About Mrs. Shortcake

For Better

September 22nd, 2008 @ 5:23 pm by Mrs. Shortcake

Many of my afternoons as a teenager were spent squirreled away in the corner of my high school’s library. My father, who taught at the school, often had PM A.P. courses to teach, and because I was ride-less, I had to come up with after school diversions. So, when I wasn’t singing in the choir/captaining rugby/making strange machines for the Physics Olympics/volunteering it up, I would head for the library and curl up between the stacks with a stack of Lynn Johnson collections. I followed For Better or For Worse devotedly until a couple of years ago, and returned in time to read her farewell post. Luckily, and unexpectedly, Johnson is not only rerunning the 29 year-old comics—but redrawing and redoing many of the story lines!

Here are some of my favourites from Elizabeth’s wedding to her childhood sweetheart, Anthony (click to enlarge):

Johnson has all of the strips since 2003 up on her site—and make sure to subscribe to her daily FBOFW strip on your blog reader!

Oooh, I love For Better or Worse. I felt sad when the strip “ended,” but it will be interesting to read the whole thing from the beginning.

One of my fondest memories is when I was younger, my mom and I would read the Sunday comics together after church every week. “For Better or For Worse” was always a favorite of mine, probably because Elizabeth was around my age. It was very bittersweet to see the storyline come to an end, but it has been enjoyable to read it from the beginning!

the funny thing is that that michael, elizabeth and april are all around me and my sisters’ ages. i thought that was cool. i was definitely sad to see it end but am excited to read what happened before i learned how to read. lol. i must say, you’ve got a good thing going when people feel emotionally connected to your characters…i was hurt when farley died AND angry when paul cheated on elizabeth.

Blast from the Past! I remember those comic strips. I used to fight my little brother for the Sunday “funnies” section of the newspaper! Thanks Shortcake!

It’s really like a little soap opera, I was so happy when Anthony and Elizabeth finally got together! I especially loved having the whole wedding series right around the time that we were gearing up for ours, it was just a nice parallel to have and some of the strips during the planning process definitely had familiar situatinos to me! :)

I was so sad when it “ended.” I remember when April was born and when their dog died and when Michael graduated….I just loved how it moved on with time. FBOFW and Calvin and Hobbes were my faves growing up.
