About Mrs. Pinot Noir

Old, New, Borrowed and Blue

September 11th, 2008 @ 1:55 pm by Mrs. Pinot Noir

Like many brides, I will be incorporating something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue into my walk down the aisle. I looked into the history of this famous tradition and this is what I found (courtesy of the Weddingbee Wiki):

Something old - continuity with the bride’s family and the past
Something new - optimism and hope for the bride’s new life ahead
Something borrowed - an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride
Something blue - Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, “Marry in blue, lover be true.”

Something Old
My something old will be my shoes. I searched high and low for a pair of shoes that met my requirements (gold/champagne, low heel, slingback, and under $75). After many hours of shoe shopping, I finally realized that the perfect shoes were in my closet! I had bought them for $15 at Goodwill. They are gold Stuart Weitzmans, and they are the most comfortable dress shoes I have ever owned!

Something New
My something new will be my wedding dress. I was really hoping this could be my something borrowed or my something old, but I guess that’s just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. As I mentioned before, I won’t be posting photos of the dress before the wedding, but it is somewhere in between these two dresses:

[Dress #1, Dress #2]

Something Borrowed
I am very excited about my “something borrowed”! FSIL Pinot generously offered to let me borrow a pair of tear-drop earrings that she inherited from her great-grandmother. Her great-grandmother worked with a jeweler to have them designed exactly to her specifications, and all of the diamonds were hand picked for these pieces. I feel so honored to be able to wear these amazing earrings on my wedding day!

Something Blue
My bouquet will be wrapped in ribbon that matches Mr. PN’s Scottish tartan (and kilt). I was planning on using this as my something blue, until I realized that the tradition is supposed to apply to what you are actually wearing. So I will need to go to Plan B - underwear! Maybe one of these cute options from Fredericks of Hollywood:

Are you including the old, new, borrowed and blue tradition? How will you incorporate each symbol?

love those earrings and the fact your shoes are from goodwill! I am a goodwill-aholic $4 Banana Republic skirt? Yes please.

My old and borrowed are the same items - pearl necklace that was my grandmother’s on her wedding day from my grandfather, and a pearl bracelet that was my other grandmother’s.

My new is my dress, my shoes and my new pearl earrings

My blue is my Under-Bits (for some reason I have started referring to all wedding related undergarments as my “underbits”) and a hand-beaded pearl purse with blue fabric

:-D

cute undies! I meant to wear a pair of my favourite turquoise undies, but they showed through even with crinoline, but I still had the sapphires from my engagement ring for blue.

I was able to incorporate all of them, in a way. My something old was an antique locket that I purchased and had tied to my bouquet. I scanned a photo of my dad’s parents from my parents’ wedding and put them in there. My dad’s parents have both been gone several years and this was a way of having them with me. My something new was my dress (among other new things I was wearing). My something borrowed was a gold ring that belonged to my husband’s step-grandmother’s grandmother (got all that??) that was also tied to my bouquet. Each of the girls in my husband’s extended family has had it with them on their wedding day and I was so honored to be given the chance to carry on the tradition. My something blue was my blue topaz ring that my husband gave me when we had been dating for 6 months.

Old: My mom’s veil
New: Dress
Borrowed: My gransmother’s bracelet
Blue: My garter
I was so glad I was able to wear something of my mom’s. We had to rework it a little to update it but I totally admire my parents marriage and loved wearing something from their wedding.

One of my lovely bridesmaidens is a fabulous embroiderer/seamstress. If I don’t have her make the whole dress (something new!), I’m thinking of at least asking her to embroider Song of Solomon 8:7 on the inside hem.

Ooh, what tartan? My FI is getting married in his Stirling Tartan, a really pretty blue and green weave. We’re so excited to have our men in kilts!
