About Mrs. Pineapple

Thank You! Already!

September 9th, 2008 @ 9:29 am by Mrs. Pineapple

It’s five weeks before the wedding and we have already received three gifts! They are all very thoughtful, and we knew that we needed to get our thank you cards made, or Emily Post would find a way to track us down and haunt our dreams of wedded bliss.

We wanted to make something clean and simple that would fit in with the look of our invitations. So, using the copper paper and typeface from the invites, Mom Pineapple and I made these:

If you are new to DIY stationary and want to make your own invites, I think that making your own thank yous is a great place to start.

Plus, you’ll get them out of the way early. :)

We started with a sheet of “thank yous” printed on heavyweight matte paper (basically a smooth finish card stock), copper card stock, a paper cutter, and a Xyron machine.

I just printed these out on my printer at home with trim lines.

Mom Pineapple helped me run the sheets through the Xyron. The whole time she kept saying, “Oooo! I neeeed one of these!”

Then, we moved on to cutting them apart.

We did the same with the copper paper.  We ran it through the Xyron and then cut each piece a little larger than the thank you pieces.

Then we peeled the backing off of the thank yous and tried our best to center them on our pieces of copper paper. Then, all we had to do was peel the backing off of the copper paper and stick them to the pre-cut cards. We bought the cards at Michaels.  They came pre-cut and scored for easy folding. Done and done.

Did you make your own thank you cards?  What did they look like?

Those are great! My mom said the same thing when she first saw me use the Xyron - that thing has been more handy then anything else I’ve bought for my wedding projects!

Very cute! I like the idea of putting a lot of time into your thank-you cards, because your guests will really pick up on that and feel that much more appreciated!

For an engagement party (of sorts) Mr. MagPie and I hosted in late August, I made my own version of the “thanks a melon / a melon thanks” card Mrs. Eggplant blogged about. I used the floral punch to make the “bite” AND the seeds, and alternated the written expression with the color of the watermelon (light or deeper pink). http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/02/26/youre-one-in-a-melon/ They came out SO cute!

I love my xyron too! But I actually found that it was helpful to cut the pieces to size first, THEN run them through the xyron (it’s a bit of a pain, but you get the hang of it after a few rows). Otherwise, my paper cutter would get all sticky, and it was much easier to peel off the backing if they were spaced out.

I have both the big model you have and the very small one that looks like an “X”, which was actually great for pieces like those. I fed them through and made one big long strip of stickers.

I didn’t make my own, but I did address all of our thank-yous before the wedding. It was a HUGE time saver after we got back from the honeymoon - people couldn’t believe how fast I got the notes out.

this may be a stupid question but what is the advantage of the Xerox machine instead of just printing multiple sheets of Thank Yous? Your cards look great!

Miss Pineapple says:

@mtyf: I know this may sound super cheap, but i was afraid to waste the xyron cartridge by leaving spaces between them :)

@Slicey19: This way we were able to layer the copper card stock and thank you square. The copper is a metallic paper that you can’t really print.

Hey Miss Pineapple…

Your paper cutter looks good. What kind is it? I’m also a graphic designer, and I’ve been looking for an “industrial” type of cutter that isn’t the typical plastic one you find at Michaels! That looks heavy-duty. I’d love to know what type it is! Thanks!

Ours match our invitation suite perfectly because we designed our own invitations! They had a contemporary lovebirds design, so when I designed the thank you’s they have the birds that I designed on the right hand side of the card, and the words “The Lovebirds want to say thanks” and at the bottom our names…I’m excited to actually send them out after the wedding!

Ok, I’m the clueless kid on the block. What does a Xyron do?

I found that it got pricey to buy more Xyron cartridges. I ended up making some like that with my Xyron and then the remainder I used the Scotch photo splits. They held up really well and were much cheaper in the long run. If you’re not doing a ton, I think using the Xyron would be faster though.

These cards are beautiful! I’m with Miss Sea Breeze, what is a Xyron? Was it a lot cheaper to make your own thank you cards than buy the pre-made ones? Your cards look so much nice than the ones I buy, but the super nice thank you cards are pretty expensive. Would it be too rude to ask how much they cost for how many?

@Paulo: It is the Dahle 508, I just got it, but so far so good! The only downside is it is only 6 inches wide

@Miss Sea Breeze: it is pretty much a sticker maker. You can put any paper through and it puts adhesive on the back, then you peel it off like a sticker. there are also lamination and magnet making cartridges. It is amazing.

@babu: My future mother in law collects Michael’s coupons for my from the paper, so I get all my xryon supplies 40% off. They come out like once or twice a month.

@Thank You Notes Girl: It was not a lot cheaper, but it was a little. The only thing I had to buy was the pre-folded cards and that’s because I was lazy :) The copper paper was left over from making my invites, I didn’t need much printer ink because there was little ink coverage on each sheet and the xyron supplies i got 40% off. The project cost about $10 + negligible ink and maybe $3 in Xyron supplies for 50.
