Dreaming in Color

September 19th, 2008 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Meatball

Deciding on a color scheme is difficult. We know roughly what we want, but we keep jumping between specifics… this shade of blue versus that shade of blue. Y’know… typical wedding indecisiveness.

Our venue has a quasi-Moroccan feel to it, with a lot of burgundy, gold, beige, and tan in the venue already. I want to punch up the color a bit, and have long been in love with a “many colors” concept rather than just two or three theme colors (thanks to Miss Cream Puff). So, right away, I knew I’d like to have my four ’maids in four different but complementary colors, like so (except different colors):

We haven’t sorted out whether we want them all in the same dress or not yet—but that’s for a later post.

So, after much debate, we came up with these colors for our scheme:

(Sorry for the very un-fancy display here. One day, I’ll get wise and make an inspiration board!)

It’s not perfect yet, but it’s a start. I’d like to have each lady in one of the above colors. Am I crazy? It feels slightly exotic, but in a good, not too theme-y way. Plus, who doesn’t look good in jewel tones? I hope my ladies are pleased…

Are you planning on bucking tradition and having your ‘maids wear different dresses, or a multitude of colors?

I’ve asked mine to wear different colors. Two are wearing suits, so I asked them to get colored shirts.

I love the color choice. It definitely has an exotic feel.

I have 3 women standing up with me and we’re planning different colors for each. Similar to yours actually! Cinnamon brown, deep jewel-tone purple, and chocolate brown. They will be wearing different style dresses as well, though I’ve asked them all to wear just-below the knee length to tea-length.

I love the way the colors look together and each of my attendants is pleased with her color, which I think is a huge plus.

I love unique color schemes and this is definitely one of those. I think the new trends to have bridesmaids wear the same dress in jewel tones, or any dress in jewel tones is great!

It’s an interesting idea. I don’t think the purple goes with the rest though. Maybe a light, not too vivid orange instead?

My MOH cousin is going to rock a dark orange and the other two ladies will wear a green shade. I really wanted everyone to know that my cousin was a special lady!

@Katya: You read my mind! That’s just what I was thinking after looking back at this :)
@Jackie: You’re cute. She certainly sounds special!
@Beans: Thanks! How gorgeous - and very sweet of you to pass it on. I love it!

I love color as much - if not rediculously more than - the next girl. I collect Fiestaware and colorful vintage hats… So, I definitely agree that sometimes less is not necessarily more.
But I do think it requires a certain balance. How many bridesmaids do you have? As I’m looking at the top image and I cover up one dress at a time, going down the line, each combination of 4 is lacking. But the image with all 5 dresses is stunning on its own.

(I should give credit where credit is due: I didn’t notice this until my boyfriend said “it depends, because there is a BIG difference between 4 and 5.”)

I’m going with many colors (fuschia, burnt orange, clementine/persimmon) for the bridesmaid dresses. I’ve asked the girls for dress style suggestions but they don’t seem to want to throw out ideas, so I think I’ll end up making an executive decision and choosing one style for all of them and having it custom made (my gift to them). This is the style I’m thinking of:
