The Centerpiece Saga

September 15th, 2008 @ 2:10 pm by Mrs. Espresso

We’re less than a month away from the wedding, and we just decided on the centerpieces today. Part of it has to do with the fact that I’m a procrastinator, but I’m also terribly bad at making executive decisions on our wedding decor. I’m a visual person. I would like to see everything set up, and then how it will look with everything else at our wedding. As I’m sure all of you know already, that doesn’t really happen all that much- unless you have a planner who’s done it before and taken pictures. We have no planner. And we’ve never planned a wedding. So my mind has nothing to go off of, except what I see on all the awesome blogs… and then I just like everything. :)

My mother, seeing me fall to procrastination, indecisiveness, choice overload, and the inability to delegate, decided to take some initiative and get me on track again. She wrote down the ideas I was deciding between and then took off out of the house.

One of my ideas from the beginning had been tall glass vases filled with green apples. I hadn’t really thought about them much in the last few months, but this had been my mother’s favorite idea.

The idea I was favoring the most, was having multiple potted herbs line the table.

I wanted the main one to be lavender (eh hem… even though purple is nowhere in our color scheme), and then have two smaller herbs down the table on each side.

This idea was probably #1 on my centerpiece list. I liked the idea that if someone wanted to add more basil to their pasta, then they could just pick some off the pot in front of them. I know our guests would probably never even think of doing that (minus my dad), but I did think it added an additional “cool” factor. :)

Now the idea of repotting, keeping alive, and transporting 75 potted herbs… I didn’t like so much.

And our third idea: something along the lines of mason jars, flowers, and candles

Stay tuned to see what my mom came back with to help, and what centerpiece I chose!

Has it been difficult deciding on your centerpieces? What are you using?!?

I’m partial the apples, because we’re doing something similar. We’re having large glass bowls of floating green or red apples with floating candles. But don’t feel badly on the procrastination front - we’re less than 2 weeks away and just finally decided on this and pulled the trigger and bought all the bowls!

We did rosemary topiaries at our wedding! They were totally low maintenance and our guests took them home to enjoy afterward. They also smelled great. I can see why you like that second picture; it’s very striking.

I changed my mind a lot b/c I was so afraid it would look silly once all assembled. But its turned out looking great. I am very indecisive which is the worst thing to be when planning a wedding.

I love the apple idea…. I also love the herb idea. I would caution that it may be hard to keep the herbs alive, and if they die at the last minute you will not be pleased about having to secure new centerpieces!

I have seen people use apples as placecard holders which is also super cute!

We’re doing a non-traditional option as well - it’s a winter/holiday season wedding so we’re arranging lots of blue and silver ornaments in vases and surronding them with candles.

It took a while for me to decide our centerpieces too. I scoured the internet looking at all kinds of herbs, flowers, etc and was not excited about anything. We also have a small floral budget so I’m like why should I spend what money we do have on something I’m lukewarm about? Finally I saw a picture of white morrocan lanterns with candles on style me pretty and was in love. I found them on the internet wholesale and I’m having our florist scatter petals around them. Then guests can take them home after. I love it and I can’t wait to see it come to life!

Brandi - where did you find the lanterns? That sounds like a really nice idea!

Thank goodness I’m not the only one who can’t make a decision! Whatever you decide will be lovely, I’m sure!!

Jennifer, I found them on home gift supplies wholesale store. You can find it on google. The are a really great price and they have other colors besides white. A word of advice though, you will need LED candles to put in them because they get hot with real candles. Plus if you’re going to put flowers around them it is safer. I hope you like them as much as I do!

I had the same problem for my october wedding! I went from apples in basket to apples in a vase to apples piled on the table - we are now less than a month off and are doing wheat bundled with ribbon and mason jars with tea lights……its been a long road!

I have to say I’m partial to your third choice - mason jars, candles, and flowers

now I’m wondering what happened to the little potted herb I got as a bridal shower favour. The brides mom was the one who spent the time doing the repotting, though thankfully, there are far fewer than 75 guests and a shower!

@Miss Avocado: yay! I’d sit you next to my dad :)
@MsB: I love that idea!!! A winter wonderland wedding sounds fun!
@Brandi: They sound so pretty!! And my name’s Brandi too- and I spell it the same :)
@mrslilja: haha- that sounds like my adventure… and I think you’ll relate to my next post ;)
@Miss Sea Breeze: Fresh apple pie sounds amazing! If I have apple centerpieces… will you come bake warm apples pies?
@Ms Popcorn: If somebody did all the repotting for me- I wouldn’t have thought twice about using them for centerpieces

before the birth of the tea theme, i had wanted herbs too! these are all good ideas and now i really wanna know what you ended up with! and don’t you worry about having to deal with the centerpieces after the wedding, coz if they’re like my guests they’d just take them all home with them!

I had quite a few options I couldn’t decide between for our centerpieces. I knew I wanted color though so we went with glass urns that we filled with either lemons, oranges or limes and touches of lemon leaf. We also mixed in a few bouquets of sunflowers, seeded euc and hypericum. Turned out better than I expected and they were super easy to make.
