The Stargate Proposal

September 13th, 2008 @ 4:29 pm by Mrs. Avocado

Think about your dream proposal. Do it right now. Does it involve candles or Paris or an expensive romantic dinner? Mr. Avocado and I were eating a nice dinner together one evening, when he leans over and asks me if I would like to know the dream proposal he came up with, but could never do. I was a little nervous that he might actually repeat one of the “dream proposals” I had been thinking of and dash all hopes of having it, but what he had come up with was so much better.

He would take me here, to Cheyenne Mountain, and propose at the top.

Then we would proceed to get the highest level security clearance from the United States Government to go down to the underground facility where they store the Stargate. We would line up the seven chevrons and travel through to visit world after world together.

Sounds wonderful doesn’t it? I am sure it also sounds impossible since the entire proposal is based upon a fictional TV series. We love watching Stargate SG-1 together, and it is definitely one of the things I miss most about being apart. If we were to go into a crowded room and talk about the stargate, odds are that no one would know what we are talking about. So it feels like our little secret, the special thing that we share, one of the many little things that we will share throughout our marriage.

What are some of the little things that you share with your significant other?

Does the Dress Fit

That’s a pretty cool place to ask someones hand in marriage.

We feel the same way, but about Dune. In fact, last night we were talking about how it would be fun to throw a spice party.

K. and I watch Question Time, a UK political show that airs on BBC, together! And we talk and complain and get angry and laugh and… You get the picture! Since we are also apart, I miss the whole mess so much…

Oh my gosh, I never thought I would read about Stargate on Weddingbee. When it was still on, I watched that every Friday with my fiance and his father. Now I watch Stargate Atlantis with my now husband and his father.

mmmmmmmmmmm I love Stargate. My parents told my husband-to-be that he needed to watch all the seasons we owned (ten, plus the first two Atlantis) before he would REALLY be “one of us.”

He did. In a relatively short amount of time. He just had to understand what it was to be in my family. And he fit in incredibly well. :) Now my parents send us copies of Continuum and the Ark of Truth here in California, all the way from Chicago. Stargate just brings people together. :)

That’s amazing! My FI made me start watching all of Stargate when we first started dating. 3 years later, we’re just finishing!

OMG I love Stargate!!! My boyfriend and I watch them on DVDs even though we’ve already watched them. I’m just so sad the show’s over.

I’m sure mine would love if we got shot through a wormhole, to a distant universe, surrounded by strange alien life forms, being hunted by an insane military commander, proposing crichton style on a boat and getting disintegrated.

Hmmm… I’ll admit to watching BSG, but Stargate is something I can’t commit to. How about Firely- did you ever get into that?

OMG this is hilarious!

If my FI saw this he would do a back flip with false hope. I really, really DO NOT like any of those shows and he LOVES them all. I sometimes stay over on a Friday nights and I lose him at about 9 or 10. I’m talking 99% ignored at that point. Eeeeeven though its being recorded downstairs. Whaaaat????

The only sci-fi we watch together is Kyle XY on ABC Family. Now THAT is a show I love!

RE the dream proposal: he told me he looked into the admittedly cheese ballgame proposal (at Yankee Stadium). Though it would’ve been nice, he went the South Beach route because the other “would have made the ring significantly smaller,” as he said.

I’m sorry but a bigger ring instead of a dream proposal…totally worth it! I’ll have that puppy forever now.

I totally lol-ed through this whole post! The future Mr. and I are ridiculous sci-fi nerds– I love Star Wars and he is a closet Trekkie obsessed with Transformers. We also watch subbed anime and call eachother to complain about the plot. Oh! And lest I forget to mention it, we’ve been playing WoW together since before we were dating ;)

About that dream proposal… I think the only thing that possibly could’ve been better than him driving all the way to my house on Christmas morning could’ve been proposing on top of Sinai when we went to Egypt. But there would’ve been drawbacks to that, I suppose (like not being able to call EVERYONE and let them know).

@ Miss Sweet Tea: YESSS!! Firefly!!

omg, i loved SG1! i watched every episode of seasons 1-8 until Macgyver was no longer on the show. i had a huge crush on Daniel Jackson. when i saw the episode ‘window of opportunity” i thought it was sooo funny i must have seen it 20 times before I returned it to netflix.

i have to agree with sweettea, however. firefly is one of the best shows ever if you haven’t watched BSG yet, you will get sucked in within the first 10 minutes of the first episode!

@NiftyBa: Your story made me smile. I can’t wait to get through Stargate and keep going through the rest of the series’.
@Lissy: So you are a fan as well :)
@Miss Sweet Tea: @ladyjane: @Miss Martini: One of our groomsmen loves Firefly and has been trying to get me to watch it forever. I hated the pilot, but now that I am almost through all of the seasons I think it is time to give firefly another chance, especially when it is coming so highly recommended!
@Miss Martini: Window of Opportunity has to be one of the absolute funniest episodes of any show that has ever aired on television. Or how about the episode when everyone switches bodies and Jack and Tilk are in each others bodies? SOOO funny.
