A Something Old; What to Do

September 2nd, 2008 @ 2:40 pm by Mrs. Pineapple

When my parents were married in 1980, my mother borrowed her sister’s gown and they had a pot luck reception at the local church. My mother’s “something new” was her veil. 28 years later my mother has offered her something new as my something old. I already have and love my veil, so how should I use hers?

We would like to make more than one piece from the veil so my sister can have a something old for her wedding day. We have thought about making it into handkerchiefs or wrapping my bouquet handle, but we just are not in love with those ideas. What do you creative readers think?

It’s a very beautiful veil!!
I would hate to think of turning it into handkerchiefs though!!
How does that thought make your mother feel? I know this is just my opinion, but I would want to preserve the original, even if you didn’t plan on using it in the wedding.

I’m sorry I wasn’t more help!

You could take a piece of it and have it sewn to your money bag (if you’re having one) or your purse. I’m going to climb into my Mother’s Closet of Doom to look for her wedding gown. I’m going to have a piece sewn to the inside of my dress, by my heart. That might work for you, too. Our seamstress told me that some brides have a piece of their veil sewn underneath the skirt of the gown.

What about a parasol, the ring pillow, or a shawl?

for something old I used both of my grandmothers rings.. one happened to have blue stone in it.. so as people say - i killed two birds with one stone ;)

you can wrap a handle for your bouquet with this, I am sure it would look really cute. :)

I’m a wedding planning intern and constantly doing research. A popular idea is on your bouquet. Brides are attaching the handkerchief (or something borrowed) to hold the bouquet in place instead of ribbon. It adds a personal touch and if you are saving the drying & saving the flowers, you can keep it as a keepsake with your wedding memoirs forever :)

I think it would be lovely as part of your ring pillow, and one can be made for your sister at the same time.

What about making a pair of gloves out of it? A nice pair of short (wrist-length) lace gloves would look great with the vintage-y feel of your wedding.

Can you sew a piece of it into your dress, so you’ll actually be wearing it all night and have it preserved with your dress. That way your sister can have a piece too. You can save the other scraps for a quilt, or put it in a frame as matting behind a wedding picture.

What a wonderful heirloom.

What about using it for a cake topper? Those bird cake toppers are really popular and I’ve seen them covered with lace- or with lace used as the veil for the ‘bride bird.’ Or perhaps similarly for some other kind of cake topper.

What about making a small hair accessory from it. Use it to wrap a barrette or make a flower to pin in your hair. Similarly, you could make a pin to go on your purse or wear as a corsage.

Perhaps just use it to accent a handkerchief- just use the lace as edging. It could then be tucked into your dress, purse, or bouquet.

If you take a small enough piece from the veil, it could probably still be used as a veil, just a little smaller- then you wouldn’t have to worry about destroying it in the process.

My mom used the lace from her veil to make my garter — it was a very special way for me to wear a part of her dress and “something old.” She attached a blue silk ribbon to it for my “something blue.”

You could have it made into a garter. That would be a different way to incorporate it.

What about having 2 veils? One for the ceremony, and one for the reception (even if it’s just for the intros, dinner and first dance)? You could put the significance of your veil in your programs to really personalize it and share it with your guests.

I really like the shawl idea as well :)

I like the garter idea or maybe it could be incorporated into your veil somehow. I think the garter idea is cute and unique though

garter. the end.

You can preserve its integrity as a veil (so it can still be used by later generations if wanted) as decoration.
I love this idea on Rae Leytham’s photography blog

Depending on how much you want to cut it up, What about using it as background in a couple of frames, and putting your parents wedding picture in it, with your engagement picture in another. Or as the cover of your picture table. Poster #3 above –a parasol would be stunning!

How about a clutch? You could have one made. Possibly use satin as your base and the veil material as the overlay? You could use any remaining material to make a pocket inside of the clutch?

kenziegirl says:

are you having any hair pieces besides your veil? If you’re doing some sort of floral hairpin or comb, you could totally tie it into that.

first thing that comes up …garter :)

HCB says:

Garter is a great idea. But, as someone who didn’t want to wear a garter, I like the suggestion of sewing a patch in your dress. You could use your monogram too… and maybe add your mother’s monogram and wedding date. Your sister could do the same thing.

Alternatively, I really like the clutch idea. That your sister could carry on her wedding day also.

miss bliss says:

I like you thought of using it as something old. What if you use it as the altar cloth? It looks like it would be lovely!

Kristina says:

Whatever you want to do Ms. Pineapple! Either way I would love to share it with you somehow. I like the ideas of attaching it to your dress, the ring pillow, or even the garter. -Sister Pineapple :)
