Knot Too Shabby

September 7th, 2008 @ 12:39 pm by Mrs. Lemonade

Although I have found many pretty pictures on the site, I’ve never been very active on the Knot (I don’t even have a planning bio!).

To be completely honest, the boards scare me a little. Some of the commentary is a bit intense for this girl who really tries to keep wedding planning as light and fun as possible. However, I have to give props to the San Antonio and Austin boards, as I’ve met 2 of my lovely vendors via central/south Texas Knotties.

The first was our Day of Coordinator (DOC).

I searched high and low for a DOC in San Antonio that wouldn’t break the bank. I met with a bunch of planners and coordinators, all of which seemed very competent and professional, and I even hit it off with a few of them pretty well. Unforch all were WAY outside of my budget. I started thinking we’d have to go without and rely on my teenage sister and (adorably) wedding clueless mother.

I turned back to the boards one last time and read a recent vendor review from an Austin bride. The DOC she used was someone I’d never heard of before, and the bride had given her RAVE reviews. I figured, what did I have to lose? I called the DOC, Becky, and we scheduled a meeting halfway between our 2 locations for the next afternoon. When we met, we totally hit it off and I was getting pretty excited about working with her. Once she slid the contract and pricing over my way, I was sold – her rates were literally a fraction of what anyone else I met was charging. Done and done.

I was also at a total loss in regards to the florist. The company that the Club referred me to never returned my calls or emails and didn’t have a website. Most of the companies that came up in my interweb searching were either way out of our budget or suspiciously similar (aka the FTD effect) – not for me. I was getting desperate and figured I should start researching diy florals (which was the LAST thing I wanted to do). Due to my recent success in finding Becky, I figured I’d give the old boards another go. I’m so glad I did as that is where I met my super sweet and talented floral designer, Erin.

Erin is a newlywed who truly understands what it means to be a bride (seeing as she herself was one recently), and is incredibly flexible and accommodating with her time and creativity. We’ve been corresponding via email for the past couple of months and I can’t wait to meet her in person and see what she comes up with for us!

How and where did you discover your vendors?

I’m with you on the Knot boards, Miss Lemonade — they kind of scare me. You’d think the future of the universe hung on whether or not some poor bride in Ohio serves alcohol at her reception, from the way people post!

I do like The Knot for vendor listings, though. That’s how I found the bridal shop where I got my gown.

Lemonade, will you send me your DOC info? I’m still looking! Our caterer comes with a coordinator but I don’t know if she’ll do the wedding too…so I’m looking just in case.

For a makeup artist in Austin you should check out Katie at Modern Muse Makeup! She’s amazing, always gets great reviews on that Knot board, and also happens to be a good family friend of mine :)
Here’s her website:

So, for the sake of this New Braunfels bride, will you share your finds? Who is this highly praised DOC and florist? I’m in need of both!

I am a regular on the knot boards (austin and Houston) but only stay on the local ones except for the making it personal board. That national ones are very intense at times. I found so many of my vendors from the girls on the knot. Im so glad you like Becky, she is a great girl!

I’m also on the knot borads and only stick with my Local Des Moines, IA bored. People on the national boards are just rude. A few of the girls on the DSM board used to post on the national boards but felt the ladies weren’t very nice. Every now and then I’ll look around on the October 2009 board, but it seems to still apply.
I acutally get more vendor advice from other knotties then I do from the vendor page. DSM has only about 6 or 7 vendors and not all catagories have them.

How funny- I’m using Becky and Erin as well! Erin is actually a personal friend of mine, and I’m so excited to be working with both of them. I also found out about both of them from the knot- it’s been incredibly helpful through the planning process.

By the way, Miss Lemonade is referring to Becky with Stress Free Events and Erin with Eden’s Echo.

Erin is a dear friend of mine, and I am so happy you’re using her- I am too!!

The Knot isn’t too bad once you build up a thick-skin. ;o) I’ve made good friends with some of the girls from the SA board.
