I Missed the Class on Skincare

September 1st, 2008 @ 11:26 am by Mrs. Dumpling

It never occurred to me in my teens that I needed to take care of my face. Sun spots from the sun? Yes. But for the most part, I was relatively acne free and I didn’t exactly have dry or oily skin. Fast forward to now when all I think about when I look in the mirror is how badly I wish I could reverse all the years of lying in the sun without SPF 80 or wishing I wasn’t a “popper.” Ha.

Since our wedding is less than 7 months away, I’ve really been trying to pay attention to my skin. After all, I’m going to be photographed in all kinds of angles, different lighting, etc., and I don’t want to feel self-conscious on our big day. In addition, we want to go some place warm/tropical for our honeymoon, and I don’t want to wear foundation/cover-up while I’m on the beach. It’s not a good look.

I’d show you my face sans make-up, but it’s not cute. And I’m shy and I’m afraid you’ll make fun. But, maybe this visual will help: think of super pale skin. Add some redness and dryness around the cheekbones. Throw in some whopping under-skin blemishes and some scars from 10 years of picking at my face…. and that’s me.

Now, while I won’t dare say I have an acne problem, I will say that I have “issues.” You see, I’m allergic to just about everything. Pollen, most animals (boo!), tons of medicines and unfortunately most facial lotions, soaps and gels. I also live in the desert, which most certainly does not help. I can no longer get a facial or have a relaxing massage and I got a serious “talking to” from my dermatologist when I mentioned that I was still getting them. He said they were counteracting all of the treatments we’d been trying*. Shucks.

So what have I been doing? Well, for starters, I wear foundation with SPF and always wear a hat when I’m outside. I can’t use sunblock since I’m allergic to most brands. Second, I no longer spend money on fancy cleansers from department stores. I use plain ’ole Cetaphil bar soap, with hot hot water. It’s $5 at most grocery stores and lasts me about 2 months.

But here’s where I’m stuck. I don’t have a moisturizer. I can’t seem to find one that doesn’t make things worse for my face. Not even the Cetaphil brand. I’ve used Murad, Paula’s Choice, Chanel, Neutrogena, and the list goes on and on. I’ve even used Creme De La Mer, but without positive results. By the way, I’ve found (and this is just one person’s experience) that La Mer and Nivea Creme are basically the same. The only difference is the consistency of the two cremes. Nivea is quite a bit thicker and takes some time to work into your skin. Oh, and it’s significantly cheaper than La Mer.

Here’s where I need everyone’s help. Do you have know of any great organic products I should try? What has your experience been? I hope I can nip this in the bud before the wedding.

Not organic, but Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer is fantastic. It’s the first moisturizer I found that really works for my combination skin. Also, if you go to a Kiehl’s store, they’re all about hooking you up with samples — so you can try before you buy it.

I love Lush for natural/organic products. My current skin care regimen is using their Ocean Salt cleanser followed by Imperialis moisturizer. It’s not the cheapest stuff, but it can last for quite awhile so it pays off (for example, I bought my last 1.5 oz pot of moisturizer back in January or February. I’ve used maybe half of it in 7-8 months).

I second Kiehls…I use the sodium oil free PCA moisturizer which is great for sensitive skin!

Miss Dumpling — I am right there with you. I wish I took care of my skin in my teenage years, but luckily, I’m in my mid twenties and I have started a pretty good beauty regimen. As far as products go, I recommend Arbonne. I’ve promoted it here a few times in response to some other bees and I’m not sure if they tried it, but it is, hands down, the best product I’ve ever used. And it is all organic. Check out there website: http://www.arbonne.com. I use the anti-aging line and I’ve seen dramatic results in my very fine lines and some of those sun spots you’ve talked about. I’m sure there is an Arbonne consultant in your area, and you may want to host a party so you can get your pre-wedding beauty products for free! Please let me know if you use it!!

This is also not organic, but what about Pond’s cold cream? As Miss Shortcake raved, there are only 7 ingredients if you get the original kind.

I second MsAnge’s suggestion of LUSH. Everything they make is organic, and they’re also good at giving samples. I also love Imperialis!

Try using hope in a jar by philosophy!

I use Aveda’s skincare products, and have never had success with anything else. Well, to be honest, I only use their moisturizer and that’s good enough. Like you, I wash my face with Cetaphil, and like you, my skin is very sensitive. At the slightest hint of irritation, my eyelids slough off in a nasty dry mess. Seriously. Aveda’s moisturizer is the only thing that has worked for me, and it works like a charm!

Be careful with Philosophy - like you, I’ve got very sensitive skin and I’m allergic to a lot (but not Neutrogena - that’s all that will work), and their Hope in a Jar formula was too strong for me.

I haven’t tried Aveda’s skin products, but their shampoos are one of the only kinds that don’t make my scalp break out in a rash, so their moisturizer might be worth a shot. I think you can get a sample size at most stores.

Marisa, I get the nasty dry eyelids too - soooo gross. I got some prescription drops to use when they flare up, and that helps.

Not organic.. but, I use all Philosophy products.. I have sensitive skin (I too was a Cetaphil girl) - they have all kinds of products as Tammi mentioned above.. Hope in a Jar is good, they make a dry, sensitive skin kind as well - however I use original Hope in a Jar. They also make one now with an SPF in it - not sure what you’re allergic to - but take a look. I buy mine at Nordstrom.

Hi Miss Dumpling! Origins carries a USDA organic line. You should also check out your local organic foods store for skincare products but remember to read the labels for ingredients because some products are advertised to be “organic” but consists of mostly lab created material. There is also another USDA organic skincare line from Terressentials http://www.terressentials.com/fffacialcare.html that is supposed to be pretty fantastic. Good luck!

I have rosacea and just about everything aggravates my skin. My derm suggested this. CeraVe, the lotion, not the cream. It is intended as a body lotion, but I use it on my face. I have found it in most drug stores. HTH!

I also use Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar with their Makeup Optional regimen. It has done wonders for my skin! But it does have hydroxy acids in it, which may be irritating to your sensitive skin. It sounds like your derm is pretty strict - doesn’t she have a suggestion for you?

I have the same allergies as you do and then some, and I us Aveeno products. It might be worth the skin text. Typically drugstores will have a tester bottle, so you could put some on the inside of your arm and walk around the store shopping for a while to see if you react. I can’t get facials anymore because of the various cremes they use.

I agree with LoriJ, give CeraVe a try. It was developed by dermatologists for people with dry, very sensitive skin. It is the only thing that I can use on my allergic rashy skin. Also, consider seeing a dermatologist because you have plenty of time to get a regimen going with them. Good luck with your quest.

I use MD Skincare’s Hydra-Pure oil free moisturizer. MD Skincare also makes a non- oil free kind as well. It’s not organic, though. And it’s a bit pricey — I think around $80-90 for 1 oz.

Miss Dumpling! I can relate. I too use Cetaphil. When I want to gently exfoliate I add a bit of baking soda to the cleanser. I do however where a sunblock every day on top of that in foundation. I use Peter Thomas Roth Ultra light SPF. My skin is ultra sensitive and I have used this now for over 3 years with excellent results.
