About Mrs. Cupcake

A Warm Welcome

September 3rd, 2008 @ 8:29 am by Mrs. Cupcake

For a while, we thought we’d use gable boxes to hold welcome items for our out-of-town guests. Then, the fabulous Miss Sundae wrote about finding inexpensive canvas tote bags, and we swiftly changed our minds. Giving our guests bags that they could actually reuse sounded like a really cool idea, so we decided to go for it too.

The bags that Miss Sundae found were a little more expensive by the time I got around to buying them, so I found some similar 15″ x 16″ natural cotton tote bags from InGreetings.com for $0.94 a pop (now available for $0.98 each). The material was fairly thin, but overall we were impressed with the quality for the price. There were some slight variations in size from bag to bag, but other than that we didn’t have any problems, and delivery was very prompt.

I set to work trying to create a design for our bags that wouldn’t scream “THIS IS FROM OUR WEDDING” but instead would hopefully be something that people would reuse.

We eventually settled on an image of a tandem bike (it says “love” without being too schmoopy, no?), which I of course found on iStockPhoto.com, my go-to source for all of the images that I don’t have time to illustrate myself. Thank you, iStock!

To complete our design, I included a line from our first dance song (it says “Love is all about ‘we’”) and in the bottom right I added “B+N | 09.20.08,” just large enough to read. To print the design I ordered Versatex fabric ink in teal, thanks to Miss Candy Corn’s recommendation.

Once the master was flashed, blocked and all inked up, I set to work testing things out on one canvas bag… and, well, things were not looking good.

As you can see, the heavy coverage needed on the wheels of the bike combined with non-Riso Gocco ink did not bode well for me. Apparently, Versatex ink is a little thinner than Riso ink and it makes it difficult to get consistent ink coverage with a Gocco after the first impression. However, this little Cupcake was determined to make this work. After a handful of test runs, it became obvious that for adequate ink coverage, I would need to re-ink the screen before each impression (or at least, re-distribute the ink to be consistent across the whole image). We only had 65 bags (which were more than enough for our overnight guests) so I thought it wouldn’t be a big project. Well, it turned out to be bigger than expected. This “little project” ended up taking me a good four hours! In the end, though, I have to say that the bags look awesome, and I am really, really proud of them.

A Warm Welcome : wedding diy out of town bag philadelphia Img 35402My first successful impression

A Warm Welcome : wedding diy out of town bag philadelphia Img 35403All lined up to dry

Because the canvas bags are fairly thin, I put a piece of regular text-weight copy paper inside of each bag before Gocco’ing on it to prevent the ink from running onto the back of the tote bag. This is definitely a necessity if you are printing on thin bags. I removed all of the copy paper the next day after I was sure everything was 100% dry.

Is anyone else customizing OOT tote bags? How are you personalizing them?

Miss Cupcake: I love your OOT bags! I am slightly bias though, as our whole wedding theme is “Love is tandem”, and we have a vintage tandem bicycle to transport us from ceremony to reception (not too far of a ride, only a block away).
I have been looking for a great tandem bicycle illustration everywhere! I tried to find the one you have used on iStockPhoto with no luck. I used the search words “tandem” and “bicycle” and neither search gave me the illustration you used. Do you know what # it was?

Oh! And also which script did you use for the “Love” and “we” text?

@Miss Candy Corn: Whatevs, it was totally my complex image that made it a pain! You still saved me the trouble of having to mix teal ink on my own :-)

@MWeston2: The iStock image is 1368769 — but it is not a vector image, it is a photograph that I made into a vector image using Live Trace in Illustrator. I just couldn’t find a vector image that I liked so this was my solution! And, the font I used is Albemarle Swash (although I edited the “E” in “Love” myself to give it a fancy flourish on the end). One of these days I promise to do an Illustrator tutorial on how to edit type styles in Illustrator….. but it might have to wait until after my wedding!

They look fantastic! We are ordering cotton totes for our OOT bags as well, but I think we will use iron-ons because we don’t have a Gocco.

I did this with a compass rose logo, but I used the RISO gocco inks for fabric. They came out so much better than I had expected, and I love them (and hope our guests will too!)! One caveat: I don’t know about the ink you used, but the RISO fabric inks need to be heat set in order to remain colorfast through any washing or in case they get wet (it’s a water based ink). This is easy—just iron on the setting for the fabric–in my case, cotton–for about 30 seconds. I used a pressing cloth over the screened image to be safe, but nothing came off onto the cloth. Congrats on a job well done–they look great!

This is great! I was thinking of doing the same thing for our OOT bags, but I hadn’t figured out what to do about the cloth ink yet. Maybe I’ll just stick to the basic Riso colors. Thanks for the post!

Those are so cool. Hmm.. I wonder if I should get some totes and screen “I’m from out of town. Rob me first!”

Gocco Tip:
It seems gocco printers have a tough time whenever the entire screen is used. There are always spots that don’t get enough pressure to make an even print. Something that I do to keep from re-inking each time is slide a piece of cardstock (or two) between the screen and the plexiglass in the areas where even pressure is an issue. This extra thickness acts the same way extra ink does, but saves you time!
Great job with the bags!

adorable - certainly worth all the hard work… they look great!

we couldn’t find reusable bags we liked, so we bought fabric and my super talented mom sewed all our OOT bags. as a surprise personal touch, she embroidered our initials on the inside lining of each bag.

@nicole: anyone staying at the hotel gets one…. And, um, you live in AUSTRIA so clearly that is “out of town”! :-)

@AliCherri1: It’s actually a quote from “We,” a Neil Diamond song! :-) We will have our first dance to this song. It’s light-hearted and cute, which is just what we were hoping for so we’re not bawling during our first dance!!!
