The Great Venue Search, Part 2

September 25th, 2008 @ 12:50 pm by Ms Fondue

Previously: Part 1

Still not discouraged, we continued on with the venue search. Our next stop was Cheekwood Botanical Gardens. We were fairly certain a reception here would be out of budget, but we were willing to compromise and have the reception elsewhere to be able to wed in one of their beautiful gardens.

The specific location we had in mind was the reflection pool. However, in the month of May, they do not allow wedding ceremonies there unless you hold the reception at Cheekwood as well. We looked at their lowest price reception option for our number of guests, but it would have had to been a standing reception, which is something we really didn’t want. There were other gardens that didn’t have the same restriction, but we didn’t like them as well. The search went on.

The Hermitage, the historic home of President Andrew Jackson, looked promising.

It had a bunch of different locations to choose from for all budgets and party sizes. The location we liked best, the Tulip Grove Mansion, wouldn’t allow a sit-down dinner or buffet for our number of guests. We’d need to rent a tent, and that was out of our budget. The other sites were nice, but we still wanted to look around.

Did you encounter a lot of venues that seemed they would be within your budget until you got into the details?

Yes, I encountered a venue just yesterday that I was excited about. The space was interesting, they included chairs and tables in your fental fee too! But as I was about to send in the information request, I saw that their caterer had a minimum that there is no way we would hit. I wish venues would be more upfront about stuff like that.

One of our favorite venues had a tent set up on the back of the house that they said they offered at half price…which was $1600! I was like well we won’t rent the tent. The coord said that we’d have to pay them to take it down since “all the brides that time of year get the tent” so they just left it up all the time. I was like you should just include that in the cost of the rental if oyu’re going to force people to do it!

Oh my gosh…we wanted a vineyard wedding, and found a gorgeous French chateau vineyard less than 10 miles from our home. It was supposed to be $3800 for a Saturday wedding, until you added in the tables, chairs, cocktail tables, catering tables (you get the idea…) that weren’t included in the price! Plus, if you wanted to use the Bridal Suite, there was a $300 extra charge. What else would I do, get dressed in the public restroom? All in all, it would have cost half of our entire wedding budget just to book the venue. Yuck! I think I need to open my own wedding venue…. :)

One word: rentals. The venue we ended up choosing included tables and chairs, but no linens, silverware, or plates — which meant we needed to find another $10 per person in our budget if we wanted to have it there! We loved the location and rearranged our budget to make it work, but the initial sticker shock was a bit traumatic!
