About Mrs. Pineapple

Wined and Dyed

September 8th, 2008 @ 10:25 am by Mrs. Pineapple

A little while back I asked for the hive’s help in trying to decide what color to dye my crinoline/slip. After reading your suggestions to dye it yellow or orange as a nod to my pineappleyness, I thought it would be funny if I tie-dyed it like this:

It’s a pineapple!

However, when I saw Miss Avocado’s post about helping her friend dye her crinoline, I fell in love with the wine color. I thought it would look just oh so pretty with the color of my gown. Plus, trying to dye my crinoline like a fruit could have been a nightmare.

So, this weekend Mom Pineapple, the washing machine and I got to work.
Here is a before shot of the slip. Clean and white and not too much fun.

We used two bottles of the RIT liquid dye to make sure the color turned out nice and bold. I was hoping for a deep wine rather than a pink.

We did not have to add salt to the mix because the fabric is 100% nylon.

While Mom Pineapple read the instructions, I gave the slip a bath in good old fashion spring water.

Finally time to stuff the washer. Mom Pineapple dove in and started loading the poof, but soon realized she would need a tool in order to keep her hands from being dyed. So, she reached for one of the only tools in our combination laundry room/bath room — the plunger.

She was worried about dying the plunger. So I had to remind her what a plunger was used for and that wine colored dye was the least of a plunger worries.

After two agitation cycles and three rinses, project color my crinoline was completed! You may notice that we did some tie-dying after all, on accident. The top of the slip is splotchy. Not pretty, but no one will see that part anyway. The bottom came out pretty evenly dyed:
Seeee? We should have taken it out between the two agitation cycles and untwisted everything, but we didn’t. Overall I am so excited; the color is very bold and it will be fun to wear on our wedding day. Also, it looks awesome with the color of my gown (no peeking Mr. Pineapple).

Did you color your crinoline?

Beautiful!
RIT dye is tricky and you two did a wonderful job. Can’t wait to see the whole wedding ensemble!

I dyed mine a super dark purple (3 bottles of RIT liquid purple) and I got the same tie-dye effect on some of mine, even though I did the stop & untwist a couple of times… I LOVE that wine color though!

I think yours is even darker than hers was. It does look so gorgeous with your gown. You’ll have so many cute photos with this peeking out underneath!

I didn’t dye mine - my mom made it out of fabrics about the same color as yours. I love mine in the pictures - I’m sure you will too!

I thought about dyeing it but as it’s a mermaid it’s attached to the dress so I decided it would have been too much work to detach, dye and reattach it. Yours looks gorgeous, though!

Love this, Miss Pineapple - the contrast between your dress and the crinoline looks great.

i have one question about the crinoline: won’t some of the dye come off on the inside of the dress?

i’m just asking because i used to use RIT to dye my jeans in hs and had all kinds of problems with the dye rubbing off my my skin, tighty whities, etc…

We did a trial run on an old crinoline poofy slip of mine left over from years of theater. We bought two packets of powdered RIT fuchsia and went to work. It came out perfect, just like yours! Lovely color Miss Pineapple!

@nina: When I was dying mine, I looked around for different tip/tricks/hints and saw that if you do a vinegar rinse, you should be safe…

You look just like your mom!! How cute!

I would be so nervous to dye that. You are much more brave than I.

Thanks ladies! My mom was so nervous, I was not so much. What was the worst that could happen? It turn out like poop and I wear it under my gown? Not so horrible.

@nicole3381: Well, Maybe there is no getting around the striping one it gets all twisted.

@nina: The vinegar sounds like a good idea. I am going to wash it again before I wear it with the gown and hopefully and residual color will wash out. If not and some color get on the poofiness under my dress that is ok, at least it won’t get on the actual gown.

@Me: well a little while ago I decided against making everything 2 colors because I’m not into matchy matchyness. I am now decorating the wedding like I would my house. Hopefully no clashing, but that is my only rule.
