Can We Makeup?

I love Sephora.

Since I haven’t been posting as much, I thought I’d write a huge honka-monga post on one of my favorite places ever! I have definitely slowed down my makeup shopping since I’ve been married. I still wear makeup everyday, but it takes me about oh, I don’t know— a good 10 minutes to slap on my makeup and run out the door. I tell Mr. Caramel that he is lucky that he married a woman who can get ready in 15 minutes! :)

Anywho, there are some neat-o things going on at Sephora. I think one of the best things they offer are the package kits they have every once in awhile, which basically is a “starter” kit of one of their product lines. It’s a great way to sample a line you’ve been wanting to try.

For example, I’ve been hearing some great things about Laura Mercier and I just happened to come in right when they had a starter kit available!

Here are the contents: (woohoo, free makeup bag!)

Smashbox also had a starter kit, so I grabbed one of those too! (only $47 with a value of $140!)

And here are the contents of the Smashbox package, which includes their fabulous Photo Finish primer!

Here is the list of things I use for makeup, which has not changed for the past 5 years!! Ehhh… Can you say, that it’s time for a change?

Powder – MAC studio fix (you can brush it on for a lighter load, or use the sponge for a heavier look)

Eyeliner – Bobbi Brown long-wear gel eyeliner. This is hands down my favorite, must-have makeup product. I love love this product! In fact, once I walked up to a Bobbi Brown counter, opened my mouth and the lady said “Let me guess… the Bobby Brown gel eyeliner?” She says that EVERY young girl that comes by is looking for that! Mmm I was impressed!

Eyeshadows – trio mix from Smashbox. I don’t necessarily think it makes THAT big a difference which eyeshadow you use since I don’t wear that much of it (others may disagree), but I do think that Smashbox has great colors in these little trio sets that I like. I just need one really great black eyeshadow and then I don’t really care what brands they are, as long as they are pretty colors.

Bronzer – Sephora was having one of their Bronzer Wall weeks, and I selected Hoola from Benefit. I haven’t really tried many others, but I liked this one because of the texture and because it doesn’t have sparkle. (Too much sparkle makes me look like I’m 8 years old.) Much better than the MAC bronzers in my opinion!

Blush – the famous “Orgasm” from NARS is pretty great, but like I mentioned above, it has this golden sparkle that I don’t always like. I’ve tried a Bobby Brown blush that has no sparkle and it is very matte when you put it on. I do think that you should splurge on something as important as blush because if it is really low quality and you touch your face a lot (who doesn’t?) it can leave some embarassing finger streaks!

Mascara – to be honest, I can’t help buying those cheapie mascara brands from the drugstore since you’re supposed to be getting a new one every other month or so. I actually really like some brands at Victoria Secret, like Extreme Volume, Very Black. (And it’s a good way to use all that VS credit leftover from your bridal shower!) but some of the best are definitely the “higher class” brands like Christian Dior. Recently I just purchased this brand called Fiberwig, recommended by a friend. It has actual hair fibers (you can see little pieces of it) so it will actually thicken your lashes by adding physical fibers to your lashes! I have extremely thin lashes so this idea won me over. I haven’t used this yet, so we’ll see if I love it!

z16326901

Eyebrows - I normally don’t do anything with my brows, but Sephora also has launched a new line called “Anastasia”. This comes from the famous Anastasia eyebrow waxing place in Beverly Hills. Honestly I don’t know what the hype is about that place because Billion Dollar Brows got 5 stars on Yelp and I think it’s just as good! (Cough… yes, I did spend $45 on eyebrow waxing! I’ll never do it again, although it was a very plesant experience.) Well since I was there, I picked up a brow pencil from the Anastasia line. Again, I barely started this so I’m not sure if I love it yet!

z16326902

Eyelash curler – Simple. you cannot go wrong with Shu Uemura! (May he rest in peace)

Lipstick – I rarely wear lipstick but when I do, I use my MAC lipstick “Half & Half.” I’ve been recommending this color to a LOT of my bride clients. It’s a very good subtle natural color. It’s nice because I don’t have to wear lipliner with it. I’ve also noticed that Sephora has a long lasting lipstick line and they have some pretty colors for a good price!

OK, that’s the end to my makeup saga. Of course, I didn’t even talk about one of the most important components of makeup–makeup brushes!! I’ll save that for next time. :)

Do you have any recommendations or advice about any of the products I just mentioned or any other brands?

The whole time I was waiting for you to talk about brushes! I’m in desperate need! :)

Do you use a brush to apply the eyeliner? I might be an amateur, but that seems hard to get precise!

