Do You Speak Canadian?

September 8th, 2008 @ 8:29 am by Mrs. Dumpling

Embarrassing stories are the best, right? Back when I was a tiny 7th grade dumpling, I met my MOH, R. If anyone knows what it’s like to be the new girl in class, it’s her. She moved to Alabama from Canada and had the strangest accent I’d ever heard. Mrs. Austin sat her right behind me, and 12 years later we are still acting like junior high schoolers. Here’s a synopsis of our first conversation:

Me: Hi, I’m Miss Dumpling. Where did you move here from?

R: Hi, Im R. I just moved here from Canada.

Me: OOOHHH Neat! Do you speak Canadian?**

R: Are you serious? (She realized I was serious.) Oh, ok. Yes. I speak Canadian. (Rolls her eyes)

Me: Sweet! Say something in Canadian. Umm, say “The dog is sleeping.”

R: Wow. That’s a tough one. “The. Dog. Is. Sleeping.” “Eh.”

I was a little confused by the new girl being so snotty, but I decided I was going to make her my best friend, anyway. :) After all, how can you not be friends with the someone who has a dorky snort laugh?

11th grade, roaming the halls of high school. Like our orange highlights? We did them ourselves!

Typical picture of Miss Dumpling, stuffing her face.

Double-date to the prom!

She’s getting married this weekend in Canada and I’m so excited for her! I haven’t settled on my entire bridal party yet, but when Mr. Dumpling proposed, I knew immediately that I would want my special friend standing up there with us on our wedding day. She’s seen me at my best, my worst, and all those days in between.

I guess that since she will be a Mrs. by the time Mr. Dumpling and I get married in March, that makes her my Matron of Honor. Ha! I don’t like that title, so I am hereby changing it to “Diva of Honor.” Because that’s what she is!

**I know, I know…. silly dumpling! I can’t believe I asked someone that!

How did you choose your Diva of Honor?

That is a cute story! You two look like you have so much fun together! It was easy for me to pick my MOH. She is my longest and bestest friend ever. We have known each other since the day I was born and have been lifelong friends so my choice was obvious.

I agree, very cute story. My sister is my Matron of honor. I was her maid of honor for her wedding 4 years ago which is where I met my future husband! I couldnt imagine anyone else being my matron of honor.

Ha ha @ Miss Avocado DOH for Diva of Honour… only when she asks questions like “Do you speak Canadian?” :-D

I chose my little sister because… well, she’s my little sister!

That’s hilarious. I moved from Texas to Canada in high school and met my best friend H when our science teacher sat me next to her on the first day of school. My school counselor had written “new student from Texas” on my schedule and when H saw it she got excited and asked me if I liked horses (because she sure does!!). I got super annoyed and said no, and she said, “Oh… I do….” and I thought “Stupid!!! I just lost my first friend!!” So when someone else asked me later that day if I liked horses, I said yes. :) They are both my best friends to this day. :)

LOL! I love your story!!
My Diva of Honor and I met at a college tour of Roger Williams University when we were high school juniors. It was hysterical, especially because it was all due to both of us being late. After that, we were inseperable.

Nice! Although I’m a born and raised Texan, people CONSTANTLY ask me if I’m from Canada (I guess I have a hard time pronouncing the o-u vowel sound)…Now I can tell them that I am fluent in Canadian! heehee! BTW, you two are too cute together! I bet you had a blast in school!

My Matron of Honor is my BFF from first grade (25 years ago!), and my Maid of Honor is my sister who is 10 yrs younger than me. I could never pick between the two of them!

On another note, when my sis was little, my dad asked her if she knew where Canadians were from, and her answer was (of course) “Canadia”. We got a lot of laughs out of that one for a long time. (Poor girl!)
