About Mrs. Dumpling

A Few of Our Favorite Things

September 9th, 2008 @ 4:32 pm by Mrs. Dumpling

When you read the title, did that song totally pop into your head? HaHa. The Sound of Music is one of my favorite things. Actually, I have a lot of favorite things. They range from reading a great chick-lit novel (Anything from Emily Griffin or Lauren Weisberger is fine by me!) to my TiVo - which captures Jon and Kate Plus 8 and Office re-runs all week! Mr. Dumpling shares my love of The Office, Thai food, reality shows and sleeping late. We’re a good match!

When we thought of what kind of wedding we wanted, we knew it had to be uber personalized. I wanted Mr. Dumpling’s family members that I hadn’t met before to walk away feeling like they knew a little something about me and vice versa for my family and Mr. Dumpling. The first thing that I knew I wanted to personalize was our music. Namely, the song I would walk down the aisle to.

Heres my short list of aisle songs:
1. Here Comes the Sun, The Beatles
2. Here, There and Everywhere, The Beatles
3. Something, The Beatles (accoustic instrumental version)
4. God Only Knows, The Beach Boys
5. To Make You Feel My Love, Garth Brooks
Beatles overkill? Not possible! I happen to be a huge fan of theirs and I wanted to somehow incorporate that into our wedding.

I had to include this picture for my fellow Beatles brides. (source)

Well, Houston, we have a problem. His name is Mr. Dumpling and he is a strange, strange cookie. He has no love, whatsoever, for my beloved Beatles. (I’m still scratching my head and wondering how someone cannot love them.) Sure, he took me opening night to the LOVE show at the Mirage, but frankly, he didn’t enjoy it (although, I highly recommend this show!). Mr. Dumpling is a very laid-back, easy going guy and hardly ever vetoes anything I suggest. So when he put his foot down and said “We are not having a Beatles themed wedding,” I was happy to drop the subject. I guess no Beatles for us.

Seriously though, if I had my way, our wedding would be one big Yellow Submarine! Check out this awesome cake!

I know that when it comes down to finalizing the details, Mr. Dumpling and I will incorporate both of our favorite things into our big day. Whether it’s a big southern buffet with fried chicken and sweet potatoes, or wedding favors featuring homemade dan tats (egg custard…..yummy!), we know that our guests will leave knowing a little something about us.

How about you guys? What are some of your favorite things that you’ll be incorporating into your wedding?

I don’t really care for the Beatles either. Save for a few songs and more of Lennon’s solo stuff.
“God only knows” would be sooooo cute!
I love me some Beach Boys

I’m sorry to hear that Mr. Dumpling has nixed the Beatles because I was recently at a wedding where they had a Beatles tribute band play the reception. It was amazing. I am a huge Beatles fan, and they sounded so great. It was hands down the most fun I’ve ever had at a wedding. As for your walk down the aisle song, I’d choose Here Comes The Sun or Something. Here, There and Everywhere is beautiful, but Here Comes The Sun is so uplifting, and Something is a really perfect, beautiful song to walk down the aisle to. Anyway, just my two cents.

That’s an eerily similar story. Get this …

My favourite band is, and only has been, The Beatles. Cooler girls at school made fun of me for my obsession. John Lennon was my no.1 crush and dream husband (didn’t matter that he was already married, and, oh yes …. dead … before I was born). I mentally made a note to listen to ‘I am the Walrus’ in 2067 to check that JL was right, and it does indeed sound just as good 100 years later.

(note: I have calmed down a lot now I’m no longer a teenager, but still love them).

My fiance hates the Beatles. Note I didn’t say ‘not love’. I didn’t say ‘doesn’t like’. Hates. With a passion. And for some unknown reason, gets violently angry everytime he sees Paul McCartney on tv.

Now, I claim he just hasn’t heard enough of their music to know if he likes them or not. But, either way … no Beatles music for this bride.

If only John were still available …

(Sorry if this got double posted)
My friends used a piano solo version of Here There and Everywhere for their bridesmaids processional. It was really beautiful. I linked a copy of it. Good luck with your music search!

Hehe. I was a HUGE, OBSESSIVE Beatles fan throughout my childhood and teens, thanks to my supercool hippie parents. It’s since toned down but they’re still my #1 favorite band. Thankfully, my FH loves them too (okay, well, he owns Sgt. Pepper anyway) and that’s pretty much the only commonality in our musical tastes, so we shall have a lot of Beatles. A lot of classic rock, in general, which makes me happy.

cute… =)

my DH and i both met playing the piano so we played a duet on the piano in lieu of a first dance. coincidentally, we both love sound of music as well, and had planned to play, “my favorite things,” but didn’t practice enough. so we played “do re mi” instead. =)

Oooooh! I love the Beatles, too!
Our first dance was a Rumba to “And I love her” by none other than the Beatles :D
Maybe you can ask for only one item of Beatles related things? (Ie. if you get to walk down the aisle to one of the Beatles songs, nothing else from the Beatles is mentioned in the rest of the wedding.)

