Designing the Ring

September 15th, 2008 @ 2:33 pm by Ms Fondue

You may remember from my last post that Mr. Fondue proposed with my mom’s old engagement ring. It was a tad too big, and I wanted to enhance it a bit to make it more my style.

We decided to take it to a local gemologist, Jay Yontef. We had heard wonderful things about him and his creations, and they were all true! Working with him, we designed a beautiful three-stone ring using my mom’s diamond as the center stone and accented it with rubies.

We had only been engaged for a couple weeks, but I was already so used to wearing the ring on my finger that it was very strange to not have it. After two agonizing weeks, we got a call: the ring was in!

We quickly made an appointment to pick it up. Jay made me close my eyes while he showed it to Mr. Fondue. Then, he placed it carefully under the light and told me to open them. It was gorgeous, and just as I had pictured it!

True to my geeky nature, here’s a keyboard shot of it. The ring sort of looks like yellow gold in this picture, but it’s actually white.

Did you have a hand in designing your engagement ring?

I think it’s so nice that you incorporated your mom’s diamond but made it your own. Beautiful!

love the rubies on the sides! my ring has a center diamond and then a ruby baguet on each side. The red really makes the diamond pop!

I love that you looked for creative ways to show off your wring :) The very first ring shots I took of my little darling were with a Jasmine Pez dispenser. It was the only thing I could find to use to prop her up with!

Love the keyboard shot . I had a very heavy hand in designing my ring. But what my FI got made well surpassed anything I could imagine. ^-^

beautiful! i actually used the diamond from my mom’s engagement ring in mine as well. we picked a beautiful creation by a local jeweler for the setting. it’s so much more meaningful isn’t it?

Love the ring and the inclusion of your mom’s stone.
I had my ring 1 week before I went to get it sized right. (My thoughtful fiance snagged 2 of my rings he knew I had previously worn on my ring finger. Unfortunately, one was significantly larger than the other. Too avoid it being too small - he went with the larger since its always easier to downsize and then there is still the slip the ring on moment even if the size inst perfect. It was huge.) It was gone for 2 hours and my hand felt so naked!!!! I sympathize for 2 weeks!

My center stone was my great grandmother’s and we chose a new setting from Simon G together. I think it’s such a touching way to carry memories on. And my FI got a break on some of the engagement costs- which doesn’t hurt!

Your ring is beautiful! Congratulations!

FI went through several rounds with a designer and a cad program, then 3 wax models.

Once it was perfect, they cast it, set my stones (they actually built the ring design around my center stone) and voila… my beautiful ring.
