Mrs. Champagne's Picture
Miss Champagne, DC/Vail/Colorado Age and Occupation: 26, Eye Doctor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Attorney Engagement Date: March 13, 2006 Wedding Date: February 2009 Blogging Since: July 30, 2008 Venue: Small church ceremony with mountain-view log cabin reception About Me: I'm a small town mountain girl with a city heart. About Mrs. Champagne

It’s no secret that Vail is cold in the winter. It’s also no secret that it’ll most likely snow in February. So for the last few months, I’ve been on the search to find the perfect cover-up for a cold night. I want to keep the elegant look without going too overboard, but I still really want to use some sort of jacket. Originally, I thought that I would use my grandmother’s stole (as my something old), but there is a small dilemma—I have a stole from each grandmother; one is dark brown and the other is a chestnut color. Both have their name embroidered inside the jacket, and it would be really special if I could carry a piece of their legacy with me.

Grandmother Susie’s fur… a chestnut classic fit:

Grandmother Hazel’s fur… much darker with extended bodice. At first I thought the brown would be too dark, but it could bring out the dark tone in my champagne color dress.

So in addition to these two choices, I looked around for some other cover-up faux fur choices.

Just for kicks, I tried a white stole at the bridal shop while I had my dress on.

I didn’t really like it, but I guess it allowed me to picture the dress with a fur… Please excuse the very large paper clips on my bum

I’ve always loved the bolero style, and it can be beautiful with a fitted dress. The only problem I have with boleros is that I’ll need more warmth!

This is actually a “champagne” colored faux fur… could go well with my dress, but I would want to find a pretty jewel to fasten it together… eh, I don’t know.

For some “real bride” inspiration, a fellow long-time Vail girl was married last December and had a beautiful fur, and the color is similar to Grandma Susie’s stole.

I thought Grandmother Hazel’s fur was going to be too dark, but then I saw these beautiful pictures!

So now I’m waiting for my dress to arrive so I can either choose Susie, Hazel, or something else. I would love for this to be my something old!

What was your something old, and how did you pay tribute to the owner?

I like the dark fur for a nice contrast! Plus, it will go great with your hair. :)

Oh how I love fur.

I think which one you wear depends on where they hit on your body and with your dress. Either color would look great. I like color much more than white.

I agree with AliCherri1–was going to suggest wearing both. Maybe one before the ceremony and one after? That would honor both grandmothers!

My something old was my late mother’s wedding and “mother” rings (with us kids’ birthstones) tied to my bouquet, and my something borrowed was a small offwhite bible (also tied to the bouquet) that has been used in weddings on my husband’s side since his mom got married. :-D

Either would really work–and they do provide a lovely contrast to the dress–it’s unexpected, and totally glamorus in a casual, effortless way. Wear both of them! Switch it up! And now I’m totally envious that it won’t be cold enough to justify pulling out my vintage furs out for my upcoming wedding and honeymoon. :-)

And you could totally rock a modified, happy Margot Tennenbaum look if you wanted.

Love love the furs! I am in a similar boat, just trying to decide on ivory or black! Your grandmother’s coats are beautiful! I wish my grandmother had one I could wear.

Oh the dark one no doubt will look stunning with your hair and dress! What a very nice idea for your something old, we should all be as fortunate to have these both at our disposal!!!! Love them equally, but the dark will be so elegant

I love the idea of faux fur. Either choice would be glamorous. Our wedding is in the winter and I’m wearing a black cape. My fiance jokingly keeps calling me the “Super Hero Bride” but admitted he loves the look. Just something to think about.

Wait, I thought that when I clicked to read more I was going to see your stoles with your dress..?
It’s a lovely sentiment, it’s bound to be a hit with either one.

@Shawn: I wish I had the stoles when I tried on my dress… I was only able to try on the boring white one that the store had. BUT, when my dress comes in, I’ll def post a pic with both!!

I agree with the others - wear both! I love these and wanted a winter wedding so I could wear my great grandmothers full length mink. However, my honey hates cold. Maybe we’ll get a freak Southern California snow storm next July…a girl can always dream, right? ;)

I really like whatgoodvoile: came up with. BRILLIANT idea!

My something hit my (much older) sister/MOH almost from no where. She has 2 teen sons and well before they came along I knew she treated me like a daughter. I’ve long considered her to be my second mother and when she didn’t get blessed with a daughter, I was blessed to stay like the daughter she never had.

We were talking about veils and it hit her that I could use her veil. We both got excited because that could be my something old and she would love me to use it and…well needless to say we cried. I’ll be wearing it almost exactly 20 years after she wore it. I tried it on just today and…we cried again!

Sad part is she’s been a widow just about 5 years and I can’t believe Danny won’t be there.
