Project Pomway: The Yellow Submarine

September 2nd, 2008 @ 4:16 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

For those of you just tuning in…
Project Pomway Episode 1: The Beginning of My Dream Dress
Project Pomway Episode 2: Boobilicious!

I returned to Carole’s studio for another fitting just last week. Now that the upper regions of the gown have been fitted, we’ve begun the design of the lower portion of the dress. I’ll start by telling you that the inspiration dress was designed as a sheath dress, but I knew that I - unlike the skinny little model who was wearing the inspiration dress - was much wider in the hip area and would do best with a little tweaking of the shape.

WARNING - IF YOUR NAME IS MR. POMEGRANATE AND YOU ARE MARRYING ME DO NOT CONTINUE READING!

It’s like Carole read my mind! When I showed up to try on the newest version of the dress, she had created the skirt in a creamy yellow silk shantung test fabric (my final dress will be all white). The shape of the dress was more of a modified trumpet that followed the curve of my hips and flared out above my knees. This would accentuate my waist and gave me less of the “sausage in a tube” look that long sheath dresses tend to give me.

I was having a bad hair day, so I cut my head off.

Sadly, it was a smidgen too short (Carole underestimated how tall my shoes would be) so I didn’t get a good idea of what the train will look like. I’m very excited for my next fitting where she’ll have a longer sample for me to try on. There will be another surprise along the hem, but I imagine I won’t see the beginning of that until the following fitting. My favorite part so far, is the triangle-shaped opening in the back.

You can see the back of the dress in the mirror behind me.

I’ve titled this episode The Yellow Submarine because I feel a little self-conscious about my belly area in the dress. I know that the double-faced satin will hang differently and that it will be fully-lined - but as it is currently, you can see the submarine’s control tower (AKA my belly button) quite easily through the fabric. While you can’t see it very easily in the above photos, it’s semi-obvious in person. I’ve considered band-aids, Spanx, and duct tape as options to cover it up.

Does anyone have any good suggestions on how to cover up my belly button so that it doesn’t show through my dress?

I love the back!
Do you have an outie or something?

If you’re not planning on wearing Spanx anyway, you can try Petals. They are actually made to go over your nipples if going braless, but would definitely work for this purpose, too!

I second: love the back!

The back is great, I think it will depend for the belly button issue. If I am remembering right you had bra cups sewn in so spanx would totally work.

I don’t know what to suggest about the belly button, but I LOVE the back of your dress!

@CarolineG: Actually, I guess it’s more of a hole than a bump. I have an innie and the dress dips in at my belly button.

@Ryn: It will most likely be finished about 2 weeks before the wedding.

@jennred782: The only worry I have with Spanx is that the seams will show. I may just have to buy one and try it at the next appt.!

Not that I have any experience with them or anything, but pasties might work well…although I see no evidence of a weird belly button :)

If you were planning to wear pantyhose, a control top or something like that could cover it. Or those slimming undies that go way up over the belly button… you don’t look like you need the slimming, but it might work to cover the “dip.”

LOVE the back! Sexy but not slutty. Awesome.
As for the belly button - SPANKX!!!!!! Comfort and all over smoothing of any lines.

I came to weddingbee just to see your updates! :)

I can not wait to see the finished product. My friend had the same problem with her wedding dress and she ended up wearing some “granny” panties to help cover up her belly button! Not attractive but hey, it worked!

spanx are over price and have seams. if you have a soma near you, go there and try on their body shapers. half the price and the fit is amazing.

Whenever I wear most formal gowns, the ball on my belly button ring shows, so I just tape it down with a band-aid and it’s fine. You can’t see the band-aid and it doesn’t hurt. I wonder if this would work w/ innie’s too.

a simple piect of masking tape should cover your belly button w/o having the paddedness of a bandaid or the ugly factor of grannie panties and I’m sure you have some around the house for a test at the next fitting.

@Miss Sweet Tea: I was going to cover that in a future post - but basically bought a piece of shapewear. Not Spanx tho!!