I also love penguins. So, we had penguins stamped on our programs, penguin table numbers and the cutest penguin cake topper ever.

i’m eating my spicy Thai basil chicken right now… too bad I’m working or I’d be watching the Office now too! hehe. Mr. ST hates hates hates the Beatles. There will be none at our reception, which I am a tad sad about. Not even “I am the Walrus” or something non-sappy! Oh wells.

I grew up with the Beatles! I had my dad choose our F/D dance and of course the 3 he had chosen was all Beatles. I think we went with In My Life.
I could not imagine NOT having the Beatles @ our wedding.
Thankfully Mr. Sunflower agrees and actually chose our recessional song of….

When I am 64 by the Beatles. I knew there was a (one of many) reasons I am marrying Mr. S.!

I walked down the aisle to Here, There and Everywhere done by our string trio. It was beautiful. My husband doesn’t share my love of the Beatles, but agreed since it was my walk, I got to choose it. Plus, when done on the strings, you can’t tell its the Beatles, and its just a beautiful song, but I sang along the whole time in my head. :) I did sneak in “In My Life” for the last song played during the reception too. I thought it was a fitting end to such a memorable night.

I just found out today that we are possibly going to have real polish sausage made by Polish people for my second reception! That is one of Mr. Avocado’s favorite things. I love little touches like that.

lol! I can totally relate to your list because we had “All my life” by the Beatles as the Mother-Son dance. YAY! and “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys as our first dance song.

To incorporate our love of music into our wedding we chose very specific songs relating to family members for the prelude and it was something that each person we “targeted” realized as they heard it play while waiting for the ceremony to begin.
At the end of the ceremony we walked out to “You’re my Best Friend” by Queen. It was the most “us” song we could find that could be played in the chapel. We both would have loved to play some WASP but couldn’t find the song we were looking for without the words (which included some pretty racy lyrics) ;)

Have you checked out the Vitamin String Quartet? They do string quartet versions of popular music, and I know they have a couple of Beatles albums. So then it would be Beatles, but not *too* Beatles…maybe a compromise? We’re using some of their music for our ceremony. And I love their version of God Only Knows!

My husband LOVES the Beatles.. and when I say LOVES.. I really mean LOOOOVES them. So, we have our very own Beatles them song. I walked down the aisle to instrumental Beatles, our first dance song was Something. My father-daughter dance was “Michelle”, because that’s what my father named me after was that song (he cried through it all the way) and the mother-song dance was 8 days a week, because when he was little his mom had to explain what the phrase ment and told him that she loved him so much, she loved him 8 days a week. Plus we snuck in lots of beatles songs into our dancing and cocktail hours. I’ve just seen a face, Love me do, Shout, Every Little Thing, etc

I’m experiencing deja vu too! My FI also has no love for the Beatles, (even though he’s British…. and his father was a drummer for them during their early early days as a pub band). I have always loved the wedding scene in Love Actually where the couple uses “All You Need is Love” and want to do the same…. well, minus the live musicians, choir, and singer… if only, but he considers it a compromise to use a Beatles song. What to do?

My husband isn’t a huge fan of the Beatles…thinks they’re totally overrated….whatever. Boy’s can be silly.

But…I walked down the aisle to a really pretty instrumental version of “Here Comes the Sun” by Pedro Gustavi (Sp?). It was a beautiful and upbeat song and really fitting for the moment. I love when brides walk down the aisle to something with a good melody.

Awww… my parents/grandparents etc walked down the aisle to “In My Life” and my bridesmaids walked down the aisle to “Here Comes the Sun”. Just thinking about that music warms my heart now. The Beatles are the best!!

I’ve so enjoyed reading everyone’s comments! Im so glad there are so many Beatles fans out there!
@lou: You are so funny! Don’t worry- I too have a Bealtes crush in John Lennon. I think I might name my first born “Lennon”…that is, if I don’t get vetoed. Which I probably will.

When my aunt had her wedding, she walked down the aisle to “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles in the 60s! I love the idea. I’m actually planning on playing it as we walk back down the aisle as husband and wife :) It’s such an upbeat pretty song
