DIY Moss Balls

September 23rd, 2008 @ 2:56 pm by Mrs. Lemonade

Remember the moss balls? After sitting on my hard drive (and floating through my dreams) for months, I decided I still loved them and had to have them at our reception. Since I’ve been crafting up a storm making so much other stuff for the wedding, I figured I’d try my hand at these bad boys. They are sooo simple!

We plan on hanging a variety of 7, 9, and 11 inch balls mixed in with the lanterns. You’ll need a Styrofoam ball in your preferred size (try to get a green one, I ended up with white ones since I was lazy and didn’t want to make multiple trips), some moss, spray glue, 12 inch pieces of floral wire, ribbon (if so desired), and monofilament. I would also recommend a VERY well ventilated workspace and a little mask if you don’t want to end up a bit queasy from the intense glue fumes.

First, take a piece of wire and shove it through the ball.

Form each end of the wire into a loop:

Next, get your moss ready. You can apply it as is, out of the bag, or you can do as I did and make more work for yourself. I decided the moss looked a bit weird and unnatural right out of the bag. So, I cut it up into little pieces first.

Now, bust out the spray glue (and preferably your mask) and spray a section of the ball. Roll the ball in the moss to coat.

Pat a bit to get the loose pieces to fall off and repeat a few times to cover the ball completely.

I let ours sit overnight to ensure everything bonded well. From here, all you need to do is decide whether you want a ribbon or monofiliment hanger. I’m still not sure, but I’m leaning towards the monofilament, as it’s virtually invisible:

please ignore the lovely garage mess

One down, 39 left to go…

Have you considered sprucing up the ceiling space of your venue?  What are you using to do so?

That is pretty impressive! A question though: does the moss dry out?

This is a beautiful project, and I had a similar one in mind for my reception. However, it is not necessarily a project for budget brides if you want a larger quantity of them. Styrofoam balls are stupid expensive — upwards of $15 each for a 10″, from what I’ve seen. Plus add in all of your other materials. I don’t understand why; it’s just foam and air. But it is a beautiful project, so if you have the budget, go for it. Otherwise perhaps use a few for accent and go with paper lanterns for the rest.

You did a great job. If you do a moss ball every few days you’ll be set :)
