Blogging on the Down-low

or The Tea Kettle, Part 2: Electric Bluegaloo!

As I do not have photo software on my new laptop, Mr. Hum is currently resizing our wedding pics for me on his, but I figured while I wait, I would share with you ladies a little story about the power of the blog.

When I first started writing on the ’Bee, I didn’t tell very many people. This was partially because I wanted to keep certain things a surprise for our guests at large, but partially because I am shy about sharing my writing.

Anyway, as part of our wedding program trivia*, I finally outed myself as a blogger for the site and a new group of Weddingbee fans emerged, led by my brand new mother in law. After we returned from the honeymoon, she called me and told me she’d read through almost my entire backlog of entries. She also posed a very serious question - Did I ever get Bluey, the elusive Le Creuset tea kettle? When I admitted no, the kettle remained at large, she was shocked and dismayed.

“Really?” she gasped. “But you so need to have it!”

While we had a bit of a laugh about this, I didn’t think much of it until yesterday when she came to visit for the first time since the wedding for a bit of a catch up/belated birthday brunch (my birthday was back on the 3rd). And what should I find tucked in with my awesome new DVDs? An envelope marked Whistling Kettle, containing the exact amount required to purchase my lovely Bluey!

I was incredibly touched, not only because it was very thoughtful (tea is one of my few indulgences), but because it related back to my blog which made me feel really good about sharing that aspect of my life.

To all you blogging ladies out there, I’ve got to know - do your family and friends know you blog or do you do it on the down-low?

Its a toss-up for me. Certain people in my life have been invited to read, but I’m trying to keep it quiet for the same reasons as you, Mrs. Hum! I feel like people keep discovering it though… the interwebs is a small world :)

I’m so glad you got Bluey! What a thoughtful mother in law you have.

Hooray for Bluey and the return of Mrs. Hum! That’s such a great gift, and a nice surprise to get 2+ months after the wedding.

At first the blogging was a total secret, mostly because I didn’t want my mom to find out (she thinks I’m altogether too obsessed with wedding details). But when my MAID OF HONOR accidentally spilled the beans to my mom, who has decided to turn a blind eye, I decided to loosen up a little bit. Most of my friends/family don’t regularly read blogs, anyway, although my one-and-only first cousin somehow discovered me through this vast series of tubes. Mr.GV thinks it’s funny and more than a bit ridiculous. Whatever! I’m having fun! :-D

I do have a link to weddingbee from our wedding webpage, at the request of Mr. HC, who is strangely proud of my blogging. But otherwise I don’t talk about it to anyone other than my close friends. That’s so great that your MIL is your new biggest fan!

The majority of my friends and family know that I blog (my grandmother and mom are both regular readers of my personal blog), but I’m not sure how many people know that I blog here. I haven’t kept it a secret, however, but I did warn my bridesmaids not to read any posts made here that I specifically labeled them not to, haha. That said, I think most of them stick to reading my regular blog.

Your MIL is super super sweet!

I’ve always wondered about this for the Bees too….sometimes I think about what I would do if I were a bee and I know I would just be so embarrassed to share that I write for Weddingbee with people I know! I thought I was weird for thinking that!

yes! i totally got most of those questions. high four-and a half!

i generally keep my blog on the hush hush from family… i like keeping them on their toes, especially since they think that the wedding will consist only of “freaks” and needles. we think this is hilarious.

You know, a Le Creuset teakettle was the only thing not purchased on OUR Macy’s registry. Why, oh why, does no one understand the power of the teakettle?!?! (Thank heavens for your happy postscript!)
