Wrapped Around My Finger

September 18th, 2008 @ 10:58 am by Mrs. Meatball

Growing up, and well into my relationship with Mr. Meatball, I always dreamed of a ring like this:

My mother inherited a ring very similar to the one above several years ago. I love it a lot—and thought it would be a meaningful solution to our “can’t spring for bling” on a starving artist’s budget issue. So I politely (read: whiningly) suggested it. She refused. Wouldn’t budge an inch. You see, when my parents got engaged it went something like this:

Dad: So… you wanna get married?
Mom: Yes!
Dad: You want a ring? Or should we use the money for new furniture for the apartment?
Mom: Well, furniture, I guess. That seems more practical.

Yeah… so she regrets that choice now. Later, she inherited the ring from her mother. It seemed that if I were to be married, my husband would buy me the ring she never got from hers. Her diamond was the only one she had, and she was hanging onto it!

I totally get that now. Sorry for the nagging, mom.

So, I’d drag Mr. Meaty into jewelry stores and he’d patiently play an innocent game of “let’s look at rings” together… but it quickly became not so innocent. I’d get attached to rings on the spot and take pictures and then get excited. Then, a few days later, I’d sadly realize I had completely jumped the gun, and what had started out as a game was becoming less innocent and more real for one of us, but not the other.

Or so I thought.

Turns out that while I thought I wanted an antique, he was creating me a brand new ring unlike any other. He worked with a local jeweler named Liza Shtromberg who had a funky, organic design style, to create a style that would reflect our love—unique, organic, and priceless. When he proposed, I was floored. It was absolutely perfect.

(click to enlarge - sorry for the fuzzy photo)

He says that the two circles represent each of us, and the diamond is our love (and/or the child we will one day have). Le sigh. How sweet is that?! I also love that it resembles the sun eclipsing the moon, or a precious gem enclosed in the protection of sturdy constant. It may be hard to see in the picture, but the white gold around it is unpolished. The (ultra-sparkly) diamond is ideal cut, and I love how having it bezel-set allows it to lay flush on my finger and not be a protrusion which I’d surely catch on all my clothes. I love it for being a one-of-a-kind reflection of his love for me, and for being a sweep-me-off-my-feet surprise.

Mr. Meaty really enjoyed working with Liza and would highly recommend her services. Best of all: it didn’t cost an arm and a leg either! Many of the rings we looked at beforehand were much more expensive and much less personal. Broke-ass commandment no. 1: Don’t ever rule something out because it sounds too pricey. You might just be pleasantly surprised!

I’ve finally dabbled over at Polyvore. If you haven’t checked it out and made yourself a collage yet, you’re missing out! It’s so fun and easy, it’s dangerous. Prepare yourselves for more collage fun to come. But for now, I present to you my first collage—some of Liza’s beautiful pieces. You may wish to grab a tissue to absorb your drool.

Do you have a custom-designed engagement ring?  What does it look like?

I do!
My grandmother was a dear, dear part of my life and before she passed away (two years ago) she told me that she wanted me to have her wedding ring. She and my grandfather had an amazing marriage, and so I always felt blessed to be the recepient of such a token of strength and love. She had met my boyfriend (now FI) and approved and we had been together several years at that time. After she passed away, I gave the ring to my now-FI, which i guess signaled my belief in the fact that we were meant to be together and we agreed that it would be reset somehow to symbolize us, but there was NO timeline or guarantee of when that would happen. Fast forward a year… the FI had moved to Arizona for a teaching job and things just seemed all sorts of crazy. He came home for spring break to visit and no sooner were we in the car at the airport than he said “I have a question.” Thinking he wanted to stop at taco bell or something, I nodded affirmatively while I put my seatbelt on. “Will you marry me?” and KABLAMMO my attention was back on him. All of this is to say that he had worked with a jeweler in AZ to create my beautiful, beautiful ring - it incorporates the celtic trinity knot and all 4 of my grandma’s diamonds, and like yours, it sits low, which i love since i’m a klutz and a musician (in that order). Anyway- I love hearing about others’ custom experiences. And now I’ve droned on…so maybe I should get back to work!

I love that i get a double dose of you… Your ring is so original. I love it. mine is not that original but a little different as well - so i’m very into seeing peoples engagement rings - its can be so reflective of one’s personality… one question: What kind of wedding band will you get?

Very awesome! I love it. Mine is square, which may be unique, I don’t know :) Square of mini diamonds with a princess cut sapphire centered “high” above it is the only way I can think of how to describe it.

it was important to us both that we created a ring together - he had proposed (sortof) with a beautiful sappahire that I love but surprise - we were gifted with our mother’s 1st diamonds and so he decided to create a ring with those two stone and another for me. The end result is stunning. I love it.
