Mr. Martini’s “Master Plan”

September 12th, 2008 @ 4:35 pm by Mrs. Martini

I mentioned briefly that I was first introduced to Mr. Martini during a happy hour in a previous post. I did not mention, however, that we knew OF each other via our blogs on Xanga. We realized that we had tons of mutual friends, but we had never personally met. When I met him for the first time, I just thought, “oh cool I just met a Xangan!” and I honestly did not think I would ever see him again. Little did I know he was actually interested in me! Not long after, my friend Susan invited me out to a group wine tasting trip in Long Island. I was surprised to discover that Mr. Martini was there, and he was a close friend of Susan as well. We started chatting, and he mentioned that he recently watched the movie Love Actually (my favorite movie!), which kick started the conversation that lasted pretty much all day.

We started out with long, book length emails during the day, and hours of IM chats at night until we finally upgraded to phone conversations. This went on for weeks until he said to me, “I have just discovered the perfect place to take you on our third date!” But at the time, we haven’t even had a first date. What a sneaky way to convince me to go on at least three dates with him! Nevertheless I took the bait, and we have been inseparable since.

Early on in the relationship, I mentioned that it was funny how we met so randomly. What are the chances of seeing each other again so soon, after randomly meeting at that happy hour?

This was when Mr. Martini confessed that he came to the wine tasting trip because he knew I’d be there. Apparently Susan, who knew that he was interested in me, has a little sneaky side too and invited him, knowing he would come to see me. Also, since he was subscribed to my blog, he knew Love Actually was my favorite movie, and purposely watched it the night before so that we would have something to talk about when we met. No wonder! When he was calling out scenes from the movie left and right, I thought it was a little strange that he knew the movie inside and out. I had an excuse for memorizing the movie because I must have watched it about 100 times. But the movie was fresh in HIS mind because he saw it less than 12 hours before.

I wouldn’t consider Mr. Martini to be a very romantic person. In fact, sometimes he is so clueless about romance that my hopeless romantic self wants to hit him over the head with a “how to” book on how to sugar me up. But when he told me his “secret plan” to get my attention, I was it was probably one of the cutest things I have ever heard.

Anyone else meet their future hubby through their blog, or in a not-so-accidental way?

I LOVE “Love Actually”! It’s one of my favorite movies too! Mr. Cookie and my first dance is to “Songbird” which we choose because of the movie.

“Love Actually” is one of the best movies of all time. My best guy friend and I always watch it numerous times during the Christmas season.

My hubby and I actually met through above best guy friend. BF and I have been friends since kindergarden and he was fraternity brothers with my husband in college. The night things finally sparked between us (over a year after meeting for the first time), I had made a trip up to see BF for dinner in his college town (at the time, I was going to college about an hour away and made many trips like this). Originally, my husband wasn’t supposed to be there, but as we were getting ready to leave for dinner, he randomly showed up at BF’s house. After dinner, we all had a great time and my husband and I shared our first kiss before he left late that night. I had originally planned on going back to my college after dinner but ended up staying until the following evening. Four and a half years later, we’re still together and have been married for a little over a year. It wasn’t until just a few months ago that he confessed to me that he knew I would be at BF’s house and he decided to skip out on his original plans so he could come see me. So, we didn’t meet in a not-so-accidental way, but we definitely ended up together in a not-so-accidental way.

In my undergrad days, there were a few casually formed email lists where members would trade links and have random discussions on all manner of topics ranging from light to heavy, and I happened to get roped into one. I knew only a fraction of the people on the list, but I was a pretty active participant. It wasn’t until I’d been on the list for a few years before I met Mr. P at a housewarming of one of the members. At the time, I thought he was old and didn’t give him much thought (the list started when he was a student and continued bringing in new members even after the original members had graduated.) The next time there was a gathering of the group, I was seeing someone, but Mr. P didn’t know it and was already forming a crush. he tried to see if he could casually intercept me on transit on the way home, but he missed me.

It was not until the third time we met at another gathering that he caught my attention. I was at a good point in my life and open to starting a new relationship. We both tried to catch each other leaving in order to maybe get in a one on one conversation, but in the confusion, we missed each other again! And so I waited for an opening from one of his emails to the list to ask him out. I didn’t have to wait long.

Once we started dating, it felt like we already knew so much about each other. We’d been shooting the breeze and debating over email on the list for some seven years even if we didn’t put the whole picture together with the person until we started dating. Turned out one of my favourite in-jokes from the list originated with him. Anyway, it took about a couple of months before we started talking hypothetically about marriage, and soon the hypothetical turned specific and we were engaged in under 3 months.

yup, we met through our blogs too. after narrowly missing each other during three years of college. it makes me giggle when i think how excrutiatingly close we came to running into each other yet we didn’t meet until i moved back home, 2,000 miles away!

my man and i went to JHS and HS together! but really didn’t hang out much in HS and didn’t keep in touch throughout college/post college. then one day i ran into him on the LIRR. very random. then we remained friends (because i wasn’t single) and when i was available, he wanted to hang out with me. his version - he wanted to get me to hook up with me, my version - he wanted to date me. and since i don’t randomly hook up, he had no choice but to date me!

but i think it’s super cute that mr. martini did his homework! reminds me…that AFTER we started dating, i heard from his friends that he would try to catch the train i was on. he never told me that. =)

Mr. Dumpling has come a LONG LONG way over the years. He actually rubs my feet every night, which may not sound romantic, but it makes me so fantastically happy! I met Mr. Dumpling at the radio station where I worked, almost 7 years ago. He told the security guard to let me through the gate because I was his “silly wife” who forgot her stage pass. Who knew 7 years later I really will be his “silly wife!”
