About Mrs. Meatball

Feelin’ the Chennergy

September 19th, 2008 @ 3:29 pm by Mrs. Meatball

Even before we were officially engaged, I liked to torture myself by spending hours looking at the galleries on wedding photography websites. We both knew from the start that photography is possibly the most important element (after the love, of course!). Every bride I know says the day is such a blur that the photos are the only way to remember certain details. I quickly learned that there are really two types of photographers worth considering. The kind that are reasonably (though not easily) affordable and take ‘pretty’ pictures. You look at them objectively and say, “aw, how nice” and quickly flip to the next one. And then there are the kind who are able to communicate the energy, emotion and drama of each moment. They make the viewer feel close to the people in the photo, even though they’re complete strangers. Their photographs rivet you, and make you emotional, just looking at them. That’s exactly what we wanted, but I knew we’d never be able to afford a photographer like that; not on our budget.

Then, I saw a post on A $10,000 Wedding about a photographer who offers 3 pro bono wedding packages each year to needy/deserving brides for their weddings. Rather than being a competition-style offer, it’s simply an incredibly generous outreach to support couples who cannot otherwise afford remarkable, high-end photography. I looked at the Chennergy website and I honestly could barely breathe. His pictures were so vivid, so moving, so beautifully composed and emotional… I had never seen anything like it. For a couple days, it was all I could think about. I decided I had to write in and see what happened, or I’d always wonder ‘what if…’

I sat down at the computer and out it poured. The story of us as a couple, the wedding we dream of, and all the personal, complicated reasons which prevent us from affording the kind of photography about which we dream. I hit send with butterflies in my stomach, and tried to put it out of my mind.

Two days later, I woke up to an email from Dan at Chennergy. We had been selected! I thought I was dreaming, but it was real. I still get choked up remembering the feeling. He receives multiple submissions every day, but he chose us. We have our photographer, and I luuuuurve him.

We are incredibly fortunate. I hope he knows what an amazing impact he is making in our world - to be so selflessly spreading love and goodness, warmth and generosity around. An artist who not only inspires with his work, but also his attitude. His approach is so genuine and rare, and we are truly blessed to have him be a part of our wedding. Stunning photos and good juju - what more could we want?

I encourage my fellow brides (or anyone, for that matter) out there - never give up. Don’t listen to that voice inside that says “It will never work” or “I’ll never win” because sometimes the stars align, and everything is possible.

Take a look at some of his work… my meager words simply cannot do it justice.

(and thank you, tto, for posting about this on your blog. I’d have never found it without you.)

Your pictures are just going to blow everyone away (myself included). I love Chennergy’s work and am a frequent blog stalker of theirs. If it wasn’t too personal, I think the hive would love to read the submission you wrote!

Photography is the most important vendor, but it’s hard because there are SO many photographers out there! I met with like ten before I found one for my wedding, and I wasn’t even thrilled with them!

I have to say I am happy for you and your fiance and your good fortune in getting your photography done for free. I also have to say thought that the tone you described the “reasonably” priced photographers with sort of offended me. Most of us cannot afford or do not want such artistic pictures and describing other types of pictures as “pretty” but easy to “quickly flip” through was just not very inclusive. I am happy you ended up getting what you wanted but please do not discount the “pretty” pictures. We all want beautiful pictures that capture or beautiful memories. You really made it seem like if we don’t end up with stunning pictures worthy of a magazine that we’re left with not much at all. So, please do celebrate your photographer but please do not put down those people who either do not want or cannot afford this type of photographer.

Obviously, if he picked you out of many, the photographer thought you were deserving. So it’s luck and so much more - because you wrote from your heart! Congrats and thanks for the encouraging words! I appreciate it.

@Anna: Check out the chennergy website under RENTweddings. They offer 3 per year, and I believe 2009 is filled. Good luck!
@ Avocado: Maybe I will… let me think about it :)
@Jessica: I’m truly sorry if you were offended by my phrasing. I didn’t mean at all to insinuate that pretty pictures aren’t worth anything, or that everyone should aspire to the style of photography that I most admire. Its simply a matter of personal taste. I don’t expect everyone to agree with my choices, and I’m sorry if you took it the wrong way. I’m sure your photos will be beautiful too, and as long as you’re happy with them, then I’m happy!

I can tell you that Chennergy isn’t the only photographer that offers pro-bono weddings, I happened to be luck enough to find a photographer (CM-Photographics) in my area that does the same - and we won! Our wedding pictures turned out beautifully, we were incredibly lucky! Keep your eyes open, get yourself on mailing lists, you never know what you’ll find. (Our photographer also offered one 50% off wedding as part of the same contest - also an incredible price!) Good luck!

I was Dan’s first photo professor in college and used him frequently as my second shooter, now we trade 2 nd shooting for each other. You couldn’t be in better hands, Dan is really an exceptional person and an amazing photographer. When you teach some times it can be hard when your students don’t seem engaged but every once and a while you get a dan Chen and you remember why you teach, he may have the best natural eye for photos of any student I’ve ever had.
