Evelyn: Broken :(

September 18th, 2008 @ 3:39 pm by Mrs. Avocado

I just did something really sad. I stuffed my beautiful dress into a tiny little cardboard box and sent it back to the bridal shop in Utah. This turn of events happened when I revealed her to my mom in Washington and she pointed out two major problems.

I wouldn’t want to have to be on my hands and knees searching for missing buttons on my wedding day! The button on the left is connected by only one string.

This was the biggest problem. The bridal shop informed me that this looping is custom made by the designer when the dress is made, and we had been unable to find any cord that would match in our hometown.

Yes, this might seem like an overreaction, but I spent so much money, as I think many other brides can identify with. The most expensive garment I ever own should be flawless straight out of the shop.

When we discovered the problem, I began conversing back and forth with the owner of the shop. This was a really smart move on my part, because now I have everything in writing if there are any problems (I think you can imagine how nervous I am that I am not going to have it back in time for my wedding in 23 days!). I thought my grandma could fix it at first, but things weren’t going well, and the shop owner finally agreed to pay for 2 day shipping both ways and fix the problems at no extra charge.

I really want to like this shop, and I think I still do, but right now everything is hinging on how speedy they return the dress, and how it looks when I pull it back out of the box again.

To keep this post from being a big bummer, I leave you with a little trivia. Who can name the character, TV show, episode, and missing prop from the reenactment below? Double points if you can quote her exactly. And tell me why she has the dress on. And a special high five from me if you can do it all without watching the quote below.

Scrub to about 1:10 if you need a little refresher (or just watch the whole 4 minutes, it’s one of my favorite episodes!)

How did you handle your vendor snafus?

Good luck with your dress! I definitely understand wanting it to be perfect. :D

And I am such a “Friends” junkie. I knew it was a reenactment of Monica in Emily’s dress from glancing at the photo for like a second. I probably couldn’t quote her exactly, but I bet Mr. Fondue could. He can quote anything after just seeing it once, and we’ve probably seen it at least 75 times.

I love the fun end.
As for the dress - yes you were right to send it back and have them fix it at no extra cost. That being said - if it comes back and you find other small things and its too close to the wedding to do anything about it - just let it go. Tuck it into your mind somewhere that really, no one else will ever notice and on that day, you won’t care. I hope she comes back prefect for you!

Good luck on your dress. Hope everything comes out good.

The clip below is from Friends. Monica wears Emily’s wedding gown she picked up from the store. I don’t know the quote though. We watch friends reruns every night during dinner. Channel 2!

character: Monica
TV show: Friends
Episode: The one with all the wedding dresses
Missing prop: Yellow rubber gloves
quote her exactly: “Thank you for coming!”
why she has the dress on: It’s Emily’s wedding dress that she picked up for Ross (since Emily ordered it in the US but she was in the UK, and Ross can’t pick it up because he can’t see the dress before the wedding… while at the shop she tried it on and wouldn’t leave the store and even borrowed the saleslady’s ring… so she brings it home and tries it on again… Phoebe comes to the door wearing a dress from a store called “It’s not too late”… Rachel puts one on after she realizes she’s scared Joshua away with wedding talk… answers the door with “I Dooooo” when she thinks it’s Chandler but it’s actually Joshua again.)

I am a Friends FREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

as sweet and candid and honest (your teeth falling out, your buttons popping off, not having your ring/proposal til after you started planning…)as you are I must say that you comfort me so much when i read your posts because it makes me know that planning your own wedding isn’t a cake walk for everyone else. I thought I was alone in my wedding planning woes… thanks Miss Avo!

The reenactment is from Friends. I’d recognize those purple walls anywhere. It is from the episode “The one with all the dresses” Monica ends up wearing the wedding dress while doing dishes. the line is something like “thank you so much for coming!” and the missing prop are the yellow rubber gloves!

Gotta love Friends!

Hope your dress comes back more perfect than you could imagine!

@Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride: You are right. It is probably never going to be perfect. I will accept the flaws, as long as they fix this mistake :)
@Michelle: Oh the stories I (we all) could tell :) You are never alone in the stress my friend.
