On the Record - Mr. Taffy Proposes

September 16th, 2008 @ 12:42 pm by Miss Taffy

I went to Mr. Taffy’s apartment one Friday night in May. I was very hungry, and asked him as soon as I arrived where he wanted to have dinner.

He seemed really busy, and told me that he had to finish washing the dishes before we could go eat. I found it odd that there weren’t any dishes in the sink, and that he was enthusiastically scrubbing a plastic spinach container over and over.

I sat on the couch and listened to the record that Mr. T had put on, waiting for him to finish. Mr. Taffy seemed nervous, and after the song ended, asked me to flip the record over while he “finished the dishes”.

I got up to turn the record over and saw this:

I squealed and jumped at least two feet back! I knew a proposal was coming (more on this later), but I did not expect to see the ring spinning around on the record player! Mr. Taffy came over, picked up the ring and proposed. I think he was happy that I didn’t accidentally pick the record up which would have sent the ring flying across the room!

We went to one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate, although Mr. Taffy had groceries ready (including two kinds of ice cream!) to make dinner in case it had rained.

What surprised you most about your proposal?

Same for me - the total sheer surprise of it! Like you, I was expecting a proposal, but didn’t know when it was going to happen. My fiance took all of my jewellery out of my jewellery box and put my engagement ring in it - when I went to open it, I was blown away!!

Does he do the dishes all the time? I love the visual imagery of him just washing the same dish over and over waiting for the record to end. And I also love that you guys have a record player!

Very original idea. That is awesome. Your reaction must have been priceless. I was also surprised because although I knew a proposal was coming (he already had the ring), I just didn’t know when. He actually surprised himself because he was going to wait one month, but ended up getting down on one knee 2 days after he picked up the ring.

Aww, that’s so cute and unique! My fiance proposed in the water on an excusion to Trunk Bay on St. John. He had it tied inside his swim trunks the whole time we were snorkeling. He warned me not to drop it!

I love your story! And like Miss Avocado said, I laughed imagining him washing the same dish over and over again! For me, my FI surprised me one night when we were on our way to see a band at our favorite hang out. He said we had to swing by my old neighborhood to pick up a friend of his who still lives that way. The route takes us passed a playground where she shared our first kiss back when we were in high school. He pretended to loose something and pulled into the parking lot next to the playground (exact spot of first kiss) and asked me to check the glove box for the missing item. I was too preoccupied trying to find this that I didn’t even pay attention to where we were. In the glove box was only a card. I read the card out loud (as instructed) and when I got to the end, I turned to him and there he was, holding an open ring box. It was the best moment of my life!

@Miss Dumpling: A ring post is coming soon! I thought the ring itself deserved its own entry. ;)

@Miss Avocado: It was pretty funny, especially because it was a plastic container for the recycling bin, and spinach containers don’t tend to get very dirty! :) We have at least 4 or 5 record players between us, and crates and crates of records. I only have one crate, the rest are Mr. Taffy’s.

That is so cute. I think it’s one of my favorite proposal stories ever. It’s so simple, and sweet, and you were totally surprised. That’s awesome. Congrats!

Ooh, what is your favorite restaurant?! I went to U of M (as if the username wasn’t clue enough!) I’m in Boston now, but I miss Ann Arbor!!! (I think my favorite restaurant in A2 would have to be Palio’s or Grizzly Peak…although I waitressed at Cottage Inn all through college!)

@Brandy: The record according to Mr. Taffy is, “a 45 single of Etta James covering Sonny and Cher’s ‘I Got you Babe’ on the Cadet label”. You can find the song on iTunes. :)

It was very cute, because “I got you Babe” played after the proposal, and has the lyric “I’ve got you…to wear my ring”.

Go Blue Bride-
We went to Cafe Zola for dinner. Usually we go there for breakfast, dinner there was great too. Our second date was at the Earle, we love that place. Grizzly Peak… so good!

heh, I once sent a ring flying trying to pick it up without glasses on after showering. I didn’t see where it went and it didn’t turn up until I moved.

what a way to surprise you :) I really like the mental image of it rotating on the turn table.
