The Vera Wang that Almost Was…

September 4th, 2008 @ 9:35 am by Mrs. Dumpling

When we got engaged, I remember thinking to myself, “How can a dress possibly cost $5000?” But then, I flipped through the pages of In Style Weddings and Modern Bride, and I quickly got schooled.

One day, while searching for gowns online, I found an incredible Vera Wang dress that I loved, and immediately went to a bridal salon to try it on. I just wanted to know what it felt like to put it on! It hit me in all the right places and made me feel pretty, but unfortunately, it was out of my price range.

Imagine my delight (read: an ecstatic, frantic OMG moment) when I saw my dream dress for 1/3 of the price at a sample sale in San Francisco! It was still more than I had planned to spend, but I hardly ever spend money on myself. It felt nice knowing that because it was heavily discounted, that I might be able to buy it. I also felt like a bride in it, which was something not one single dress had done for me before that day. That dress just did something to me.

Here she is, with a champagne colored sash that I added.

As usual, I wasn’t ready for the picture to be taken. At least my eyes were open, though.

You’re probably thinking, “That’s fantastic!” right? Well, no. Not so much.

I was with FMIL Dumpling that day, and we found the dress on a Saturday afternoon. I needed to leave the store to have lunch and think about the amount of money I was about to lay down before I made a final decision. I try to step away and think about big purchases before I make them sometimes. In addition, I was in a Vera Wang haze and couldn’t think clearly. So, we left the store and I thought about it. After eating my walnut prawns and chow fun, I finally decided that it was indeed, the dress. We decided to go back to the store the next day to make the purchase.

Well, silly me—we went back the next day, a Sunday, and the store was closed, and I was scheduled to fly back home to Vegas that night. Luckily, my generous FMIL said she would go down to the store when they opened on Monday and buy the dress since I wouldn’t be able to do it myself.

So, she went back on Monday and they still had the dress. WHEW!  Since they don’t hold sample sale dresses, we were in luck. She called to tell me the good news, and I asked her to look the dress over once more to make sure there weren’t any major problems with it. I was in my Vera Wang haze the day I tried it on, so I didn’t think to closely look it over.

Here I am, in my haze and not paying attention.

In la la land…

What. An. Idiot. (Said with Hermione Granger’s accent, of course.)

Turns out, there was a mark on the dress in a very visible spot that would not come out. And I totally didn’t see it. The only way to disguise it was to put a “pick-up” in the front of the dress. While I think pick-ups are gorgeous, I felt like it would take away from the intended design of that particular gown.

It’s a small spot, but I would be staring at it all day.

This is where the pick-up would have gone.

I thanked FMIL Dumpling and she headed home, without the dress. In the end, I couldn’t spend that much on something that wasn’t perfect, especially before adding in the cost of alterations. So, no Vera Wang for me.

I do, however, have a new friend named Priscilla. She’s from Boston. Do you know her? I’ll bring her around later for everyone to meet and we can all be friends.

Does anyone else have a crazy story about their dress? Do you think it’s worth it to spend money on designer you love for your wedding day?

Good thing you found the spot when you did!! Sample sales can be scary like that! I also have a friend named Priscilla, and she’s also from Boston! I bought my dress at a sample sale and it is my dream dress. It was a very quick decision and afterwards I feared that I would see another dress and have regrets, but to this day I can honestly say that I have never seen another dress that (in my opinion because every bride thinks her dress is the most beautiful) even compares to my dress!!

I heart all the Bee Harry Potter references! But, I’m sorry your Vera wasn’t to be — though I have to say, I’m partial to PofB, being the proud owner of a Melissa Sweet myself. Can’t wait to hear more! :-)

Oh that dress is amazing! Too bad that it didn’t work out, but at least you did find out about the spot before it was too late!

Vera is so dreamy on you. Curses on the bride who damaged the dress!

I went to a salon in an area that I KNEW would be out of my price range, but I thought it would be fun to try on the dresses anyway - well I fell in LOVE with a 3,000 dress (which was WAY out of my price range) and even though I, of course, loved the dress I ended up buying (at a more reasonable 1,000), I still wondered about the dress that ‘almost was.’

Aaah the sample dress brings me back to “crazy, mean boutique owner” lady.

She said “the one” was no longer available but that I could have the sample for $900. I was there w/ my mom and FMIL. We knew that we alone had inadvertently stepped on the train TWO times, crushing some of the beading. I even confessed it to the owner. She insisted, no worries because she could fix it.

One of the moms jotted down ALL the info on the dress and we headed off to another place. They too knew the dress and were sure they couldn’t order it.

I went home and cried because I found “the one” but couldn’t actually have it. Under my moms advise I went online to look for it because as she said, “that internet have everything right?”

Sure enough, after a couple of searches and a couple of calls, I got “the one” BRAND NEW from an online dress dealer. For the low, low price of…FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS!

Score!…I say you look for your VW online too because you just never know what’s out there and at what amazing price. Good luck girl!

Have you tried “House of Brides?” You may be able to get it there for a significant discount.

I fell in love with my friend Mori Lee from the UK. She had a style that was unavaliable here in the US so I emailed them directly in the UK and they sent me the name of an online retailer in London who sent my dress to a store here. Somehow, everything works out in the end and you get the dress that makes you feel like a beautiful bride.
Good luck!

My dress is Alfred Angelo. Brand new, never even tried on by another bride, $600. The styling is actually similar to your VW - a sort of pleated wrap - although it is not strapless. Sure, you can spend thousands of dollars if you want, and if (as you point out) you are dazzled by the designer name. You can also get a very lovely dress - made new for you - for well under $1000.

It was a beautiful dress on you but fate was telling you that it wasn’t meant to be. That makes the dress you ended up with even more special.

I fell in love with my Amsale dress when I was shopping with my mother. We didn’t have an appointment, but one of the dresses caught my eye, and luckily, the woman allowed me to try it on. AMAZING!!!

Obstacle 1: Out of my budget
Surprise 1: My mother offered to pay for the dress. However, I didn’t purchase the dress at the time since I was visiting my mother who lives in Texas, and I live in NYC.

Obstacle 2: My FI did not want me to spend all of the money on the dress since we could take my mother’s contribution and put it towards the wedding.
Surprise 2: I agreed, but then, my friends made a dress appt for me during an Amsale trunk show, and what I heard is that they can give you a discount.

Obstacle 3: The discount was only 15%. I think that most wedding stores give at least 15%. Still out of budget.
Surprise 3: My girlfriends all knew about the dilemma, and they contributed 25% towards the dress… CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??? It was the most amazing gesture ever.

I GOT MY DREAM DRESS!! But shhh… the FI doesn’t know how much it actually cost.

I got an amazing deal on a dress by my dear friend Vera Wang at the annual Macy’s Bridal Salon sample sale. She was a beauty… ruching at the bust, empire waist, a-line and strapless. Her color was this LOVELY ivory.

When I took her to the drycleaner for her pre-wedding (thankfully, I sent her 9 months before the wedding), they damaged her and left gray streaks across the bodice. She’s been cleaned 2x since and the streaks are still there (I was CRUSHED).

I made an emergency appointment with my lovely friend Priscilla and put a deposit down on another lovely gown — she is nothing like my dear first gown, but she is lovely just the same.
