The Time of Our Lives: Free Fireworks!

September 25th, 2008 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Tiramisu

We left off with the sky darkening, the guests running for cover in the house and in the tent, and two newlyweds beginning to wonder if their reception was going to be ruined. Here’s what happened next…

A little proof that if it’s true that rain on your wedding day is good luck, then clearly we are due for a whole lot of it:

The rain was one thing, but it was the wind that really did us in. It turns out that having a big guest list is a good thing when you end up needing them all to hold your tent up:

The woman in the black tank top is our fabulous day-of coordinator. Unfortunately, I think she might be crying in this photo.

How good-spirited were our guests?!:

This blur of white off in the distance is one of the cocktail table umbrellas taking flight:

Meeting new friends while holding up metal poles in a lightning storm—it was an excellent ice breaker:

Still smiling:

Bonus of a mid-cocktail hour storm? Short line at the bar! Please note our now-soaked photographer in the background of this shot:

This was not really the cocktail hour scene that I dreamed of:

The thunder, lightning, and rain slowed down a bit… but now what’s that pelting sound on the roof of the tent? Oh, that would be hail:

Can you see it bouncing? It was the secret ingredient in the blueberry martinis.

Unplanned reception decor: swimming pool inside the tent.

Thankfully it dried up fast and was remedied by the now-essential flip flop favors:

The lights flickered, then went out, but thankfully the worst of the storm was now over and what followed was the most beautiful and most welcome sunshine ever:

Where was I the whole time? Right there under the tent, and in a state of shock, mostly. Sam, our photographer, had this to say on her blog about the events, which made me cry when I first read it:

“The band was silenced by a several hour long power outages, a river rushed through the tent, and the only light to be found came from the flicker of candlelight beneath the tent and the bright bursts of lighting all around it. She could have cried, she should have snapped, but Emily just laughed and loved. “I just married Liam and everyone in the world who is important to me is right here,” she offered as explanation for her ease. And it was there and then, with hail in my hair and my drenched pants plastered to my legs that I knew Emily and Liam would live happily ever after, able to weather any storm no matter how strong or scary.”

There’s just one other thing that a bride with no power needs, and that would be a martini:

Next time: more delicious sunshine, a rainbow, and our amazing band makes the most of things.

Love your attitude through all this. What a production!

My cousin and his wife had a huge thunderstorm during their outdoor reception a few years ago, and their venue had one of their staff running an “umbrella shuttle” to get people from the tent to the indoor bathrooms without getting wet.

I can’t remember if you had the LED throwies in your lanterns or not…if so, did that help provide light during the outage?

Good for you for keeping such a positive attitude. I would have had a meltdown!!

THis post was just what I needed after reading that there is an 80% chance of rain on my wedding day! My plan is to find last minute flip flop favors and then have fun all night long. I only hope our photographer will see the same kind of love that your’s saw in you and your husband! Cheers!

When I first started reading I thought, “what horror!”

Maybe I’m sick but in looking at the pictures and reading your words, I chuckled. Not in a haha, funny way. In a warm and fuzzy kind of way.

It felt like I was there because your words were so descriptive. The team work between strangers. The laughter of some, which may have come from either nerves or maybe a sense of “let’s make the best of it.”

I applaud your strength that day. I have no idea what I would have done but you just taught me that I must remember that whatever happens it could be worse and Mrs. T handled her hot mess with complete and utter class.

Way to put things in perspective. You rock girl!

Thank you so much for this post! Truthfully, some of the most memorable weddings I’ve been to have not be the most “perfect”. And I think that totally helped me to deal with the down pour, thunderstorm, and tornado watches for our wedding site the day of our wedding. And I must admit that one of my favorite memories of our wedding day was putting on the flip flops I’d thankfully gotten for myself, hiking up my wedding dress, holding my new husband’s hand and making a mad dash to the get away car in the middle of the downpour! You have illustrated huge truth for us! Perfection is all about attitude!

Oh my goodness!
It poured like that at my cousin’s outdoor wedding. In her case, the rain held off until just after the ceremony, right until everyone was under the tent — and then it began torrentially. When people hear these stories it sounds like a nightmare, but really, everyone you love it all together, still having a good time, and that’s all that matters in the end.

We are sister brides! We too had some weather! We had to rush through our ceremony and run to the party barn for the reception. DH and I were under trees, so we didn’t get so wet, but I knew we had to cut things short when I felt spray whipping my face and saw our guests under umbrellas, jackets, and ceremony fans to keep the water off! Many guests got pretty wet, and later it was “raining sideways” out the windows during the reception. But you know what? Everyone keeps saying how memorable it was and how they won’t forget it (the thunder, the cows mooing, the rain, the lightning . . . couldn’t really hear much of the ceremony but we had nature’s chorus!), and not a one complained. Such sweethearts. :-D (Only permanent bad thing was the red dye from the fans bleeding on some people’s clothes. :-P)

You handled it beautifully, and I know what you mean–the love and the friends and family are most important. As we had engraved on our ring bowl (prophetic, eh? ;-)): “Who cares about the clouds when we’re together?”

Well done, Mrs. T–and you are beautiful!

Soon to be Mrs. H

Hi Mrs. T, I have been looking for wedding sites in York and the first picture I saw of your wedding it was exactly what I was looking for. I was hoping your would tell me where your wedding was located. You have such an amazing story and I hope I can be as relaxed as you.

You are a true wedding hero of mine. Your description was so vivide, and could have easily sounded depressed and saddened because your perfect dream wedding didn’t happen… or did it? :)

Been a way for a few days but this scene is very similar to one of my BM’s weddings. And it was one of the best weddings I have ever been too. Once everyone is wet and muddy there is no pretense or uneasyness about meeting new people and they just kind of let thier hair down! We had a great time and there are fun pictures of our muddy feet thrown in.
