are made from soy! its organic and it works wonders! it made my skin as soft as a baby’s bottom within a week. GOOD LUCK! keep us updated on what you use
I second the jojoba oil suggestion. I’ve been using Desert Essence’s jojoba oil from Trader Joe’s. It’s organic, it (apparently) most closely mimics skin’s natural sebum, and best of all you only need 1 or 2 drops warmed up in your palms to thoroughly moisturize your whole face (best results if you do it right when you get out of the shower, to lock in moisture).
Check out the reviews for it on Makeupalley!

Burts Bees Soap Bark and Chamomile deep cleansing facewash. $7.99 @ Walgreens. Use that for a couple weeks and you won’t be asking for any other products, scouts honor
It’s 97% all natural and ph balanced (which is the key to perfect skin per my esthetician friend) without sodium laurel sulphate! Try it, you’ll be amazed.
Forget the products dear Ms. Dumpling and buy the Elvis MD Blue Light tool!
You can combat acne without chemicals (natural or synthetic) today. The investment is less than an appointment with your dermatologist. You still should continue the dermatologist appointments, sunscreen, and hat though. And do use bare minerals make-up rather than foundation.
Wishing you a perfect day!!!

Not organic, but Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer is fantastic. It’s the first moisturizer I found that really works for my combination skin. Also, if you go to a Kiehl’s store, they’re all about hooking you up with samples — so you can try before you buy it.
