Mr. Fondue and I met at his 21st birthday party. I was sort of dating his roommate at the time, so I showed up to the party completely unprepared for meeting the man I was going to marry. However, the minute I laid eyes on Mr. Fondue, I knew.
He didn’t know right away, however. We talked and flirted over the next month before we finally started dating, but Mr. Fondue was so scared of commitment that he wouldn’t call me his girlfriend for the first six months we dated, despite the fact that neither of us was seeing anyone else. This was incredibly frustrating to me, seeing as I was already in love with him.
It took him six months, but he finally came around, realized he was in love with me, and admitted that he was in a serious relationship. I would like to say that we lived happily ever after, but we’ve had a couple rough patches in the past four years, some stemming from his fear of commitment, but everything we have been through has made us an extremely strong couple.
Eventually though, Mr. Fondue warmed up to the idea that we may be getting married someday. In fact, I knew he was getting close to proposing when he started trying to act freaked out again. Think Chandler on “Friends”.
He knew that my mom had an engagement ring waiting for him. It was the ring my dad had first given her, but she had since upgraded, as it didn’t fit on her finger anymore. So while we were visiting my family for Christmas last year, he asked her for the ring. I knew nothing of this before, but with him acting weird and knowing that he had the opportunity to get the ring, I had my suspicions that a proposal was going to be soon. I wanted it to be a surprise, though, so I tried not to think about it too much.
After we were done visiting with my family, we traveled across the state to see his family. It was there, in his parents’ driveway, that he proposed. He later said that he had been planning something a bit more special, but the ring was burning a hole in his pocket and he just couldn’t wait. Everyone now, with a collective, “Awww!”
We went inside to share the news with his family and learned that his brother had also proposed to his girlfriend just days earlier!
Did your fiancé opt for an impromptu proposal?
Wow our relationship path is oddly similar to yours. I look forward to hearing more about u.
Except it took mine the better part of a year to admit to himself and his friends that we were in fact “serious”(neither of us wedre seeing anyone else either)After 4 years everyone was shocked when he finally did propose because they figured he wasn’t the “marrying type”.
My proposal included my fiance tossing a cardboard box at me, saying here’s your birthday present, and running to the kitchen to hide while I opened the box wondering what was going on. haha.
