Glamnuptials: Le Gateau

September 2nd, 2008 @ 2:15 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

Our wedding cake was so beautiful! It was literally a show stopper, or should I say a conversation starter. All our guests commented on how unique and glamorous it was, and it made me extremely happy to know that people actually paid attention. We wanted something unique, and thanks to all you readers, we finally had the perfect balance of brown, ivory and design.

For our cake topper, we used a vintage crystal glass that my step-mother had, and used the remaining arylic crystals that we used for our escort cards. I put a tealight candle in the glass so that way at night our cake would have its own mini chandelier.

The pattern on the cake wasn’t exactly the one from our invitation. It was extremely hard to do (though I attempted to cut out the pattern on clear acetate). Luckily our baker had a pattern similar to what we wanted. In the end, the result was awesome… and it’s not like our guests remembered the pattern on our invites anyway. ;)

We had a chocolate Ferrero Rocher crisp dessert included with our meal, so we served the cake later on with the sweets table. Since I figured not everyone would eat cake at night, I decided to make cake flags to go with our oh-so yummy dessert. It basically had our names on it with our wedding date and the clock element found on our RSVP cards. Matchy matchy. ;)

Sorry for the blurry picture, this is the only proof with our cake flags.

For the portions, we decided to make a cake for only 70 people (though we had over 150 guests), and I have to say it was still too much because we had tonnes left over. We had more than half the cake untouched… but we even forgot the leftover cake at the hotel. Oh well…

Did you save your cake to eat on your first anniversary?

@Linzerella: Well actually we cheated. Its the edible photo paper stuff that bakers put on cakes. My baker cut it as close to the chandelier as she could… and the outcome was great. People had no clue it was added on.

Beautiful cake!

Our bakery gave us the option of them providing another tier of cake that looks identical to my wedding cake for us to take home & freeze or they’d give us a gift certificate to get a fresh cake, identical to our top tier, for free for our anniversary. I chose the fresh cake. Several people have told me that no matter what, the cake tastes nasty if you freeze it. Plus I’m sure there will be at least one extra piece of cake that we could freeze if we want to be sentimental. :)

You’ve made me nervous about the number of cakes I am ordering! Everyone around me seems to think that we should order at least 8 (remember I have the cake buffet) but I don’t want entire cakes left over at the end of the night! It is our only dessert though….

We saved the top layer of our cake, plus we had quite a bit leftover that we snacked on after the wedding. We just passed our first anniversary in June and had our cake as part of our celebration. Honestly, it was really good! Not quite as moist as the wedding day, but the flavor was fabulous. My baker told me the key is all in how its wrapped before freezing and she even gave me written instructions the day of the wedding.