Amazing timing! I am currently building up my sephora shopping cart for my big wedding day purchase right now. I LOVE their return policy (it stays that any product purchased online can be returned) so I’m going crazy and giving everything a try. The fiberwig stuff definitely sounds like it will work for me.

Agreed with Nstar. May you should write a tutorial…love the look of non-pencil eyeliner, but maybe it’s my lack of practice but I think it always looks kinda f-ed up on my eyes! =(

I love the concept of Fiberwig, but when I tried it, it made me look like I had fewer lashes–like I had ten thick lashes instead of lots of little hairs. I tried Kevyn Aucoin’s version, but, while I loved the look and separation of my lashes, the stuff was so wet that it doesn’t hold a curl on my lashes.

Does anyone know of any other fiber mascaras that are worth a try? I love how easily this stuff comes off, but I want one that’ll define and hold a curl.

yay more makeup recommendations please! what do you recommend for foundation? i’ve been using prescriptives liquid foundation, and it’s great, but i’m tempted to move to mineral powder (sheer cover is one)…

i LOVE the bobbi brown gel eyeliner as well. but i only use it for my top eyelids. what do you use to line the bottom of your eyes? i normally use pencil eyeliner (gel eyeliner on the bottom would be TOO much), but since i have pretty oily skin, it rubs off so quickly! maybe i’m just using the wrong brand? (i’ve been using shu uemura.)

i know that your asian~ and was wondering why you choose to wear brown eyeliner instead of black..does brown make your eyes appear bigger? i know asians tend to use black instead.

@Miss Avocado:

just a thought:
i understand that the return policy is great, but it’s not like nordstrom where you can return an item and someone else can get it. returning an item from sephora means that you are rendering it useless because it’s makeup products. so ordering “everything” …well, that is really taking advantage of a great company. i just don’t want women to read this comment and feel lead to order anything and everything with plans to return a good portion of it.

i would, instead, encourage women to make a trip to sephora, even if it’s a quite a drive, where you can try all sorts of testers. that way, you’re not taking advantage of the return policy and potentially ruining it for other women in the future.

I L.O.V.E. Diorshow mascara. I wear contacts, so I have searched far and wide for a mascara that wasn’t flaky, clumpy, or impossible to remove. And I’ve tried everywhere from department stores to drug stores. Hands down, Diorshow is my favorite. I have long eyelashes (trust me, it’s both a blessing and a curse) and it’s the only mascara I’ve found that just made my eyelashes look full and defined and pretty. I’ve never had a problem with it smearing, and unlike the cheap waterproof mascaras I’ve tried, it comes off when I want it to (I use MAC eye makeup remover).

I’m asian too and made the jump from black to brown eyeliner. I found that the black one is great for a night out and something dramatic. But use a brown one for everday wear. It’s much softer and more natural. I feel like the black makes my eyes appear smaller, but that’s just a personal preference.

I had been using Stila’s gel eyeliner and loved it. But I just ran out and will be picking up the Bobbi Brown one this week. Thanks!

yep… i’ve had that fiberwig mascara for a few months and i absolutely love it! it does elongate very well however lacks fullness which you can always supplement with another. I use Maybelline Full n Soft first then top it off with Fiberwig and the results are amazing!

@jacz: That’s a good tip re: brown vs. black eyeliner! I’ve been wearing black for years (day and night). I’ve just recently started using “black brown” colored liner and noticed how much better it looks for daywear. The black can be too harsh and dramatic for day…how did i not realize that earlier?!. I’m going to heed your advice and give brown a try.

I love fiberwig mascara & the smashbox primer! & I can’t wait to try a couple of your recommendations!

And am eagerly awaiting a makeup brush post!

@joyjoy: imo, You may want to concentrate your use of fiberwig more to the end of your lashes, so that you’re adding length, which I think is the point of this mascara. I also sometimes go back over my lashes with a volumizing (usually a cheapo) mascara to avoid the skinny lashes look…

What a timely post! I was just at the MAC counter yesterday. I was going to purchase the Studio Fix but the girl at the counter warned me against it for the wedding day because she said that it has the tendency to make your face look lighter than your skin in photos. She said that it really doesn’t matter if you’re pretty pale, but if you have a tan at all from the summer, it can sometimes make a noticable difference between your face and the rest of your skin. I hope that doesn’t discourage you from using the powder you want, but it’s something to think about. I would have had no idea if she hadn’t said something. Thanks for all the makeup info! I really want to try that eyeliner now!
